For all the people saying its so too bland and and "loud" and whatever, I'm not sure what you think the ocean is like, but generally its blue everywhere and holds a lot of power... This is how this piece is meant to be played. For those of you who are saying it isn't, you clearly don't play piano, and never will be able to.
Yes I love Chopin. Find also this a little bit metodich and miss the real feeling for the music.Otherwise she is very good, in many other pieces of music I have listen to.A very good tecnique.
When I first heard this I thought "Wow, she's very talented to be able to do this". I found myself returning to it that very day. THEN when I heard it, I FELT IT. Didn't think about how it was happening, just got wrapped up in it. It sent shivers down my spine, a mixture of sadness and happiness, struggle and hope. Imagine making someone feel that way without saying a spoken word or or having any personal contact with them. Purely aural. Incredible. This is music at it's most powerful to me.
I love Lisitsa and I love Bosendorfer; together, absolutely amazing. I don't know whether or not this DVD track is of her playing all 24 in concert, but she seems exhausted (not smiling like she does in Op. 10 No. 5). Bravo!!!
If I could play like this... ! *_* I don't have enough vocabulary to say thath in English but I can say in French you are so "exceptionnelle, merveilleuse, talentueuse, virtuose, prodigieuse, admirable, élégante, surprenante, prestigieuse,... !". All these emotions in your music that's like a dream *_* :)
Mother of Christ! Do mine eyes deceive me!? Since when have I seen such passion, such flare and such power? The world... is a wondrous place to live with people like this around.
Difficulty Scale 1-10.. what would you rate this? I am trying to learn it and maybe I could ask my piano teacher to teach it to me? (I'm not a beginner)
Playing in front of an audience is a learning process just like learning how to play the piano itself. Each audience is like a fingerprint (or a snowflake!) - totally unique and never the same. Play in front of an audience over and over again and you will find yourself growing, not just more comfortable with playing in front of people, but becoming a better pianist and musician as well. A true musician can feel their audience and a true artist learns from them.
Look, ms Lisitsa is obviously a good pianist who play beautiful music in a professional way, but if you call this playing great, you obviously haven't listened to many great recordings.
@Mralibabarooibakkie I'm so glad someone else had the same reaction I did to this. The beauty of Chopin is how he wrote to provide contrast and transition from loud to soft, heavy to light, etc. Her dynamic range is narrow, she plays almost completely ponderously instead of varying the weight of touch, and she seems to interpret at most a handful of measures together in her phrasing (rather than the piece as a whole). To me this had barely any emotional impact.
You're too busy trying to criticize an undeniable professional in her field to hear and feel the power, emotion, freedom, and epic-ness this piece conveys. She is playing it with power, while the phrasing and melody of the piece is still absolutely clear. I don't think you understand how much thought and effort she puts into the piece, and understanding the composer's intentions behind the piece.
@SergeOfArniVillage We aren't that busy to criticize. She is killing chopin. This is way too fast and the fact of the matter is that no matter how hard you practice or effort putted on this what really matters is how it sounds. this is half-killed. Lisitsa try to slow down, what is important is the music not the speed. and composer's intention doesn't matter, I could press a C and give an extraordinary intention, and that sound is nothing, it's all about sounds.
@morriganzero (I'm SergeOAV, this is my new account)
No, she is not killing Chopin =) I agree that the sound of the music is what matters most in a performance -- ALWAYS. Why do people constantly make the mistake that because something is quickly played, it is unmusical? Baffling.
I did not make up my mind that she is a brilliant pianist because of how quickly she can play the piece. When I listen to this, audio only, I am bewitched by the *music* she makes.
@icedragontt In this sort of piece, the dinamics don't really matter. So long as you can hit all of the notes at the right time. timing and speed seem to be the operative things in this sort of piece and she got both of those down. Chopin's main intent with this piece was to make it sound like the ocean.
I love that you held back at 1:45 before the tonic, nice and dramatic. Me and partner are both keen amateurs and look forward to your Kreutzer and Spring Sonatas when you come to London in May (checked your public calendar) - don't forget your umbrella!
My favourite Etude. You make it look so easy. You have inspired me to give it a good go tomorrow. But you do yourself an injustice by clipping off the beginning and the end.
I love your music (feature it on my homepage ^.^). I'd like to make a suggestion that you sometimes post annotations as Ann Fontanella does. I would love to read your comments as I listen to your work. I would also like to think that you and Ann could be friends (you live fairly close) and there might be a duet one day.
Can't post a link here, but Ann can be googled. The Beethoven Violin Romance is what I am specifically referring to. Edit: it is also on my favorites list.

