The voice of Danny Gallivan doing the playoffs is such a great memory of springtime. Then again, just hearing Danny Gallivan's announcing hockey was great!
@ethicomm I totally agree with you. After Danny Gallivan retired, all the English voices for the Canadiens sucked to the point that I now watch the Habs in French.
Roger Doucet singing his patented bilingual version of "O' Canada", and the late great Danny Gallivan calling the shots, even though I was (and still am) an L.A. Kings fan since 1975, I DID get to witness many a beatdown the Habs gave everyone (including us) at The Famous Forum in Montreal during their 1970's dynasty (1971, 72, 1976-79),.
Back when hockey was good, even the announcers were original and unrehearsed, unlike todays WWE style broadcasts of over the top bullshit play by commentary that is so rehearsed and polished it come off sounding like SHIT! the french are funny last year he was voted an allstar and they fought tooth and nail to back him now hes gone and they hate him ,haaaa wonder why they have to overpay for free agents .
Habs have 1st, 3rd, and 4th line this year with a solid, talented, and experienced D. A promising goaltender who will be motivated to erase last year's nightmare. Leafs are heading the right direction with a better D but are still missing a lot of tools on offence. Their goaltending can do the job. Habs are in better shape. Sorry leafs fan. Pussy Grabovski will never impress me
Haha r u kidding?? The habs offense sucks compared to last year. Even as a Leafs fan, I always liked Koivu. Same with Kovalev. Getting rid of your captain AND your biggest offensive talent? Bad move, Mr. Gainey. Bad Move.
PS. Grabovski can kick ur Montreal ass any day of the week, and we scored 1 more goal than u this year (250 to 249), so dont insult our offense. Oh, and thanks for Komisarek.
well my friend you might know hockey, but you dont know the habs...is how i should of phrased it. what has mtl done with saku as their captain? a change was needed. saku was never captain material. he is not a uniter. mtl would have never improved have they not made these changes. they had no choice. and to thank us for komisarek is a ridiculous statement. he is overpaid and overrated. you will see what i mean as the season carries on and the leafs play lucic. no upside with him.
oh and of course a team is gonna score lots of goals when theydont think of defence....thats a given. common sense really. you should save your trash talking until the season is at least half way done. the leafs will not make the playoffs, mtl will.
Dont think of denfense?? You're too funny. Anyways, not captain material? The guy was the most imspirational player on that whole team, especially with the whole cancer thing. And you may insult Komisarek know, but hey - wasn't it you guys who voted him into the all-star game? If so, you are the biggest hypocrite on the face of the earth. Finally, your little "playoff prediction" is something YOU should save until the season is at least halfway done. Case closed.
Nopiratekinghere1, you're the example of a stupid Leaf fan.
Let's start with the statement, "Thanks for Komisarek." Thanks for what, giveaways, stupid penalties. The guy's garbage.
The Leafs that we see in this video, no longer exist. Sure, the Habs were a great team and tough to beat, but the Leafs played with a lot of heart in those days, with these players. Today, the Toronto Maple Leafs are just a multi-sport corporation looking to monopolize sports in T.O and ripping off fans.
Diss Komisarek all you want, you have every right to. But need I remind you that it was you, and other habs fans, that voted the guy into the all-star game? Why would you vote for garbage? And why get so pissed over him leaving if you think he's so awful? It seems to me, that to the general Habs fan consensus, a guy starts sucking the instant he leaves Montreal.
Oh, and keep booing Carey Price. That oughtta make him better.
and the fags are fags always will be fags your gm is a fag who is your coach i dont even know no one cares about montreal faggg leafs are gonna smash your first line who is it again somethin like gionta gomez camelarri? hahahahhahah wow have fun seeing them try and pass luke shenn and komisarek haahha your DUNNN
lol funny how by the time the fags realize they need to rebuild the leafs will be condenders, come on you really think montreals roster can make or even go past the first round next year...oh that reminds me didnt they get swept in the first round on there 100th birthday hahaha u failllll
I'll make you a bet leafs have a better record than the habs do this year. I don't know how many times teams have loaded their rosters on free agent day only to have a shit team all season. Just look at Tampa Bay last year stacked on free agent day ended up to be a joke. Before you start bashing the leafs remember that you only played four more games than we did last year bud.
What a GREAT Team Montral had. They won 4 concectutive stanley cups then they had more Hall of Fame players on that team then some hockey teams have in a lifetime. Simply a GREAT team.
Had is a big word...they are just another NHL with a bunch of mercenary foreigners who could care less about the history...It's a pleasure to watch a Franco Ontarian like Marc Savard kick their ass, while the French Canadian representation on the Habs is that of big stupid goons like Lapierre, no skill Latendresse and the bastard Laraque...lol..what a joke. The Canadian tradition is dead.
they were not midgets. Lemaire 5'10, Shutt 5'11", Lafleur 6'0". Isnt a midget a person under 4 feet or something? Do you know your algebra or what? You stupid fuck.
im talkin about the present day habs camelari 5'8, gomez 5'10, gionta 5'7, hahaha in comparison to average nhl players that is a brutal first line there going to get crushed and what the hell does algebra have to do with someones height?? u must be french.....
algebra, math, counting whatever you want to call it, youre an illiterate mother fucker who doesnt know what a midget is. get your act together bitch. even the new habs arent even midgets. look up the word midget you MIDGET BRAIN
Gallivan....I could listen to his play by play forever...brings back the excitement and anticipation of hearing the opening HNIC theme and the all that followed for 2 1/2 hours on Saturday night...Playing road hockey and imitating the play by play of Danny Gallivan and Bill Hewitt
LOL I hope you do not mean the game or I do not know what to say, but Montreal hasn't lost a playoff series to Toronto since '67 I think and Montreal won the cup in '79. Montreal won the series if you meant that.
I miss the simplicity and purity of hockey games in those days. Notice the ice is just a white sheet with the Habs logo. No advertising. Also, the boards are plain white. No annoying ads for Tim Horton's, Canadian Tire, McDonald's, etc.
I agree...I always felt Dryden was overrated...he looked silly against the Russians in 72...and if it wasnt for the Habs puck control, and ability to strike at any time, the habs wouldve have been looking elswhere for a goaltender...I always felt Vachon was much better
In 1979 there was a French Separatist movement going on in Quebec. Roger Ducet changed the words to reflect the fact that the French-Canadians thought that their "rights and liberties" were in jeopardy.
No Place like the Forum...I was very lucky to get tickets for a Leafs-Habs game one Christmas while visiting my Girlfriend family...we had seats 15 rows behind the Habs bench...The whole family went and The leafs won 5-0...and I just didnt have the heart to cheer (I was a leafs fan)...would have been such bad form...Lucky to have taken in a game in each of the original Six Buildings before they were all moth-balled...all great places to watch a game.
There are great memories of this team Ill never forget, profoundly skilled and so thrilling to watch most of the time. Those 1970's Canadiens could compete well against anybody back then. I watched this exact game on tv. I was only 12 years old in 1979. Thanks for posting this video.
Look at that beutiful atmosphere in the Forum...you can feel the crowd's excitement...and the incomparable Roger Doucette....get rid of the U2/Vertigo shit they play now and the irritating horn...and the towels. Also, what happened to the fans in Montreal who would dress in their best clothes when attending Canadiens games and not sweats? Why are we emulating the simpletons of the NHL who have few if any Cups to their credit? It's a joke.
@Velebit So true...so much has been lost from the game...I remember the first time I went to a game at forum (having grown up in western Canada)...everyone was sharply dressed and it was festive and classy...the Forum was simply magical. What a great experience...taking in a Habs game then going out for a nice dinner and night on the town. Montreal is a real city.
Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy Guy!

