Those who are watching this wondering how it is possible when he has such a weak plant (initially). A good saying is if you get punched, punch back; meaning, if you have a weak plant and the pole pushes your arms back, you must push back like Steve does in this video. But more importantly, look how perfect his trail leg is. Also notice how fast he swings it through, which carries all the momentum from his run into the vertical extension. Do these things and you can vault high as well. :)
@shotgunboy2007 I'm sorry but no, a free take off is when you jump off of the ground before your pole hits the back of the box. Bubka was famous for this. A "straight-pole" drill is when the pole has no bend in it.
@Perezn03 I'm pretty sure this is correct. Steps counts the total number of steps taken, and STRIDES counts the total number of steps taken by the foot the vaulter/jumper takes off of.
@shotgunboy2007 well, its not correct. Your completely wrong. Ask any advanced, elite, or high level athlete or coach. Like i said thats a four step approach. In pole vaulting, steps are counted by the athletes non dominant step cycle.

I talked to Brian Mondschein and he emailed Alex Parnov ( Steves coach) and he said on this jump he is holding 15'8" on a 5 meter 12.9 so yes it is that big of a pole. Freakin Ridiculous huh! Another thing ... Alex Parnov said another impressive jump is Paul Burgess jumping 5.30m from 6 steps ( 3 lefts) only gripping 14'10" !! ! ! Freakin Impressive.

Who did you hear the pole size from for this run? I have seen Derek Miles jump 17'8" from this run last year on a 5 meter 15.1 and he is 6'3" 190 lbs. .. Id say Steve is on a 5 meter 14.4 to 15.0 range . And Tim!!! What 5 meters come on brother did you jump that after one session then scoot back>> ? HAHA You could jump over 20 Dude
was that a four step? cause when the vid started he was at a stopped position then he ran. if it was then you sir are a pole vault legend. 18 feet from a 4 step. =O
insane big fella! cant wait to jump against you at nationals, well lets be realistic, ill jump before you actually start, hehe! well done my pb off eight is only 5m!

@FlyingV144 It's not a free take off. A free take off is when you're pole doesn't have any bend in it.

No, correct terminology IS an 8-step approach...4 Lefts. Each foot strike, whether left or right, IS a step.

I Heard the 5.10 12.8 second hand from Denis Kholev on PVpower. Don't know if it is really true or not.

Hooker uses a bigger pole from 4 lefts than most of of the elite 5.80 + guys use from 9 or 10 lefts. I heard it was a 5.1 12.8. This guy is good--
