  • Every time I hear the part at 2:38 I burst out laughing!

  • 2:38 XD

  • I hate when the solos are.out of.the key with the song...

  • @zephmeupemily

That technique can sound amazing when used sparingly and when the soloist uses it to build and release tension. The problem is when people take it too far for no damn reason. That said, I usually love Herbie but he has his moments.

  • theres a good reason why the keytar died a sad and lonely death.....

  • Ndugu Chancler is grovvin' the CRAP out of those drums! Sooooooo Tasty

  • The crowd is Awesome !

  • cool Be kind and nice with me and I will be with you

  • Epic..

  • I dig Herbie as much as the next guy, but I am on the ground laughing at 2:39! XD

  • also Tell me your fantasies

  • I love this version, because it souds much better with real bassguitar.

  • This is smoking. Big time.

  • lol Im a young girl with the most incredible smile

  • I love chameleon, and it was awesome up until 1:25 when the keytar started going berserk.

  • OMG! Thats awesome! Guess "Chameleon" stays for such all way spantaneous gamma pertubations" they played. Great improvizing!!!

  • this song is full of shit

  • this song is full of shit

  • im fine with jazz, its cool music that i just can't really comprehend, i like a more straight melody/harmony, but i understand why people like it (except free jazz, thats just wierd)

i just resent the fact that i have to play this song for my year 11 music class...

  • This song just funked me very hard

  • And not a single fuck was givin on this day...

  • I don't know why, but this song make me think in a box fight.

  • funky bastards

  • y im i doing a dance tht looks like i hav water in my ear and trying 2 get it out

    STOP IT HERBIE !

  • ok so i play the piano and im thinkin wth i can do all of of tht

    3:00 OH MY D=

  • i like the drummer's haircut

  • oh yea and "mercy mercy mercy", love that one

  • It quite weird for me, I feel jazz but I just can't digest it except for the new orlean style jazz the fun exciting ones

  • i dont listen to this kind of music...but this blew me away!

  • They seem to be quite bored :)

  • Super rhythm section! what a groove!

  • Classic

  • check that Keytar!!!!

  • Bassist playing and tuning at the same time = extremely badass

  • Loooooooooove this!!!

  • muito bom som da pesada....{brazil}

  • @lethoful muito bene

  • lol, Herbie Dove head first into synthesising technology when it came out. I wish he was playing an acoustic or electric piano and not a damn keytar

  • This bassline is a masterpiece itself.

  • this is a sadowsky new york bass...listen what a sound...Well done Roger, as always..

  • I like chameleon but that keytar sounds like shit

  • Comment removed

  • @justsomebassist Hebies keys sound sucks, I miss the Arp, Rhodes and clav d6

  • Damn! That's funky

  • @BlackThoven this is jazz-funky

  • look at those clothes that jus spells fashion

  • The bassline is nice; but I can't help wondering how the song might have sounded if it had been Jaco Pastorius on fretless bass, It's no secret that he and Herbie were tight friends. Oh, the possibilities.

  • THe bassist tuned while he played… it doesn't more badass than that folks.

  • @BassGuitarGuy128 Hell I've fucked and played at the same time! Nothing can top that...now I'm a real badass!!

  • Getting oral sex from a prostitute terrorized by Charlie Sheen #priceless

  • these guys are playing instruments true to the game , some donald byrd miles davis grover washington ronnie laws lonnie liston smith jazz at it's best good listening music

  • i consider this more funk than jazz

  • @unknownbassist67

    Its jazz fusion

  • I prefer old school jazz (Django Reinhardt), but this is still a classic.

  • Playing this on drums in my Jazz Band <3

  • The patented bass groove+A million variations= one song?

  • That bass grove will live forever, it's just amazing.

  • To those who say this shit is weird or that it's intellectual music, the monk's said the same thing about Bach's music when he invented what was to become the modern music system. In art, there's always the avant-garde and the usual bullshit. Dave Brubeck is really old jazz. Très passé. Check for Stravinsky and Debussy or Coltrane, if you don't see where these guys are coming from. There's a whole world of contemporary music for you to discover.

