Shame that he is capitalizing on the others music. He did write some ok songs himself but the good Badfinger stuff was Pete and Tom's. May they rest in peace. They were fucking great. The key word is "they".
Joey had some GREAT songs in Badfinger, but he really treated the others in the band poorly. If you've ever heard the phone calls of Tom Evans that were taped before he died, they are so revealing. 'He broke the band up. He's done a lot of things." says Tom. They came out with the Badfinger book Without You: The Tragic Story Of Badfinger. Also, Joey acts as if he is constantly buzzed with alcohol and drugs. Check the interview at the end of this.
It is bullcrap that Joey Molland tours as Badfinger. He should be billed as "Joey Molland Of Bandfinger". He is a good guitar player and has a right to play Badfinger songs live. But Joey and a bunch of schleps is not Badfinger. And Joey didn't write or sing most of the Badfinger classics.
At the ASCAP pop awards held in Beverley Hills in 1995 Joey Molland accepted an award for jointly composing "Without You" - in the presence on stage of the late Tom Evans' son, who had come to accept the award on behalf of his father. The picture taken at the time - of the distraught son turning his back on the whole thing - says it all. AND Joey mimes to Pete Ham's voice??? Makes Norman Petty sound like a saint!
@60syeah Th Badfinger boys died in the wrong order... good to nasty. Nasty remains. Tom killed himself after a argument with Molland - Molland wanted a share of Ham & Evans songwriting royalties. Sadly for the kids of Ham & Evans the fucking judge gave it to him..
@45rpmSINGLES Truly a pity!!!! I never knew any details other than two of them were gone way too early. Were both sucicdes???? One of my favorite bands!!!
@eteachout Well, there is one particular video on youtube of Joey lipsinking on an old Badfinger song, but it is Pete Ham's voice. Now tell me....is that right?
"Jolly Mollard" here wrote songs for Badfinger that all remain in obscurity. This song was written by Pete Ham. Pete and Tom Evans wrote and sang the Badfinger songs that were "hits" except for "Come And Get It" (written by McCartney). Molland has simply capitalized on the work of Pete, Tom, and the association with the Beatles. The "Beatles" references used here this inept host were scorned by the members of Badfinger back in the early '70s, but Jolly Mollard is more than happy with them now.
@soyounoat I disagree that Molland's songs that "all remain in obscurity." Much of his songs are very underrated. Off the top of my head I can name "Constitution," "Icicles," "Should I Smoke," "Suitcase," and "Better Days." All of these songs are on the level of Pete's and Tom's songs in my opinion. He may have been a nasty guy when he was with Badfinger but I always cringe when I hear people say he wasn't a good songwriter. To say that is to undermine the great band that Badfinger was.
Man, this is great. Joey Molland, very underrated guitarist of Badfinger. Too many of his songs go unnoticed on the Badfinger albums. If you want to hear some great Molland gems, listen to "Friends are Hard to Find" and "Mean Mean Jemima" from No Dice. Incredible songs.
If anyone on this planet deserves to make money off of Tom and Pete, it's this guy. He may not have his voice, but I really can't think of anyone else that should be doing it in his place.
so sad that Joey Molland continued to make money off the songs Pete and Tom wrote...read the biography about Badfinger, "Without You" it tells the whole story.

He's trying to keep it alive, but he isn't getting much help. In a professional back up band, he'd have had maybe a second lead vocal and certainly strong back-up vocals. This sounds like it was simply thrown together for the gig. I've been a Badfinger fan since their first song was heard in the US. I understand the comparisons between Pete (R.I.P.) and Joey, but it's like the wife of your best friend you don't entirely like...your best friend chose her. Enjoy their music.
He should stop singing all Badfingers tunes. To bad the original members are not around to enjoy the revival of the 1970's music. Badfinger was awesome. This guy is a goof.