PS. Grabovski can kick ur Montreal ass any day of the week, and we scored 1 more goal than u this year (250 to 249), so dont insult our offense. Oh, and thanks for Komisarek.
nopiratekinghere1 2 years ago
you dont know hockey...at all
mroy88 2 years ago
Taking this from past experience, I DO know that it is unwise to let your captain go to free agency.
nopiratekinghere1 2 years ago
well my friend you might know hockey, but you dont know the habs...is how i should of phrased it. what has mtl done with saku as their captain? a change was needed. saku was never captain material. he is not a uniter. mtl would have never improved have they not made these changes. they had no choice. and to thank us for komisarek is a ridiculous statement. he is overpaid and overrated. you will see what i mean as the season carries on and the leafs play lucic. no upside with him.
mroy88 2 years ago
oh and of course a team is gonna score lots of goals when theydont think of defence....thats a given. common sense really. you should save your trash talking until the season is at least half way done. the leafs will not make the playoffs, mtl will.
mroy88 2 years ago
Dont think of denfense?? You're too funny. Anyways, not captain material? The guy was the most imspirational player on that whole team, especially with the whole cancer thing. And you may insult Komisarek know, but hey - wasn't it you guys who voted him into the all-star game? If so, you are the biggest hypocrite on the face of the earth. Finally, your little "playoff prediction" is something YOU should save until the season is at least halfway done. Case closed.
nopiratekinghere1 2 years ago
Nopiratekinghere1, you're the example of a stupid Leaf fan.
Let's start with the statement, "Thanks for Komisarek." Thanks for what, giveaways, stupid penalties. The guy's garbage.
The Leafs that we see in this video, no longer exist. Sure, the Habs were a great team and tough to beat, but the Leafs played with a lot of heart in those days, with these players. Today, the Toronto Maple Leafs are just a multi-sport corporation looking to monopolize sports in T.O and ripping off fans.
vidlivs 2 years ago
Diss Komisarek all you want, you have every right to. But need I remind you that it was you, and other habs fans, that voted the guy into the all-star game? Why would you vote for garbage? And why get so pissed over him leaving if you think he's so awful? It seems to me, that to the general Habs fan consensus, a guy starts sucking the instant he leaves Montreal.
Oh, and keep booing Carey Price. That oughtta make him better.
nopiratekinghere1 2 years ago
i'll admit that some habs fans are retarded. also, montreal is probably the most hockey-crazed city, considering every game has 100% attendance.
komi only played in the all-star because montreal would rather have a montreal player than any other.
latendresse has always sucked.
well price is playing better now. as for booing him and cheering on an easy save, that's the retarded fans for ya.

