@hospitory yes, I must improve my english, that's what I meant.... but realy the first part is way too much for my ears..... btw as regards the drum part, you've done amazing job. realy nice!
Excellent demonstration ! I just have one question, where can I find such play alongs ? Did u make these ? or are they from Tommy Igoe's Groove Essential Package ?
Nice man...you sound great. Really fascinating stuff. How do I get started working on this? Seems like you're at a point where you "hear it" well enough to just do it on the fly. How did you get there?
I don´t know of any shortcuts or secret methods, I guess the thing is with these kind of exercises is to work on getting your subdivisions right and after working a lot on the specific types of exercises getting to know how they "feel" and sound, it´s only a matter of focused repetition in my book.
@yiorgosaeklive I recorded the drums in apples recording/mixing software Logic. I had 2 overhead mics, one on the snare, one on the hi-hat, and on the toms. So I could alter the volume, effects etc on each track. If you don´t have Logic you could use Garage band, which is like a light version of Logic. Hope I got your question right and this answered it!?
@nniiaamm88 Hi! You want a method for practising this stuff? In that case I would recommend that you get this book, practise the exercises with a metronome and if possible, record yourself. The objective here is to make the grooves sound exactly like they should even though they are displaced or modulated (I.e. if you recorded yourself and removed the click or music it would sound like a normal groove) Hope this answered your question! /Seb
I play alot of death metal, but this stuff is always much more fun to watch and learn. You are an excellent player and this video inspired me to do some sweet grooves like this. Good job man, keep it up and keep on inspiring!!!!

@CharbelSalem Thank you! I made these tracks myself in Logic and one track is from tommy igoe´s "Groove essentials". There is a cd with examples that comes with the book but no play-alongs....
Haha... well, that´s what one may feel when executing a 16:th note displacement for 4 bars. =) Like "Yes", made it" or "Yes, that´s how you nail it" =)

Good playing. But this isn't really that advanced or very modern. Dave Weckl was knocking things around like the grooves you played back in the 80s. I enjoyed your polymetric Thomas Haake groove you did more. I don't know who this Gavin Harrison guy is but I imagine he just watched the next step and wrote a book citing Dave Weckl. Or is there more to the book? Please tell me there is :)
I´m not claiming they are modern and how advanced these concepts are would be quite subjective, at least for me the 16:th note permutations were (are) very challenging timingwise. To play the pattern is one thing, to make it groove is another. The weckl book is just scraping the surface while Gavin´s is a bit more in depth and covers more of the theory behind permutations ,metric modulations etc. I´m just checking out 9 out of some 100+ grooves/exercises. /Seb
Your right my claim on 'advanced' was purely subjective, you see, I watched your polymetric groove thing first and I expected a lot from this video...my bad. Weckl discovered beat dislocation by accident one day when he was playing with Jay Oliver.
I watched Gavin on a track called 'porcupine tree' I really like those fills that he does in the end ncorporating double bass drum, and the double bass drum groove at the end with a mixture of triplets and 16ths is sublime.
Just takes getting used to. You can't get frustrated with displacement. it's not how you hear it, it's how you feel it. As long as you keep that in mind you will get it.
Thank you very much! I´ve been playing for 12 years now. I watched some of your clips, great playing as well! Especially for only playing since 06, NICE!
I just opened the book yesterday and the third or fourth exercise (the first 16th note displacement with click on 80 bpm) totally blew me away. :) That didn't happen to me with any drumming book for many many years!
This displacement concept is totally sick, but watching your video, I see how much you can gain by getting through this book.
That´s not accurate, it´s my original copy. The thing I´ve done (as with all my drum-books) is having them spiral bound wich is a very neat way of keeping your books fresh, especially thicker ones!
Aha, ja kanske, men det hade nog inte jag klarat! Jag måste nästan se notbilden för att fixa grejjorna (till en början dvs.) Kolla Gavin´s sida för några gratisexempel!
00:53 I like it ;)

@harrypar1 Maybe you mean to say they are in different Keys? To me it sounds nice, but maybe I´ve listened to too much jazz....

so there is effectively just a 7/8 measure played that leads into continuation of the 4/4 for the first groove?

Hi Hospitory, I advise you not to show the video to Gavin, you see that you have a non-genuine copy of the book.
Maybe it's a new version that I do not know ...