Molland's versions of Pete Ham's songs just aren't as good as the originals. Of course, Molland's covers are the closest thing and at least he's keeping the name of Badfinger alive.
Also, I was incredibly surprised when Def Leppard covered this song!
Benarunyon--haha I swear the phrase that sprang to my mind too, was "god-awful", and it's not something I say often. I also agree with your comment about the stench. As evidenced by the posts, a LOT of people find this ultra-distasteful on a lot of levels. That voice, ugghh.

No Matter What, I love Badfinger-- You stand here on earth just you. But in Heaven no matter what you do they are all still here with you. I listen to your music every day. There is NOTHING Better---------------------------------Teresa in Ft. Worth, Texas
There's bad blood between the Badfinger families and Joey. He accepted an ASCAP award for the success of "Without You" and in his remarks never even bothered to credit Pete & Tom, who wrote it! Too bad the other three members aren't around to set the record straight. Bad show, Joey.
favorsham you dickheaded twat.Get your facts right before making comments like that. A.S.C.A.P PRESENTED THE AWARD AND EVERYONE HAS GOT THEIR AWARDS..AS FOR JOEY I HAVE SEEN HIM LIVE AND HE ALWAYS CREDITS PETE AND TOM.
I love Joey's song: "Ide Die Babe" from the Straight Up album. Great Album! I think it was there Best. Produced by non other than Mr. George Harrison" & Mr. Todd Rudgren.
"Sweet Tuesday Morning" was a nice song written by Molland. This was by Ham, though, wasn't it? Molland was the David St.Hubbens of this group with his (then?) wife becoming assertive in band politics prompting Ham to leave in protest.
Yep - still looks good and sounds good. And I especially like that the vid shows his playing and fingers. Thanks (and thanks, Joey for again playing a song, well, that you probably got sick of 35 years ago).
I'm 48. sung this song mang times in cover bands as well as &)'s Big Timers. played both rythme and bass. don't know the history nor want to know.Great song acceptable LIVE performance ( loved the fact he forgot to kick on his distortion pedel) 12 pages of comments this guy performs as well as Phil Collins covering songs Peter Gabriell sang.
ENJOY THE MOMENT. At least he performed in BAD Finger. Better to be a HAS BEEN Than a NEVER WAS.
I agree, i love Say no more, don't know many others apart from you who agree though, i just think its very underrated and better than Airwaves which was good as well.
Interesting clip. Joey is trying hard but the backing band is ragged and so are his vocals. Gosh - the announcer looked like a used car salesman and even butchered his name (we have Joey Mollard). Badfinger could have been massive with just a bit more luck, aye?
Ah, give Joey a break. There's also a clip on YouTube of Tom Evans' version of Badfinger doing "Baby Blue" in about 1982, and it's pretty bad. What can you say? Copies are never as good as the originals. Just accept it and enjoy it for what it is.
This is not sad, just a guy trying to make a few bucks. Really instead of blaming Joey'w wife or this and that, the real blame goes to Stan Polley. He stole the money and never paid for any of his crimes. You can't help but wonder if the band had gor the money they deserved, what would have happened. We will never know. WB needs to re-release Wish You Were Here as I am sorry for screwing up the band.
I just saw Joey at Hippifest. He played the songs almost note for note and sounded great! I'm sorry about what happened to Pete and Tommy, but thank G-d they have one last member still touring and playing Badfinger songs. Those songs are 35 years old and rarely get played now. He played lead guitar and sang harmonies on the originals and has every right to make a living. He also said during the show that songs were all written by his band mate Pete Ham. If you like Badfinger go see him!
In the late 80's and 90's- it was Joey Molland and his wife that kept the Badfinger memory alive. I used to get a newsletter from them and well remember them inviting Tom Evans family to stay at their home. I've never read "Without You" by Dan Matovina and never plan to.Pete Ham's daughter, Petra should listen to other people views not just Dan Matovina's.
Joey is an awesome talent. Just Fantastic! I got to see him several times in the late 90's and early 00's and he always autographed lps, and was so funny and sweet. His voice sounds great. Check out his work with Rain from the 60's. Your jaw will drop!
If Pete and Tom had been of sound mind in the first place then they would of faught back, other musicians/singers have dragged themselves out of the gutters where they have been shat on to fight another day, this Joey guy is being made a scape goat instead of adressing the real issues that the 2 suicide guys probably had drink problems and mental issues
