Salsa is a seperate latin dance which is becoming very popular socially and also competitively in its own right. Search 'World Salsa Championships' and you'll see what I mean!

Maybe there really were two championships with Slavik/Elena winning. Strange that Dimitri/Karina didn't participate in both.

well, I'm sure the ladies who don't place weight on their heel do bloody fantastic back basics, cucaracha actions, split weights, promenade runs, walks, pretty much anything in samba, etc. fact is that you cannot be well grounded if you don't have sufficient weight on the heels, period. subsequently without sufficient grounding the dancing becomes light and shallow and the chance of losing balance increases. not to mention the wonders it'll do to your connection with your partner.

"Hardly"? What are you smoking or is your concept of "hardly" different from everybody else's? Each and every time the standing foot settles you need to have a flat footwork in order to, you know, settle on that foot. That generally happens at least 50% of the time that is spent on a beatblock. Just take a basic samba action, like whisk as an example. The time that you spend with a flat footwork is approximately 1½ beats out of the 2 beatblock. How is that "hardly"?

Every step is a ball flat on the standing leg. The actual part where there's only ball of the foot on the ground is the one that lasts for a split second. If it didn't it'd kill the action since you wouldn't be able settle your weight on the leg (or you would be grossly late from music).

Funny thing. We had few private lessons from a very distinguished coach who teaches the best of his country and many couples from the top pro and amateur field. We studied samba movement and you know what was the first thing he told me to do?

"Collect your weight on your heels so you feel you have a center."

I reiterate. If the weight is on the ball of your foot you're doing something wrong.

most of these dancers will have sponcers, places like DSI and Superdance, theres lots more, but they get all their dresses, shoes and everything free with the sponsership, if you where to buy one of these dresses it would cost thousands lol but they are sooo stunning. I'm an artistic roller-dancer and i had a blue dress almost identical to the gold one. The body is a stretch lycra type fabric, like AceyBlade said. But the part you actually see is hundreds of srtands of glass bugle beads.(very expensive =S) They're sewn to stay on, but its amazing... one little bead breaks and several strands fall off. The dress was hand made of course and cost approx. $800.
