Most important thing: Learn to use thump stroke, down- and upwards, then pluck with index and middle finger. It's the most effective and fastest way to slap (--> Victor Wooten,Marcus Miller,Bill Dickens etc.)

Speed isn't everything, I use my middle finger as a pick. But it's when the music I make fits perfectly with what my drummer is doing that really makes it special.

I like to be able to just follow that kick drum and hi-hat(and know what the guitar is playing so I know what notes to play of course)

why do people insist on trying to being the fastest? speed is not music, its just noise. personally i like to take it slow-medium tempo when slapping, just has a better feel, which is how the slap techique is emphasized the most.