I know little of the trouble the band went threw and who did what to whome but i do know one thing you have to be fairly un-hitched in the 1st place to top yourself so blaming this Joey guy is wrong. (see below for prt 2)
Most people don't know that Joey Molland didn't sing much of anything in Badfinger, especially not the hits like this one (Pete Ham sang this one) & I used to hate that he was carrying on the Badfinger thing with him being the only survivor left. Now I'm glad someone is carrying the torch for the band & still doing their music. You can't hold grudges forever; he has to make a living & doing it playing Badfinger music is great for the guys we lost, R.I.P.
Bamamarv-I used to HATE Joey, now after reading THE book, I just dislike him. To save room, I won't go into detail, but it was Joey's wife that caused alot of ill feelings between Joey & the band, same as Yoko did for the Beatles. Yes, Joey needs to make a living, but he is losing his voice. I can't, off the top of my head remember anything major that he sang in the band, except for Suitcase, Suitcase and honestly, he did a good job with that. It's one of their best!
I'm aware of this & I pretty much agree with you. I have Dan Matovina's book & I have the Behind The Music episode on DVD, which glossed over too much. I agree with the Yoko comparison & Joey's voice this night just isn't there. Whether he has one anymore I don't know & he should hire a singer regardless. Funny how wives sometimes screw things up; Supertramp had the same problem and I had a great band with wives that actually fought each other with their fists at (what became) the final gig!
It is very likely a SG copy. I remember Joey gave an interview once where he stated he sold all of his stuff to survive. Joey looks pretty poor and worn himself, teeth missing, probably trying to get back on his feet again. It is a hard life in rock music.
Cut him some slack. Joey has been through alot of heartships and disppointments if you know the Badfinger story, its a sad one. Good to see that he still carries the torch for badfinger.
I agree, Joey is not the young lookalike McCartney he used to be. However, years of sadness, alcohol, and drugs takes it's toll on many a rock idol. Their painful shortened lives testify of it. A good lesson for all; life is short, beauty fades, the "love" of money is the root of all evil.
I hope Joey finds joy and peace. It doesn't seem like he has found it yet. I am a lot happier being out of the rock business myself.
I played with groups called "Rye" "Audio- Syncracy", "Raz-ma-taz", "Carrierwave" and sat in with different groups as lead guitarist/singer all in Northern Michigan. Badfinger played at Cadillac, Mi. Highschool in 1973-74. I became a Christian not long before Pete Ham ended his life. Everything changed for me after that. We did a lot of Molland songs, "Sometimes" "Suitcase" I had Joey's voice down pretty good, but did't have the range he did.
This is horrid. It reminds me of what Mike Love has done with the Beach Boys. Hmm. Some people could do with a tap on the shoulder sometimes & directed elsewhere (like Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger).
Very nice to see Joey live nowadays...it means that he is still active and playing all those songs for people which are happy to see him. I want to see him someday too :)
the point isn't that the people complaining think they could do better, it's that it sounds like crap, face it, I am a musician and I COULD have done it better....so there.
Sounds TERRIBLE! I appreciate that he'd like to keep the music alive, but he's killing it with fourth rate musicians (to say nothing of his vocals). I'll stick to listening to my CD's and remember the way it was.
The only claim Joey Molland will ever have is being part of the Pete Ham Badfinger, when Badfinger came up with classic tunes, mostly written by Pete Ham. Why else would Joey Molland do these old songs? Molland is a heartless musical opportunist.
how bout get off the guys case. i know the story too but 99% of any people who say this sucks /that sucks cant do any better or in fact, cant even come close. thanks to the poster of this clip its all worth seeing .just enjoy we all know its missing members.
This is a tough one. The overall performance is in the average range. But...I can sort of feel what Joey must feel. Playing a song that he was part of some 35 years ago. Knowing that two bandmates killed themselves. It can't be easy for Joey, especially given that the rest of us can click a mouse and see the original Badfinger performance on demand.
Even Mike didn't realize they were going to be called on stage to accept the reward until the last second (see Matovina's article 'The VH1 Documentary - Badfinger: Behind the Music.)
Should Joey (or Mike, or Bill Collins) have said something on-stage or after, during interviews? You bet. They could have set ASCAP's clerical error straight right then and there.
