Jack Layton too advantage if a good situation, good for you...if it was up to prime minister Harper, Canada would be a mess just like the United States which means a huge military, no healthcare and tons of gun violence ...Go Jack layton !!!
The Americans should be so lucky if we could influence them a bit, they are a f***** up nation. They need national healthcare, they need major crime reduction, they need to stop polluting the planet, America is beyond repair now... too many lobbyists in Washington
Kyoto and the environment are important, but trying to embed these things into a trade agreement is simply ridiculous. The US isn't adopting Kyoto any time soon. Does that mean Canada stops trading with them? Good luck to the Canadian economy!
While we're at it, let's amend NAFTA to ensure that the likes of Exxon Mobil doesn't try to sue the Canadian Federal Gov't, simply because they believe having to spend 2% of their profits on Research and Development is 'a violation of NAFTA'. Give me a break! In addition to better labour and environmental provisions, we need to strengthen the right to put clauses protecting agreement such as the Kyoto Protocol and the Atlantic Accord!
The lack of belief in free trade in some of the comments is astonishing. Exxon will be forced by the free market to invest in R&D because otherwise they are outcompeted, it's not the place for Canadian lawmakers to interfere. Labor provisions? Like higher minimum wage? If you took economics you'd know it actually causes unemployment, especially in a place like Mexico. Are you saying we shouldn't trade with countries that can't afford to have our standards of living?
The NAFTA issue did affect it, and Hillary flat out lied. The Democratic party in Canada have been defending Obama, asking for the Prime Minister who is conservative to fire the person who spread the rumors. Don't you people know that the Clinton and Bush's are friends?? Come on!
I havent heard about this once in the States. A forign govrnment may have effectavly subverted US election process and THE US news dont consider that news. And cnn wonders why people would rather get their news from the internet.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
How has the Canadian government subverted a US election if Americans haven't even heard about about it? If you don't hear about it, it can't possibly affect your decision come primary time can it?
what are you talking about? have not heard of it? have you watched CNN in the past 2 weeks? its not the point if it has affected it or not! the point is Canadian Politicians have no right sticking their nose in an American election. The same as Americans do not get involved in our elections.
The comment was in response to an American commenter who said she had no idea what this issue was about then promptly agreed with the majority opinion on this thread, so please understand the context. But to answer you, the point for Americans is that Obama was caught doing something indiscreet, and most Americans appreciate the opportunity to make a choice based on more facts available. It doesn't matter whether it was the Canadians, or Mexicans, or Egyptians who leaked.
Maybe leaks are immoral to you, but the fact is this is politics. Canada does and always will influence other countries. What about when liberals released statements showing disappointment with American policy right before the 2004 election? The NDP can sit back and criticize, but if they were in power, I truly doubt they wouldn't influence foreign countries to further their ends. What about all the clamor to influence China (which is booming and has a leader with high approval ratings).
I dont agree with any canadian politcians no matter which party they represent, if the decide to use their power to influece other democracies, and by now you know that the story was to begin with not true at all. The point is,
I feel we should just agree to disagree here. You are against any foreign intervention, while I say foreign intervention in pursuit of national interests is justifiable, and in any case expected of all governments that can get away with it, and that Canadian influence on other countries, overt or covert, in some form or other, is unavoidable. Fundamental disagreement, neither of us is likely to persuade the other. So have a good day sir, and we'll see how Canadians vote come next election.
If your answer is America is a democracy and China is not, in a democracy leaders should be held accountable for their words, and shouldn't make rhetoric that they know they won't follow up on (Obama). So in a way aren't we furthering American democracy? If influencing China to further Chinese democracy is justified, what's the big deal about this little leak?
I am ashamed to be a Canadian. Harper has been swift-boating his competition for over a year now. He is so jealous of anyone who is popular. He endorses Bush and falls all over him. The Canadian people just want to be rid of this Harper government. He has the morals of a snake.
No reason to be ashamed. After all, your system has the ability for the opposing party to confront the PM. Here in the US, Democrats simply follow Bush's orders, or are considered "traitors" by the Republicans.
Not only I live in Toronto Canada, I live in Jack Layton's disctrict(Toronto-Danforth). He is one strong leader who has been completely underrated because of overpowering of GOP loving Conservatives. That sneak Stephan Harper is probably having close door deal with Republicans as we speak and trying to spread the rumour, since he is no stranger to scandals and Lobbyists all across Canada.
Jack Layton keeps his word, how many Politicians you know ride his bike to work? That's what this man does!
@thetaoofken mature, or honest...seriously, who the fuck wants a socialist. our taxes are cunt stupid already. I want less tax, I'm sick & tired of this shit. they're fucking killing me.
@kidkappa04 The NDP is not killing you! Speding 36 billion on a solesourced military contract for jets, is killing you!
Eliminating a huge portion of government tax revenue by giving corporate tax breaks to corporations, with the assumption these corporations will trickle down these savings to their employees, and the consumer, leaving us with a huge deficit which is payed for with HST & the myriad of tax on fuel, no tax cuts for us, while our employers find ways to pay us less, is killing you.
The NDP would bankrupt us in a matter of years, worse than anything Harper has done the past years.
You should know that it's you and I the consumer that pay the corporate income taxes, not the corporations. They just pass along the cost to the consumer. Want to get back at the corporations, ask for a sole consumption tax on goods and eliminate all income taxes. If people are forced to pay more for goods, they'll stop spending, giving the corporations less.
@kidkappa04 Oh ya, a little increase in tax for citizens, and a big increase for corporations that funds a myriad of social services for all Canadians. That's a terrible trade-off. While Harper puts our country even further into deficit with his retarded spending that doesn't help anyone except corporations. I love how people speak on topics they know nothing about.
@kidkappa04 guess what, that means that harper is pro amreican and doesn't give a fuck about you!!! wake up and see some realities you canuk hick!!! Read a book!!!
Well then listen to agenteayana because she knows the Canada system. That is where she lives... and has said the house majority is ruled by Conservatives. AgenteAyana has also said that Jack Layton is a good and honest man.
Is the continuous yelling while the two gentlemen are speaking normal? If so, why? I like the English and Canandian practice of the head of government being available for questioning. I don't know much about Layton, but I like him from this video.
Yes, heckling and shouting by backbenchers during question period is a common occurence. The idea is to distract the speaker and make him trip up. IMHO, the parliamentary system is far preferable to the presidential system in the US where the President can hide behind his speechwriters and carefully choreographed photo ops. An inarticulate buffoon like Bush could never have become the Prime Minister of Canada or the UK.
Oh ya the yelling is normal. I get confused when i watch the president address congress and the only choices are variations on clapping and not clapping. What is the deal with that? honestly i don't get it

