Listen People this was in the Camp Compost in the Virgin Islands... It was Chirping/growling long before i picked it up but yes we were young and experimenting with its behavior.
That is NOT growling, hermit crabs chirp! The conclusion I have is, it was not happy to have you holding it and you should have left the poor thing alone!
i can tell if its a cold day because of the dead leaves and dried dirt. that pretty much only happens during fall or the beggining of winter or something
that hemit crab is not cussing, growling, or trying to stand its ground. by the way the ground on the video looks like: dead leaves, dried dirt, outside ambience noises. Your outside with that crab and he is not happy because it is a cold day. they will only chirp/noise if they are cold. What are you trying to do, FREEZE it to death!

thats a large wild crab, the fact that they were warning you that thwey would attack is when you should gently put them down, young crabs can leave blisters, a crab at that age could break skin. it is rare for them to attack but it is polite of them to warn you to leave them alone :D

They can sometimes even die from excessive stress. Especially when we're talking about a crab who lives in the wild, and not a pet crab who is pretty much used to being picked up (I don't know any hermie owners who shake their crabbies like that, though :/). Those are voices or great distress.