  • if they got rid of that weird keyboard...thing and replaced it with a trumpet or a regular piano, i think it would be a lot better. right now its sort of funk meets rick roll.

  • @eagle8burger Well Chameleon is a moderate funk piece, but more often then not, the bass line is used to create an enormous solo section out of the song. Keytar was an experiment in this case

  • the bass rules .. the rest is intellectual pleasure :)

  • love n sax

  • The sax dude had WAAY much Mary Jay.

  • This is soo creative! :)

  • I plat Barri Sax! And yes we did play this! We play and lots people love it! Our HS Jazz Band has one of the best Jazz band in the City!

  • That's bill Evans on sax .... One of the heavies ... It's all a matter of taste. Check out Stanley turrentine if you like a more traditional inside groove funk blues player. No denying bill's greatness though ... They are all masters of the saxophone. If they all sounded the same what good is that?

  • WONDERFUL SONG AND VID!!!

  • Super tight.

  • badass bass player, one of my favorites

  • Denzel Washington?

  • that sax guy kinda sucks

  • Chameleon! I Choose You!

  • vou ve-lo amanhã.....espero grande espectaculo

  • This is my keytar-jammin' song!

  • LOVE THIS SONG, we play it at band practise all the time. everytime he trys to get the band together, we just play the chameleon. it ALLWAYS works :D

  • I enjoyed this, impressed with the bassist ability to keep it through all that bulshit from Herbie

  • It's kind of a "hip" thing for the jazzers to play "out". But in this video Herbie might've gone "off road" a little soon. I'll be surprised if he is running out of ideas "in key" already... or maybe just getting bored... Sometimes I think jazzers can be a bit selfish when they the audience sit through those really out stuff for like straight 2hrs. It's impressive to pull it off but not everyone has the ear for that..

  • Sounds waaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyy better with a big band and without the weird effects.

  • who the hell dislikes this?!?!?1

  • thumbs up if you think the black guy with the piano thing basically ruined this song.

  • @Ace4176 >:I

  • 19 people are deaf and blind

  • id totally give that saxophonist a blowjob

  • Wow Bill Evans sucks!

  • swank bass line

  • My 3 year old son could play a stronger "keytar" line then that bullshit. Lots of respect for HH, but that is just bullshit noise!

  • @trenettles thats jazz dude!! live with it!

  • @DuffCowboy barely jazz

  • @trenettles sometimes its better hit the right keys, than hit lots per second. You cant argue with herbie hancock, and of course your 3 year son not even get close to herbie hancock solo, but lots of respect for your son.

  • @trenettles im pretty sure your phenom son didnt produce over 50 records, win 12 Grammies or become one of the most influential Jazz and Jazz Fusion musicians in history. you obviously have no idea what you're talking about.

  • Leon Ndugu Chancler on drums....DAYUM that's funky

  • Comment removed

  • this is a great song but the little cal and response thing at the beggining between herbie hancock and the tenor sax player is seriously lacking on herbie hancock's part

  • That's crazier than insanity itself and also more awesome

  • When we played this song in band, we called it the "porno song"

  • I jusst downloaded this mp3 at ezmp3grab..com

  • Such an awesome bass line

  • @xJ4ckD4nielsx

    Someone described 1:26 to 1:42 as "side-slipping"

  • @xJ4ckD4nielsx duuuuuude... sry i mean. douuuuuuche

  • @xJ4ckD4nielsx You're a retard lmao

  • @xJ4ckD4nielsx you are an ignorant fool

  • @xJ4ckD4nielsx you're ignorant, congrats on not understanding a thing about real jazz music.

  • @xJ4ckD4nielsx actually i agree in part...but its just that jazz is not for everyone..doesnt make jackyd ignorant. this sounds awful to me too but i bet they are having great fun playing it. i always think much jazz is more for the players than the audience. most peoples ears are tuned to simple harmony, jazz is often an intellectual pleasure.

  • @eddypfunk

Damn, I enjoy listening those accords to the fullest! Great stuff

  • @eddypfunk The Best Comment I have ever seen on youtube in my life...

  • @eddypfunk listen to Dave Brubeck. Best jazz musician ever.

