  • He wrote this song about Danny Whitten, the guitarist for Crazy Horse, and his descent into heroin addiction. Truly sad.

  • He didn't stay away from hard drugs. He was not unscathed. Brilliant but experienced.

  • Amazing!!!

  • Neil was great at "Live Aide". All his songs were great performances.

  • How can ANYONE NOT love that ? Astounding !!

  • A brilliant artist that was smart enough to stay away from hard drugs....proof that great artists don't come from drug abuse...

  • I've seen the needle

    and the damage done

A little part of it in everyone

    But every junkie's

    like a settin' sun.

  • only artist at live aid thats not british

  • @rhcprxbandits

There were 2 sites. Philly and Wimbly.

This is at Philly which also had acts like The Cars, who are not British.

  • @ExtremePeppers

    "Leaving Las Vegas"

    Good movie.

  • my life the junkies against crime.liberation front

  • ya I saw him lately and it's not great - slow man! Neil - plug in the guitar please!

  • I've seen Neil Young twice - first time the best concert of my life. The second - the worst concert ever.

  • Just unbelieveable! Wish I had been to that concert........

  • 1 man,

    1 guitar,

    1 harmonica,

    10.000 people.

    Neill Young forever.

  • @sbdonsy Actually, the statement should be 'you're dumb", which kind of puts that negative label on you, doesn't it? Just saying.....

  • Met Neil Young in 1974. One of the biggest thrills of my life.

  • he can't sing, he can play two cords, his lyrics and style are what makes his music so awesome.

  • @bamond8016321 your dumb

  • Neil Young is the BEST songwrither ever. He's a genius !

  • Epic...

  • Does anyone else think that Dwight Schrute from the Office would make a good Neil Young body double? lol.

  • I came of age in the 70's, new music everyday on the radio that just blew you away. Where has the music gone? Today's generation has such crap, rap that encourages you to rape, metal that encourages you to kill yourself, and then of course there's dare I say the words Justin Beiber. Neil Young and the likes may have to carry the music scene for another 100 years or so.

  • @Bombeni I believe he is up for the task!!

  • @Bombeni Hi buddy. I sometimes despair too but don't lose faith, there is real music alive and happening too. Search for songs by Glen Hansard or his group Swell Season, this is very real music, a joy....

  • @Bombeni

so true. but at least neil is not alone. there's still Rush. :-)

  • @romaneberle ...bubbles loves em....i love trailer park boys...i want to live in canada 'cus fo neil and bubbles.

  • this is the best music ever made legendary man

  • something so hard its absolutely unbearable to most people.an all out thermonuclear strike on the body, a grizzly gnawing at your neck for days.....but stuck with it . Each minute will be slightly better, you may not realize.couple weeks (3 or so)plus some mental work you might be a success case...(you'll love yourself)

  • Unforgettable performance!

  • Ha, I actually forgot that Neil played at this show. I was there while still in HS + still learning my boundaries w/ ,,,, Stuff. I also had not yet started to appreciate the man. What a day that was. Great post

  • Excellent!!

  • The summer I finished HS....Damn..the memories of this concert..couldn't go that weekend...but we watched with the stereo hooked up to the tv which was no minor feat in 1985..great memories...and so many sad stories about the disease of addiction. My own included. Every junkie's like a setting sun...yes....we are...

  • Brilliant, thanks for the post!

  • i was 16 at the time and I didn't appreciate this... I'm ashamed!

  • @paddyfrog84 I was 17 at the time and waited all day for this :) and wasn't dissapointed

  • @okee9 nice

  • I have the DVD of heart of gold and from here to then he still puts his heart and soul into his music.

  • I was there at JFK...

  • 25 years ago right now

  • I caught you kickin in my cellar door To feed yer baby or to pay your hoar Gone, Gone, Ive got a gun The inner city is a big wasteland All of them people livin with no plan Gone, Gone, its time to run I scream its wrong because I understand That its too late, but Im just getting slammed Flowing blood, the time is running out I see the handouts and the damage done We cant afford to pay for everyone I fear this countrys like a setting sunnnnnn.
  • Niel is special...but not Dylan.

  • @levenshon Yeah, Neil can actually sing.

  • i love neill...but he has stick arms

  • wow thats sooo important, how shallow

  • what are u a fag. who cares about his arms. He is an icon who has wrote many great songs. But oh lets look at his arms, thats why people go see concerts, to look at rock stars arms, right?

  • I'm a bit deaf but have always loved the way CSNY have hit their guitars. Very rarely listen to lyrics, usually something horrendous. The economy of the guitar playing is everything. Neil there with his Martin..occasional thump, a twang here and there and a faltering voice that always seems to make it regardless. He was well deserving of the honour recently bestowed. The richness of Crosby Nash& Stils' voices in the choral glow will always give me a tingling 2nd skin. I love these guys

  • Pure

  • Neil Young is right there with Bob Dylan as far as song writing is concerned and to confuse him with neil diamond....good god....sickening! Deff one of the most important song writers in the past 50 years.

