Thank you for making videos with story and cooking.
This takes me back to when I was growing up as a kid, we used to always gather round our elders for stories from their youth, also around the holidays I used to help cook for posadas and we get to share all sorts of stories.
Clara this was wonderful. To those that can't respect the purpose of what she's doing here on YouTube trying to help families survive during this economic time, at least respect the fact that she's lived long enough to not have to put up with crap from from idiots.
@Mikuruification Guess what, learn how to use grammar. Before you troll around Youtube talking to random people assuming, they're chopped liver. Seriously, GROW UP & S T O P wasting your time replying to people because it makes you feel good inside.
I think it's better when people make things from scratch rather than buy it in a box because they add all those preservatives an chemicals...no wonder there is so much cancer in the world. People didn't have cancer back then. Now we have all this modern technology and people are becoming more lazy and buying processed food. Who knows where it comes from.
wow talk about bringing back memories. Back in the late 50's early 60's we lived in Morocco and one of the dishes my mother brought back that she made about once a year, because of how time consuming it was to make was couscous. The North African version of couscous is a stew that cooks for hours in a special pot, with an insert for the couscous (the pasta) to cook in. The pasa didn't used to be a 5 minute boxed item that we have now. The ingredients for the stew vary, but the taste is yum.

A lot of us probably have grandmothers and grandfathers that could tell us stories like claras. I learned too late in the game that my grandmother had some stories I'd like to hear, they were written off by my parents as talk that was out of date (farming with mules, how they stretched a dollar, what it was like during the depression and the war as farmers where purchases had to be approved)
If you have grandparents who are still "with it", they might love to tell you stories of their past.
@daw162 I agree. When I was a child, I had great grandparents, great grandmother and grandparents. Now I only have a granddad and no chance of asking more about my nan's childhood. She passed away couple of weeks ago and with her went my chance. So just do it. :o)
Love your videos! My Grandma is 100 years old and I would give anything to be able to be with her in her kitchen cooking again. You remind me so much of her & her stories about the depression. Thanks so much. God bless you.
Besides all of Clara's other great attributes, I figured another reason Paula Dean took to Clara...the butter! I really enjoyed this segment and seeing the pictures of your mother and dad, both good looking people. God blesses you and your family Clara and thank you for sharing with all of us now. Hope you are feeling well and doing okay.
my eyes are so full of tears, to youth out here, you should really take heed to this because here is what you call ''a real woman'' god bless her heart. she can cook, clean, healthy, sweet, busy, she gets things done. at 94 she is still at it., a true definition of a woman, she is so cherished and probably don't know it, she probably don't care either. woman like this don't need to fit in or pretend, they are home-makers with purpose and wisdom, this woman along with my grandma are geniuses.