Should Joey have held the plaque up and pumped his fist on stage? No, of course not; but this questionable behavior is not the same as claiming he co-wrote 'Without You'.
It seems he got caught up in the moment and exercised poor judgement; that's all.
I am a hardcore Badfinger fan. I often cannot watch certain videos without tearing up. This video makes me tear up for another reason - the stench. I wouldn't go see Joey Molland if it were free.
Yeah, he's a real class act. By 1983, Joey has won the wars between them. Tom is a completely broken man emotionally, financially and artistically. So what does Joey do? He makes sure he gets Tom's few paying gigs cancelled by bad-mouthing Tom's band to promoters. Next, he sues Tom for royalty money from "Without You." Tom committed suicide in November 1983. It seems that his ex-friend and ex-bandmate certainly helped push him toward it. Dan Matovina's book, pp. 376-77
Whoever criticized "online" reviewers (who slagged this attempt at recreating Badfinger songs) can kiss my ass. Who do you think us "online reviewers are"? Fans dumbass! And true fans realize this SUCKS! Badfinger WAS Ham and Evans, and Gibbins, not Molland and these guys off the street!
This guy is right where he belongs...On a 3rd rate show showing off his 3rd rate talents..He's nothing without Pete Ham and Joey Molland the true Badfinger forces... You can hear it..
I am glad that Badfinger's music is still being played and since he was a part of the band, it is better than some other band...it is hard to judge. I guess I don't really understand what the deal was...I have heard some say that there was a riff between this guy and Tom Evans...I just don't know.
Let the guy make a living for petes sake. Power to him. The guy introducing him did not even say his last name right. It is a tough and heartbreaking business. I give him credit for toughing it out.
Yeah, he ought to know what a "tough and heartbreaking business" it is, after he pretty much strung up the suicide rope for Tom, kicked away the stool, and then dumped on his memory (according to firsthand accounts in Dan Matovina's book--if anyone has any evidence to the contrary, I'm not aware of it)
I give him credit! He just wants to keep BADFINGER alive, thats why he performed "No Matter What" I still see he uses his Gibson SG.Don't forget, Joey perfomed almost all the solo's on BadFinger records. I had the privilage to Meet BadFinger many moons ago, in Bridgport,Ct. I sat down and enjoyed a drink with Mike Evans.
Let's give the guy his due - he's done a pretty good job live - it's not as though he can duck behind studio overdubs.
You have to have to have a good range to sing it anyway.
Cinemashow - keep looking on amazon - I bought my book second hand about 5 weeks ago and I'm still getting through it. They were a great band just down the road (60 miles) from me. Would love to get hold of the DVD documentary on them - I have it on tape recorded from BBC Wales I think?
Im just such a huge fan and their demise sounds tragic. Im going to look for the book. I have many tunes on my iPod (smokin live version of Day After Day from iTunes). Shi#@$ng on a great part of the the soundtrack to my teen years. Special place in hell for the people who drove them to their demise. Almost makes lawyers sound like a good idea....no, I didnt say that!
Give the guy a little respect, He's tring to cover for two guy's in his band who committed suicide long ago. it is too bad they fell victim of the Beatles break up and bad management.
The Beatles breakup had nothing to do with the demise of the group. They were screwed into the ground by Stan Polley, whose criminal mismanagement sent Pete over the edge. And according to Dan Matovina's book (which is backed up by the recorded phone conversations on the accompanying CD), Joey played more than a minor role in finally sending Tom over the edge, too. Joey's been trying to cash in on Pete and Tom ever since they died. Sorry, I have no respect for someone like that.
Joey said the working title of "With A Little Help From My Friends" was "Badfinger" No, Joey. It's Badfinger Boogie. LOL. This is from November 2005. Joey is great!
A correction, the name of this band is NOT the Fab Five. Couple of these guys were former Gary Lewis & the Playboys members. 3 of them to be excat. They weren't having a good night here!
well. this is a little diffrent. i saw him in august 2006 in hamilton at a festival he was playing and he sounded so much better then in this video. his show i give him at least 9/10 stars but this video only gets 2/10. not at all his best. this makes him look bad!
Shame that he is capitalizing on the others music. He did write some ok songs himself but the good Badfinger stuff was Pete and Tom's. May they rest in peace. They were fucking great. The key word is "they".