  • @dcco76: I'm not impressed. Go to a Dave Brubeck youtube vid and lick his butt there.

  • @eddypfunk I can't agree with you more man! You just told it like it is...

  • @eddypfunk i love jazz and I appreciate that you realize jazz is more often enjoyed by those who play jazz

  • @eddypfunk I don't think jazz is too hard to digest, but fusion? That's a different story ;)

  • @eddypfunk it's not music past 1:24. Music isn't about "fun", it's more than that. It's about connecting yourself to your surroundings in a meaningful way. None of the notes they played after 1:24 did that. I was totally diging from 0:35 to 1:24 though...

  • @tpstrat14 Who are you to say what's music? And what the hell is this about connecting to your surroundings? That sounds like a load of rubbish to me. This is jazz my friend and just because something is atonal or dissonant does not make it non-music. You wouldn't say the same thing to Stravinsky would you?

  • @StrawberryJungle To each his own, I guess. That shit just sounded bad to me.... just horrible...... whereas from -:35 to 1:24 was freakin amazing...

  • @tpstrat14 Aaah well, fairy nuff :)

  • The keyboard kills it .

  • Hancock sounds infinitely groovier live than in the studio

  • @deanoproskater who cant? =P

  • 0:13 is that denzel? lol

  • @JordanAdameMusic No it aint foo

  • @marrllly i know its not i was just foolin around hahah

  • HOW THE HELL DOES HE BEND ON A KEYBOARD?

  • @homeworld4 LOL. Exactly my question too! hahaha

  • @homeworld4 Effect pedals?

  • @homeworld4 magic ;)

but probably a pitch bender something like a digitech whammy

  • @homeworld4 on my friends keytar, he can bend by using this dial thing near the head pretty wicked with a patch like this one

  • in my jazz band when our conductor asks us for something, out of nowhere we just start playing this song hahahaha. It's just so funny and awesome.

  • Incredible. Thanks for showin it. God bless you

  • Bassist looks like wesley snipes!!!

  • @MrTowelboi This guys name is daryl jones and he played some time in the band of miles davis. and then he toured with the rolling stones. but i don't know what he's doing now.

  • Masters of the ridiculous, sho' nuf'. Big thanks to y'all! B.

  • @Moog167

dude he came to a clinic at Capital University and he was TITE!

  • @cheesicles Uggghhh I'm jealous!!!!

  • at 2:40 it sounded like the beginning of the theme to halloween when michael myers shows up

  • You can jam to Chameleon every couple months or so, but it is really overplayed. Especially at Philadelphia jams!

  • Incredible! I know some "jazz purists" probably hate this song, but I'm open to just about anything...

  • will always love this song, but will at the same time always despise those awful 'piano-guitar' things lol...get back on the real keys Herbie!!!

  • Im learning how to play the bass line in jazz band. so far this is my fav song to play in jazz band

  • We can't repel funk of this magnitude!!!

  • YES KEYTAR PWNS, I know this song on drums..

    {Tom-Foolery}

  • Someone burn that wretched keyboard and give that man a Rhodes piano!

  • I love that bass line

  • nice one ;) learned the bassline, too. But the First part.

  • this funk jam is just ..tasty holy shit. you cant help but groove to this. i learned this bass line the second i heard this song

  • best jam ever.. :D

  • Not the Bill Evans I had in mind when I saw the title. =(

That's not to say this isn't brilliant.

  • This is one of my fav song song to Play in Jazz Band!

  • @Z8llama I jammed to this with a few friends the other day. Wasn't very familiar with it b4hand, but we had a blast.

BTW, what key is it in? I thought Bb major, but I ended up in Eb Dorian.

  • @IAmTheClayman well over here they're doing it in Ab.... but it's a II-V progression, so you have Bbm7 (Dorian) and Eb7 (Dominant) but this is jazzzzz :) so have fun using other modes like Lydian b7 on the dominant

  • @Z8llama

lol! I played Canteloupe Island in the jazz band I was in last year! This sounds really fun too! =D

  • @Z8llama mine too!

  • @Z8llama for sure me to

  • epic ending herbie can move those fingers!

  • The drummer is Ndugu Chancler