Ms. Clara has great knife skills. I would have to whimp out and use a cutting board for safety. She said in another video that they did not have a cutting board when she was a girl, so she has years of practice.
@Victorian9322 yes because every joke is a racist slur. wake the fuck up. oh and i spell it like PANNIES because only perverts pronounce the t but you wouldn't know because everything is too literal for miss anal over here.
wow chicago. especially during the great depression. Amazing. I took a class last semester that talked all about the arts in chicago and how things evolved because of the steel production, construction, and other industries. Very cool to see the continuum of that history in a simple video like this
Love Clara's videos, but someone needs to buy this woman better knives. I laughed so hard when she banged the turnip on the cutting board. Clara, you are a jewel!
don't you all just love internet? everyone (I mean literary EVERYONE) can talk about whatever they want! I praise internet and I also praise you Clara for having the courage to do such thing.
@Miriana1231 I'm not even sure if this lady is still alive. her last video stopped in 2009 and I've looked all over the internet and couldnt find anything new about her. Just old stuff.
love it, you remind me so much of my mother-inlaw. she is Italian too, my husband thinks your cute like his mom. she has dementia, I wish i could have learned more from her. gatta have your book.
the only thing about clara and these videos that can make me sad is the fact that clara does not have much time left here on earth... its a sad, cruel thing to say.. but its the factual truth. might aswell 'get used to it', as with every other fact, people usually close their eyes on.
Thank you Christopher for sharing such an amazing lady with us; her life is inspirational towards helping everyone stop and be thankful for what we have. Take care.
i love to think about the fact that claras grandmother probably lived over 150 years ago.. thats .. amazing... i mean technicly she lived before hitler, stalin, roosevelt or chruchil was even born!! must have been pretty damn awesome being there, able to see whats happening with your own eyes... in YOUR country.. too much immigration and international issues today... its taking its toll on the countries themself.. being so busy sticking their nose in every other countries buisness but its own..
Dear Clara :) m a north african and i do Love your couscous Looks yummy from wer i m :x but i tell you that you can't beat my mum wen it comes to Cous_cous (( Kesksou )) Love u and i Love your Shows !! Respect.
Since one of my ex girlfriends mother was a Berber woman (specifically from the mountain range in Morocco), I started eating couscous and now you can even see me prepare a meal on youtube! Check out my channel.
I made this Couscous dish myself, and it was very tasty. I used instant couscous, and my own variation in prep. I boiled the veggies and then strained them, saving the broth to use with the instant couscous. Somehow my couscous was mushy, thanks to the package calling for too much liquid =( I'll def. make again, however with half was much liquid as the package recommended ^^ Overall very good.
I love this show! I bought the cookbook and I love it too. I hope she will consider sharing her gardening tips too, maybe a "Great Depression Gardening" show? ;-)
My grandma also just used a paring knife to cut almost everything. No big Japanese knives for her. A small paring knife and she could take almost nothing and make a wonderful meal. She also went through the depression. Clara is utterly genuine which makes her utterly enchanting. Keep them coming!!
I love this! People don't cook like this anymore. It's nice to be taught how to prep meals like this it's a wonderful thing not only for my generation to learn but we will be able to share the knowledge with our future children as well. Your knowledge and experience will live on for generations to come Clara thankyou
Wow, over 2 hours to make it, or more. I buy it in a plastic jug, all you do is ring a cup of water to a boil, add a little butter and salt to flavor, then add the couscous, turn to fire off, cover it and in 5 minutes it is ready. Great stuff.
I just got your book; and my dd insisted we read it cover to cover. You are helping another generation through some tough economic times by sharing what you went through during the Great Depression. It could very well be that countlesss children will go to bed tonight with full bellies and be spared hunger and deprivation because of what you have shared with us all. I pray for continued good health and God's continued blessing on your life for helping othersGod bless you Miss Clara.
I saw all the videos of this sow in last few days. Watching her cooking makes me so happy. Clara is very charming in her way laugh. I've been indulged in watching them, so pitty I've already watched all the vidos! I love this story the most that her father came from Tunis and his family came from Italy, how her granma cared her dad.
I LOVE these shows, so I hope no one takes it personally if i mention that the arabic is wrong. It should be right to left, and the letters should be connected into script :-P
I come to this place everyday just to unwind. The theme music and just listening to Clara makes me feel so relaxed after a hard and stressed day at work. Never tried your recipes yet, but thanks for having this here.
What a great stress buster just listening to your stories and the simplicity of the cooking. I wouldn't want to deal with the depression like you had to, but people back in your day were just so kind and thoughtful of one another.
The women has been cooking for 80 years, she's been alive for 94 years, I think she knows what to do and how to do it. You do things your way, Clara will continue to do things her way, like the past 94 years.
your gonna cut yourself if you keep cutting vegetables like that. and cous cous takes like 5 minutes to make not 2 hours! you don't need to steam it like that. just use a little broth from the veges.
I loved you on the "Daily Show" Clara! I hope that the media is not bothering you or your family though.
I loved your stories about your grandfather and father. That photo of the handsome man...which one was that? Did you ever meet any of the relatives who may still be in Tunis? (for Clara and Chris) That would be cool to find them huh? I love this recipe! God Bless you Clara and I hope you are here for a long time. (and Bless your grandson for bringing you here to the Internet!) Peace!
Love this video on cooking couscous. What a sweetheart Clara is! I want to be her granddaughter, cooking side by side with her in the kitchen, while she tells these stories. Delightful!
I love watching Clara, but this video shows a slightly more complicated way of making couscous. To put it simply, chop carrots, onion, celery and saute in a little olive oil and butter. Couscous cooks with equal parts dry to liquid, so once the vegetables are soft, I usually add some frozen peas, salt/pepper and about 1 cup of stock. When the liquid boils, add one cup of couscous, and immediately remove the heat, and sit for 5 minutes. Afterwards, fluff and enjoy
I love you! I had to subscribe... My new favorite channel! :) You actually remind me of both of my grandmothers, one is 94 as well and very upbeat and just happy. The other loves to cook though! Thank you so much for this outstanding video! God bless you Clara.
Omg like when I watch some videos my eyes kinda roll off,but watching your videos gets me excited, like my eyes are wide,I was tired, then I came to your videos and now i'm wide awake, cause I'm like shaking my legs cause im like omg what's going to happen next, cause your videos are so fascinating, and their just amazing and your your so cute..(:
My wife knows how much I love your videos and last night she made a wonderful supper( dinner for non- mainers) and was bragging how she fed a family of four for three dollars. Thank you clara.
Every time I see that there is a new Clara video out it makes me so happy!!! She is the type of lady I would love to sit and chat with every day. Thank you Christopher and Clara for sharing a part of your family with me.
Thank you for making videos with story and cooking.

Wish it was like that today.

@jojococoa;

@stdrange people usually had knives and whetstones in those days
in other words...they sharpened their own knives lol

I love watching Clara, but this video shows a slightly more complicated way of making couscous. To put it simply, chop carrots, onion, celery and saute in a little olive oil and butter. Couscous cooks with equal parts dry to liquid, so once the vegetables are soft, I usually add some frozen peas, salt/pepper and about 1 cup of stock. When the liquid boils, add one cup of couscous, and immediately remove the heat, and sit for 5 minutes. Afterwards, fluff and enjoy

mmmmmmm i wish i had time to make it that way today! but this video did give me ideas for the couscous i will take to work today.
