Saw the Jarmels in Virginia Saturday, as part of huge multi-group review. It wasn't the same with the different lead, but still a good performance. The show itself, by the way, was fantastic (Flamingos, Jive Five, Shirley Alston, Vogues, Tokens, etc., etc.).
Taking a classic standard such as this one by Jerome Kern and re-arainging it uptemp incurs a heavy risk. The Jarmels took a chance and won. I love their version!!!
No doubt about it, Paul Burnett was pure talent. And, don't forget the rest of the Jarmels. Paul, and the rest of the guys are as cool as a cucumber. I'm going to try, and do a 24/7, and play this song.
Love the song itself --listened to way to many versions over the years..I always listen with a open mind and a hopeful heart but no one-solo or group has ever even came close to the Jarmel's..And Yes,Paul is very definitely Cool
Gill, Right on point! Paul was the CHAMPION! He, along with our New York crew (Gene Pitt and the Jive5, Willie Winfield, and of course The Great Cleveland Stills are amongst my all time favs. TY for this video. Is there a way I can puchase any of these great performances? Oh and BTW, NO version of this song (yes Frank Sinatra included) can TOUCH The Jarmels!
@gilltorres The Lettermen also did a fantastic version and released it the same year & charted #13. I don't believe the Jarmels even charted with this side because the flip " A Little Bit Of Soap" was the hit. gilltorres I would reconsider your statement.
@dowopper51 In this instance charting isn't relevant. What he's obviously saying that the Jarmels DEFINED the song, whether it was buried on a B side or not. (Back in those days when we didn't own a lot of records, we always wound up listening to both sides!) Who would ever want to hear the Lettermen after hearing this?
Another song to cherish and still so good sounding after all these years. It's always a treat to hear this music brought by heavenly voices. Also, don't forget about the great version by The Jaguars, from 1956...
Pul and the the great bass passed on close to each other and that was it for this great vocal group. We were fortunate that we saw them when we did.Bunch of times at UGHA and once at Radio Caity Music Hall. Thanks again Gil.
Thank you Gil Torres for posting this fabulous song. In 1961 when we had 45 singles I intended to play "A Little Bit Of Soap" and put the B-side "The Way You Look Tonight" on by accident and I was pleasantly surprised. The string arrangement on this tune is outstanding. Now 47 years later thanks to you I finally get a chance to see The Jarmels perform one of my all time favorites. Would you by any chance have the follow-up, "I Will Follow You"?
it was a great time we had in philly that nite, paul and I spent about an hour talking about Bobby lester and his Moonglows,he was huge moonglow fan..lol..

It's not EZ to take a Jerome Kern classic from the 1930's and redo it as an uptempo doowop and soud great but the Jarmels did it!!!