There's bad blood between the Badfinger families and Joey. He accepted an ASCAP award for the success of "Without You" and in his remarks never even bothered to credit Pete & Tom, who wrote it! Too bad the other three members aren't around to set the record straight. Bad show, Joey.

"Sweet Tuesday Morning" was a nice song written by Molland. This was by Ham, though, wasn't it? Molland was the David St.Hubbens of this group with his (then?) wife becoming assertive in band politics prompting Ham to leave in protest.

I guess it's really easy to bash someone when they are down. Joey Molland is a gifted singer/songwriter/ musician who is no longer 20 years old.
His last Badfinger album with Tommy--NO MORE--is a brilliant disc. Also, check out Joey's 1994 CD, THE PILGRIM, a vastly overlooked little gem.

Tom Evans version of Badfinger from 1982 included Mike Gibbins on drums and Bob Jackson on keyboards.
Jackson was in Badfinger with Molland,Evans Ham and Gibbins for part of 74 up until Petes death the next year. He also played on th "HeadFirst" album.
He isn't some hired third rate musician.

If Pete and Tom had been of sound mind in the first place then they would of faught back, other musicians/singers have dragged themselves out of the gutters where they have been shat on to fight another day, this Joey guy is being made a scape goat instead of adressing the real issues that the 2 suicide guys probably had drink problems and mental issues
cryspop 4 years ago
I know little of the trouble the band went threw and who did what to whome but i do know one thing you have to be fairly un-hitched in the 1st place to top yourself so blaming this Joey guy is wrong. (see below for prt 2)
cryspop 4 years ago
Most people don't know that Joey Molland didn't sing much of anything in Badfinger, especially not the hits like this one (Pete Ham sang this one) & I used to hate that he was carrying on the Badfinger thing with him being the only survivor left. Now I'm glad someone is carrying the torch for the band & still doing their music. You can't hold grudges forever; he has to make a living & doing it playing Badfinger music is great for the guys we lost, R.I.P.
BAMAMARV 4 years ago
Bamamarv-I used to HATE Joey, now after reading THE book, I just dislike him. To save room, I won't go into detail, but it was Joey's wife that caused alot of ill feelings between Joey & the band, same as Yoko did for the Beatles. Yes, Joey needs to make a living, but he is losing his voice. I can't, off the top of my head remember anything major that he sang in the band, except for Suitcase, Suitcase and honestly, he did a good job with that. It's one of their best!
Benayrunyon 4 years ago
I'm aware of this & I pretty much agree with you. I have Dan Matovina's book & I have the Behind The Music episode on DVD, which glossed over too much. I agree with the Yoko comparison & Joey's voice this night just isn't there. Whether he has one anymore I don't know & he should hire a singer regardless. Funny how wives sometimes screw things up; Supertramp had the same problem and I had a great band with wives that actually fought each other with their fists at (what became) the final gig!

