I don't know if they still give tours or not but that is the air-tractor plant in Olney Texas.I got to take a class tour there in the mid 90's.I think I was about 12 or 13 at the time and it really got me interested in flying!
@yehar your right , I assume they meant Celsius that would make more sense , or they could have used water to lower the melting point of the NaCl ... or other polar chemicals
I stand corrected although my original reasoning behind it was that under most circumstances it is not efficient at all. After all under most circumstances the only reason to spray with a duster is to avoid tire damage on crops (if you are planting odds are there are no crops under you). But if a area is not accessible with a traditional planter then this is reasonable, ie. marshes and burned forests.
@BlackandChrome The reason planes are used to spray pesticides/herbicides etc is that individual farmers don't usually have all the necessary equipment to apply the chemicals in the quantities needed in a timely manner, or the HAZMAT facilities to store them etc.
Dusters do, and the airplane lets them service more clients in the limited time available for application, because you can't just spray chems any time you please.
No way wheeled vehicles could cover the ground in that limited time.
@BlackandChrome you can also cover a much larger area with a crop duster than with regular spraying methods. if you have a field that is about 1000 acres that makes it a lot easier and faster to spread chemicals.
Wouldn't it be better to have a high wing so the pilot can see the ground better?

@falcoperegrinus82 No, you'd need another structure to support the boom and that would add weight.

Really wish the narrators would get their terminology correct. Aircraft wings don't have "webs" they have "ribs".

OK, 900 F is fine but then it must be a mixture of salts, not pure NaCl
yehar 3 months ago
900 degrees Fahrenheit? Sodium Chloride melts at 1474 F

@BlackandChrome It's much quicker to spray with a plane than a regular duster.