I first became aware of this wonderful etude when Vladimir Ashkenazy played it during an interview conducted by the late Huw Weldon on the BBC Monitor program back in the 1960,s. I felt iI had always known it & i still love to hear it . It must be the most satisfying experience to have grand piano resound under ones fingers.
Hello. I was looking at your recital dates and noticed that you would be in Dayton, OH on March 11th and 12th. There was no venue or ticket information. Would you happen to have that info?
@ValentinaLisitsa Your perfection freaks me out!!!! You are extremely talented!!!Well done!!!I feel a little bit jealous..I will never play the piano the way you do!!
Surely Chopin had a higher purpose in mind for this work than to simply run up and down the keys as an exercise. She plays the notes without any rhetorical quality. In short, she does not speak.
@shusarik I beg to differ. I think she puts emotion into her playing. You can tell by the sound not by her expression. At the end of the day, people really care about is the music, not her expression.
@sorablade314 Yes, in theory an etude doesn't demand much phrasing or lyricism or nuance on the part of the pianist, but it is still a piece of music which can be played tastefully! :)
@shusarik I absolutely agree!.Couldn't have put it better myself. There is no heroic quality here.Just another routine performance. No layering and balance of textures.Another day another dollar. What a bore!
@tommy1973able ita been the same concept for hundreds of years: emotion, soul, beauty. but we all know that the stuff we hear on the radio will be forgotten about in a few years, and all that matters is that classical music will never go away because it is true emotion. anyways i also wish they would have more of it on the radio. i can remember the one station ive heard before but ive never heard chopin on the radio. its a shame such a great artist goes unrecognized to the public :(
Imagine she is an ugly, nasty old dude with the very same ability. Do we care about her facial expression? Do you? All kinds of talented cooks have different physical characteristics associated with their musical abilities. Mainly, I think it is about making sure your neck doesn't hurt from bad posture. Every body is different.
I love her playing, she is a super star. But, this is not my favorite interpretation of this piece. Not a criticism because taste is in the ear of the listener. She is remarkable.
Beautiful and scary piece. But not that difficult as I had expect. When i tried it myself an hour ago it was very funny.Only learned 15 seconds but this is normal for me.I am very happy.Did wrong first and played 2 notes at the top. Then I looked at youtube and couldn´t find anyone playing so and checked the score better. Will see if l coninue or choose some other work. But this is absolutely the best Chopinetude and best version.
Thanks a lot for your perfect beautiful playing Valentina.
The melody is brought out better by ashkenazy...horowitz, cziffra, etc. but maybe that is the acoustics of the hall she is in as opposed to the intimate recording studio. I always enjoy Lisitsa while she may not compare to the legends..
Extremely convincing and concentrated live, uncut performance of this utterly tricky final of Chopin's opus 25!!
If this young lady looks bored? Totally outrageous!!
No - she has no time to even think of that sort of emotion!
An insult to even think that of a professional musician in a situation like this!
This music demands onehundredfiftyeleven percent concentration all the time - for it bites you back so fast that you'd never know what happened - and if you blink, you'll have missed it!
bored????are u kidding she looks possessed by that piano...bored is the look your spouses give u when in bed.if you dont like valentina im sure u can find some other garbage to watch on youtube
I think for non-pianists, not all videos show the effort and intensity required to perform a piece. But this one does, as well as being a great interpretation to listen to. Nice.
How can i play this better and faster? It seems when i play this piece and switch my fingers from 1 to 5 etc. when going up it slips sometimes and i Cant seem to switch fingers at fast speeds, what can i do?
How do i play faster? When i try to switch my fingers from 5 to 1 when going up it seems to slip sometimes and feels a little tricky D: ...... should i just stick to super slow practice?
I don't understand why people click on the 'dislik'e button for her videos. I'm honestly need to tell you that she is very talented.
I think you should click on "Dislike" button only when you can do better than her! Everyone should respect these talented people. As least, to get to this high level, they had paid long periods of time in their like to do it. I feel sad for someone who disrespect our life time to making music for people...
@anniepianist click on "dislike" has nothing to deal with the fact she is very talented or not! it's just that some people dislike the style,or her way to play, "strong" enough etc... some think her play is unmusical, but it doesn't mean they think she is untalented!
@anniepianist You're right.... having said that though I feel justified when I click dislike on most Lang Lang videos I watch (and I can barely play chopsticks).
@anniepianist If anyone can play better than her then they obviously have a life and have no need to hang around YouTube and click on thumbs down buttons! I honestly can't understand the low level of some people's honor, respect and politeness. Shameful
I totaly agree with you. Also if they did not like it there is a whole list of videos they could have clicked instead of clicking the dislike button. In fact I think youtube should remove the dislike button all together. I do not play but when I see skill and talent I have nothing negative to say to anyone who has the skills and talent that they do.
@anniepianist cri·tique [kri-teek] Show IPA noun, verb, -tiqued, -ti·quing. –noun 1. an article or essay criticizing a literary or other work; detailed evaluation; review. 2. a criticism or critical comment on some problem, subject, etc. 3. the art or practice of criticism. You don't need to be a Mozart in order to criticize music, darling. Learn to cherish other people's opinions, instead of being a ham-fisted bigot.
Im not sure who I am in love with. The Piano, Valentina, or the music..... It's all three. A most magnificient of combinations.
I send my love.

I get the feeling Rachmaninov liked to tourture musicians. Good thing for us!

@jmw102667 LOL seriously. I thought that too, any of his piece would require a normal person to have like at least 6 hands.

I think for non-pianists, not all videos show the effort and intensity required to perform a piece. But this one does, as well as being a great interpretation to listen to. Nice.

I feel sad for someone who disrespect our life time to making music for people...
anniepianist 1 year ago 24
@anniepianist click on "dislike" has nothing to deal with the fact she is very talented or not! it's just that some people dislike the style,or her way to play, "strong" enough etc... some think her play is unmusical, but it doesn't mean they think she is untalented!
don't be so narrow minded!!!

@anniepianist You're right.... having said that though I feel justified when I click dislike on most Lang Lang videos I watch (and I can barely play chopsticks).
LAnonHubbard 1 year ago
@anniepianist If anyone can play better than her then they obviously have a life and have no need to hang around YouTube and click on thumbs down buttons! I honestly can't understand the low level of some people's honor, respect and politeness. Shameful
chh5555 1 year ago
@anniepianist