The Laffs couldn't beat their own meat. They have no pride and play with no guts. (The vast majority of their history in a nutshell.)

and the fags are fags always will be fags your gm is a fag who is your coach i dont even know no one cares about montreal faggg leafs are gonna smash your first line who is it again somethin like gionta gomez camelarri? hahahahhahah wow have fun seeing them try and pass luke shenn and komisarek haahha your DUNNN
ahmingah 2 years ago
How will you feel when you see shenn smiling after another double digit loss? The next time the Laffs give 2 shits of winning will be the first time.
WatchVenusSpa 2 years ago
lol funny how by the time the fags realize they need to rebuild the leafs will be condenders, come on you really think montreals roster can make or even go past the first round next year...oh that reminds me didnt they get swept in the first round on there 100th birthday hahaha u failllll
ahmingah 2 years ago
"leafs are gonna smash your first line" How's that working out so far?
Irekyu 2 years ago
"They have no pride and play with no guts" You must be talking about Montreal? They were ragdolled by Boston and swept in the playoffs by the Bruins.
BostonGarden 2 years ago 2
I'll make you a bet leafs have a better record than the habs do this year. I don't know how many times teams have loaded their rosters on free agent day only to have a shit team all season. Just look at Tampa Bay last year stacked on free agent day ended up to be a joke. Before you start bashing the leafs remember that you only played four more games than we did last year bud.