  • Certainly agreed. Neil was something else.

  • listen you dont know NEIL DIAMOND but i bet you know all the american idols you fag do me a favor put your empty head back in the sand and wait for the next taylor swift studio abortion STALE CRACKER!!!!!

  • Haiti

  • such a powerful song even in 2009 and will be be 50 years from now... Staffordshire England

  • how many people are standing there? Amazing

  • Mr P Gyngell this reminds me of all the times you'd play and i love you

  • It's not often that a song can hit you so hard. what a man. Even here in Liverpool his word have an effect

  • It's amazing how one man and his guitar can entertain a whole fucking stadium of people. You're a legend Neil, such a sad and heartfelt song.

  • Since I heard this song for the very first time I got a feeling inside that I simply cannot explain. Everytime I listen to this song I get that same feeling inside over and over again!!

    Great song!!

  • high quality audio

this is a song of it's times

  • tribute to the junkies

  • Every junky is like a setting sun,An anti drug song from his Heart,To play it at this Gig took some thought and shows that he DOES care,God bless you Neil.

  • Neil, a great Canadian. Enjoy, the rest of the world.

  • 00:02

  • Im going to see his concert on friday!

  • I've seen Neil Young. Best concert in my life.

  • Awesome song! Has a great message. 5 stars!

  • : ) :) : )

  • Neil is a genius .. he maybe could sing this a little better in a more quiet way but I guess he wants to hear. The Massey Hall concerts are great and Neil has a cool humor and the new release at Canterbury House shows him doing early stuff and buffalo springfield in great form.

  • Please don't criticize the best singer/songwriter of all time...hes beyond criticism!

  • why did u decide to blabber about nothing?

  • This is one of his better performances on youtube. I also like the Massey Hall stuff, Old Man especially.

  • what a crowed!

good old neil was surprised too, i bet.

  • I bet you like the X Factor.

  • I lost my best friend in January 1995 to a coke overdose 6 months after he was my best man in my wedding. This song really hits close to home with me. No matter what I did, I could not make my best friend stop... I dedicate this song to my best friend RIP. I only wish that he could have lived to see my wife and me and our 2 children grow old.

    Joe you are missed terribly.

    PS Addiction sucks...

  • a legend and the sideburns reminded me of planet of the apes, bue a genius.

  • tous ces commentaires anglophones ont l'air de bien casser; certes je ne comprends pas la totalité des paroles, mais la musicalité est super, il maîtrise grave.

Ce mec est un génie, ch'suis fan, deffinitivement !

  • yes, i think so. he was very nervous

  • I bet Niel was nervous here.

  • so, im going to this place called hot time. wanna watch?

  • Yeah I hear ya. I lost my virginity while the Harvest album played, over, and over, and over, lol. 1974, how sweet it was. Sex couldn't kill you. You could fill your gas tank up on three bucks, buy a bottle of Weidekher for 97 cents. Oh yeah.

  • is it just me or does he lood like Nick Cave or visa versa?

  • No, and it is vice versa. Latin, pronounced vere see ver say. Peace on,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

  • The damage done...it has done damage to many friends, lost to many friends to the needle..like Neil says like every junkie likes the setting sun, gone!!!! But a few of us have made it.

  • yes we have

  • R.I.P to all that had that prob this song is deep

  • He seems more comfortable in a small audience, either that or his guitar isn't loud enough

  • oh its all to deep man, do macdonalds do delieries!!!

  • New thread.

Curious...I never really figured out what Neil means by "Every junkie's like a setting sun". I've always liked the image and tried not to read too much into it but I sill, I wondered what thers think about that one...

  • I always read it as the junky way always headed down like a setting sun...and their life went the same...from a productive person to silence...

  • layne stayley RIP

  • Makes me w0nder about Scott Weiland. Will he come through finally? Or throw it all away...

  • fuckin right...

  • Cant wait to see him on the 29th june! would have been amazing to hear him in his prime. This is a great song. One of his most poetic. on his live CD he talks about when he first left canada and got to see alot of great musicans, but so many talented people being taken by heroin. That was his main influence in writing this song, but as with every song, its only what you make it about and how you connect with it. thats The beauity of music, and all art.

  • Moses -- I was 13 years old when this song came out, and it WAS amazing to see him in his prime. That era was like music overload my friend. Everyday you heard a new song or entire album that just blew you away. All you could say was just "pass the pipe" -- haha. Rock on.

  • agree.......me too...i learned to play this song in 1973 at summer camp in NC..........the 1970's were great...too bad kids now missed that beautiful time.......

    rock on...AND PASS THE PIPE!

  • i know....i wish id been born 30 years or so earlier lol

  • Exactly! Man I'm going to see him on the 29th too, can't wait!

  • rock werchter? :) ik ga ook zien ! :o :)

  • moses , really? heroine is the influence behind this song? wow,. we didnt know that,. you stupid tool
