Most of the rain fell on the evening of the 8th into the morning of the 9th. The 100 year flood for Houston in a 24 hour period is 13 inches. This was more like a 500 year or more event.
I was not even 50 miles away from Houston and we got less than .50 of an inch from this event - and this was on the afternoon of the 9th which was a Sunday. The rainfall totals were extreme in many areas - however the westside of Houston, areas like Katy saw no more than 3 inches this event. The heaviest rain was on the North East Side of town, where an average of 25 to 30 inches fell. Southeast Houston, Central Houston, and even parts of Southwest Houston saw 10 to 20 inches. Airport saw 11inch
I remember that day also. I was at home in my apartment by Hobby airport. HEB was packed with folks trying to get food to hold them over. I-10 and HWY 288 looked like rivers. WAY CRAZY!!! i was working at Hermann Hospital at the time and it got it really bad. 18-20 ft of WATER IN THE NEW ADDITION ALONE!!! CRAZY STUFF!!!
I was 16 when this happened. We were out in Katy, TX, in Mayde Creek at the time. It flooded so bad out there, I got a blow up raft toy and floated down my street that had become a river. Fire ants were EVERYWHERE, and even saw a few snakes. Good times for me.
man you are lucky nothing worse happened to you. flood water + nighttime; not a good combo! I had just gotten off from job at 1960 and 45 area; barely made it home to where I lived in Aldine before it HIT. never thought Id see my neighborhood streets like rivers! water got halfway up our yard; but not in the house. people in the lower, back area of our subdivision werent as lucky; foot of water in their houses. I'll NEVER forget how crazy that was!!!!!!!!
I remember this storm, I just got out of school for the summer and I was about to become a sophomore that year in high school. My dad was on his way to work that morning, as he was traveling 59 & 610, parts of 610 was flooded out so he had to go back home and couldn't go to work.
Man i remember it like yesterday.. How many times do you see interstate I-10 become a raging river and with 18wheelers and metro buses totally submerged