Joey Molland has been a leach from the day he joined Badfinger.
An arrogant jerk who wasn't there for Tom Evans when he needed him, and drove Tom further into despair.
Up yours, Joey.
mrbhew 4 years ago
why is the headsock of joey's guitar taped over ..is it to hide the Gibson logo or to hide the fact that it is a "copy" Gibson SG ...anyone know
gal00li 4 years ago
It is very likely a SG copy. I remember Joey gave an interview once where he stated he sold all of his stuff to survive. Joey looks pretty poor and worn himself, teeth missing, probably trying to get back on his feet again. It is a hard life in rock music.
carrierwave1 4 years ago
Cut him some slack. Joey has been through alot of heartships and disppointments if you know the Badfinger story, its a sad one. Good to see that he still carries the torch for badfinger.
spybond007 4 years ago
I agree, Joey is not the young lookalike McCartney he used to be. However, years of sadness, alcohol, and drugs takes it's toll on many a rock idol. Their painful shortened lives testify of it. A good lesson for all; life is short, beauty fades, the "love" of money is the root of all evil.
I hope Joey finds joy and peace. It doesn't seem like he has found it yet. I am a lot happier being out of the rock business myself.
carrierwave1 4 years ago
what band were you in
gal00li 4 years ago
I played with groups called "Rye" "Audio- Syncracy", "Raz-ma-taz", "Carrierwave" and sat in with different groups as lead guitarist/singer all in Northern Michigan. Badfinger played at Cadillac, Mi. Highschool in 1973-74. I became a Christian not long before Pete Ham ended his life. Everything changed for me after that. We did a lot of Molland songs, "Sometimes" "Suitcase" I had Joey's voice down pretty good, but did't have the range he did.
carrierwave1 4 years ago
This is horrid. It reminds me of what Mike Love has done with the Beach Boys. Hmm. Some people could do with a tap on the shoulder sometimes & directed elsewhere (like Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger).

The only claim Joey Molland will ever have is being part of the Pete Ham Badfinger, when Badfinger came up with classic tunes, mostly written by Pete Ham. Why else would Joey Molland do these old songs? Molland is a heartless musical opportunist.

It seems he got caught up in the moment and exercised poor judgement; that's all.
koolala 4 years ago
I am a hardcore Badfinger fan. I often cannot watch certain videos without tearing up. This video makes me tear up for another reason - the stench. I wouldn't go see Joey Molland if it were free.
Benayrunyon 4 years ago
Not a great performance, but all this Joey bashing is pathetic.
magentas444 4 years ago
Yeah, he's a real class act. By 1983, Joey has won the wars between them. Tom is a completely broken man emotionally, financially and artistically. So what does Joey do? He makes sure he gets Tom's few paying gigs cancelled by bad-mouthing Tom's band to promoters. Next, he sues Tom for royalty money from "Without You." Tom committed suicide in November 1983. It seems that his ex-friend and ex-bandmate certainly helped push him toward it. Dan Matovina's book, pp. 376-77

Let the guy make a living for petes sake. Power to him. The guy introducing him did not even say his last name right. It is a tough and heartbreaking business. I give him credit for toughing it out.
dunskie 4 years ago
Yeah, he ought to know what a "tough and heartbreaking business" it is, after he pretty much strung up the suicide rope for Tom, kicked away the stool, and then dumped on his memory (according to firsthand accounts in Dan Matovina's book--if anyone has any evidence to the contrary, I'm not aware of it)
daveinmilwaukee 4 years ago
I give him credit! He just wants to keep BADFINGER alive, thats why he performed "No Matter What" I still see he uses his Gibson SG.Don't forget, Joey perfomed almost all the solo's on BadFinger records.
