I would love to be a part of the pit orchestra for this musical...the clarinet lines in this number are outstanding. I absolutely love Judi Dench's rendition of this; so touching and moving, it truly is indescribable.
Thanks for posting this. I've not heard the studio recording. It's been out of print for a long time. I'd LOVE to get a copy. I've only seen her do this on a British talk show during the run of this production and it took my breath away. I never fully understood this song until I saw her do it. Check out this clip on YouTube Seriously. You can't take your eyes off her.
There are several other performances of her singing this. To watch her sing Send in the Clowns is a heart wrentching experience. It always blows me away!
From Shakespeare to Sondheim she can do anything and make us cry. I love reading the comments made about this song and all the versions and singers, and there must be hundreds. There are only 2 who can sell it, Glynis Johns and Judy Dench, no wonder that Mr Sondheim writes for actors not singers.
@dolbinau Peters is definitely on the list. If you read what Sondheim said after he saw her in the show, it's obvious he was blown away, to put it mildly.
I'm so happy that Dame Judi is performing at the Sondheim at 80 Prom on Saturday!
I almost gave up on buying tickets as it was going to make me quarter of an hour late for school, but I love Sondheim so I risked it.
Then yesterday I find out that Dame Judi Dench is going to be there, singing this!! I was so excited I could have cried. Then I listened to this, and I did cry!

I AM SO JEALOUS! How was Sondheim at 80 Prom w/ Judi Dench? Who else sang? You are so lucky, did the tkts. cost a small fortune? Here in NYC they had a Sondheim at 80 at a BroadwayTheater and City Center, and the tickets were a fortune!
@jotheodorou It was absolutely amazing! Maria Friedman, Bryn Terfel, Daniel Evans, Jenna Russell, Julian Ovenden and others performed, and they were all fantastic. I've loved musicals since I was about 10, but only discovered Sondheim a few years ago, so this was the first time I'd heard any of his music performed live, and it was one on the best nights of my life.
Tickets weren't that expensive, but they sold out within hours. I can see why, it was incredible!
Finally, finally. This song sung as it always should have been sung. It's about regret, anger, pain and Dame Judi did it to perfection. I hope that Sondheim listened...
This is the definitive performance of Sondheim's masterpiece. Abe Lincoln said it best: "I would give all I have, and go in debt, if I could write something half so fine as this."
was listening to this yesterday on the radio, and went to sleep thinking about it...just magnificent!!!!! great actress, great singer...is there anything she CANT do?
why oh why is this album so hard to find? If you do manage to find it is iswell over 100 dollars.... a brilliant version of the song, which is truly acted for emotion rather than sug for its purdy notes like some singers who dont get the message of the peice...
I'm not the sentimental type, going all teary-eyed and snotty over a song... but this really does that to me. There's a lump in my throat now... Profoundly emotional, they are, the lyrics and her performance.
Pure perfection! What else can one say. She sales this song better than any other performer bar none. She takes you along the lonely journey of finally knowing she can't have the man she loves, as he has moved on and fallen in the love with someone else. Unrequited love must be the loneliest love of all.

I'm just sorry she can't sing in tune. Probably worked better on stage than in audio only.

I grew up only ever having heard Judy Collins sing this. But since Dame Judi Dench's performances I have really "grown up".

All these years I've been telling people about the Barbara Streisand version, and this was here. Incredible.

Yes, but sadly, as Woody Allen says, it is the only sort that lasts . . .
