Not sure if you knew or not, but that symbol was originally Indian, not German. In fact it's used with Buddhism, a religion known for its promotion of peace and harmony. I'm not sure if the Nazis directly ripped it off from Indian culture or not. If so, it'd be ironic, since they were so anti-non white.

The wardrode department working on THE BLUES BROTHERS bought all of the nazi armbands directly from the NSWPP. True story. The dialogue in this scene(the nazi leader's megaphone rant) was copied almost verbatim from the NSWPP's hotline message that was on thier national phone line at the time.
