It wasn't Air Force 1, and there is no backup plane. There are 2 VC-25s in the fleet assigned to ferry the President, and are interchangeable, tail numbers 28000 and 29000. The call sign become AF-1 ONLY when the President on board (or any aircraft for that matter, except rotary winged aircraft, which are designated Marine 1 when the President is on board)..

Not to start conspiracies or sound like a jerk, but it is possilbe that the F-16 was trying to corral the VC-25 which might have been hijacked by a disgruntled pilot, which is why they weren't able to announce the flight!
BUT I prefer the idea that the VC-25 does not have to have permission or clearance seeing that a warning could have prepared possible terrorists or nut jobs to fire at the plane. There is something to think about!! Great plane!!!

It wasn't Air Force 1, and there is no backup plane. There are 2 VC-25s in the fleet assigned to ferry the President, and are interchangeable, tail numbers 28000 and 29000. The call sign become AF-1 ONLY when the President on board (or any aircraft for that matter, except rotary winged aircraft, which are designated Marine 1 when the President is on board)..

Highjacking a plane requires already being on it, by which point an f-16 probably wouldn't do much good. Though in 2001 they were ready to shoot down that plane that crashed in PA, just in case it did make it too close to Washington.

If you do respond over the frequency and report that you are not a hijacker (or if they tell you to land and you do not comply), instead of letting that hijacker do his business with that plane and killing the people on-board anyways, they will shoot the plane down.