What a GREAT Team Montral had. They won 4 concectutive stanley cups then they had more Hall of Fame players on that team then some hockey teams have in a lifetime. Simply a GREAT team.
vibra64 2 years ago
Had is a big word...they are just another NHL with a bunch of mercenary foreigners who could care less about the history...It's a pleasure to watch a Franco Ontarian like Marc Savard kick their ass, while the French Canadian representation on the Habs is that of big stupid goons like Lapierre, no skill Latendresse and the bastard Laraque...lol..what a joke. The Canadian tradition is dead.
vidlivs 2 years ago
Are you talking about todays Hsbs? If so I agree with you. Whats more I think todays hockey players are no talent goons.
vibra64 2 years ago
Even the current Habs are better than the Leafs will ever be.

yea sureee budddy first line of the habs couldnt even get on a rollercoaster at wonderland cuz they so short fuckin midgets
ahmingah 2 years ago
they were not midgets. Lemaire 5'10, Shutt 5'11", Lafleur 6'0". Isnt a midget a person under 4 feet or something? Do you know your algebra or what? You stupid fuck.
HisMajestyBobbyOrr 2 years ago
im talkin about the present day habs camelari 5'8, gomez 5'10, gionta 5'7, hahaha in comparison to average nhl players that is a brutal first line there going to get crushed and what the hell does algebra have to do with someones height?? u must be french.....
ahmingah 2 years ago
algebra, math, counting whatever you want to call it, youre an illiterate mother fucker who doesnt know what a midget is. get your act together bitch. even the new habs arent even midgets. look up the word midget you MIDGET BRAIN

and all the other small equipment, compared to these days...
pillifjonkan 3 years ago 3
I miss the simplicity and purity of hockey games in those days. Notice the ice is just a white sheet with the Habs logo. No advertising. Also, the boards are plain white. No annoying ads for Tim Horton's, Canadian Tire, McDonald's, etc.

Nice save Dryden....what a sieve he was. The most overrated goalie in history. Montreal always won in spite of him.
midaszone 3 years ago
What a waste of skin you are.
turboback34 3 years ago
I agree...I always felt Dryden was overrated...he looked silly against the Russians in 72...and if it wasnt for the Habs puck control, and ability to strike at any time, the habs wouldve have been looking elswhere for a goaltender...I always felt Vachon was much better

At :25, was the Canadian anthem different back then?
lafleursucks 3 years ago
Nope...that was Roger Doucet (the one singing the anthem) who thought those lines might sound better.
rickouel 3 years ago
In 1979 there was a French Separatist movement going on in Quebec. Roger Ducet changed the words to reflect the fact that the French-Canadians thought that their "rights and liberties" were in jeopardy.

it's hard to explain to people how great the Forum was.you could see the person sitting across from you on the other side of the ice.
you were close to the ice, close to the players.the Bell,Molson,Celine center just doesent cut it for me.

I was lucky enough to go to few games at both the Forum and Gardens...you could taste the tradition ti was so thick in the air.

Thanks so much for posting this. I remember watching this game on TV live, ages ago.
You hear the names again - Lafleur, Lemaire, Shutt, Gainey, Robinson, Savard, Lapointe, Dryden - how great that team was
Then hearing Roger Doucet sing again gives me chills
jfrankparnell 3 years ago 3
This is simply another occasion where the Leafs spread 'em wide for a good Habs' reaming. The Leafs have been the Habs' bitches for a long time.

Velebit 3 years ago 4
@Velebit So true...so much has been lost from the game...I remember the first time I went to a game at forum (having grown up in western Canada)...everyone was sharply dressed and it was festive and classy...the Forum was simply magical. What a great experience...taking in a Habs game then going out for a nice dinner and night on the town. Montreal is a real city.