Um, I beg to differ over who has the intellect of a 5 year old. That person would be you shit-for-brains.

BTW, gay "right" are not needed. They have the same rights as straight people. They can marry anyone as long as they are of the opposite sex.

Free Trade was partly Brian Mulroney's idea in the first place. And Ronald Reagon's.
I never did like NAFTA.

While we're at it, let's amend NAFTA to ensure that the likes of Exxon Mobil doesn't try to sue the Canadian Federal Gov't, simply because they believe having to spend 2% of their profits on Research and Development is 'a violation of NAFTA'. Give me a break! In addition to better labour and environmental provisions, we need to strengthen the right to put clauses protecting agreement such as the Kyoto Protocol and the Atlantic Accord!
jwlnler 3 years ago
The lack of belief in free trade in some of the comments is astonishing. Exxon will be forced by the free market to invest in R&D because otherwise they are outcompeted, it's not the place for Canadian lawmakers to interfere. Labor provisions? Like higher minimum wage? If you took economics you'd know it actually causes unemployment, especially in a place like Mexico. Are you saying we shouldn't trade with countries that can't afford to have our standards of living?

You are truly a Democratic leader.
cbman739 3 years ago
The NAFTA issue did affect it, and Hillary flat out lied. The Democratic party in Canada have been defending Obama, asking for the Prime Minister who is conservative to fire the person who spread the rumors. Don't you people know that the Clinton and Bush's are friends?? Come on!

I havent heard about this once in the States. A forign govrnment may have effectavly subverted US election process and THE US news dont consider that news. And cnn wonders why people would rather get their news from the internet.

How has the Canadian government subverted a US election if Americans haven't even heard about about it? If you don't hear about it, it can't possibly affect your decision come primary time can it?
sirhumphrey01 3 years ago
what are you talking about? have not heard of it? have you watched CNN in the past 2 weeks? its not the point if it has affected it or not! the point is Canadian Politicians have no right sticking their nose in an American election. The same as Americans do not get involved in our elections.
yaboydw 3 years ago
The comment was in response to an American commenter who said she had no idea what this issue was about then promptly agreed with the majority opinion on this thread, so please understand the context. But to answer you, the point for Americans is that Obama was caught doing something indiscreet, and most Americans appreciate the opportunity to make a choice based on more facts available. It doesn't matter whether it was the Canadians, or Mexicans, or Egyptians who leaked.
sirhumphrey01 3 years ago
Maybe leaks are immoral to you, but the fact is this is politics. Canada does and always will influence other countries. What about when liberals released statements showing disappointment with American policy right before the 2004 election? The NDP can sit back and criticize, but if they were in power, I truly doubt they wouldn't influence foreign countries to further their ends. What about all the clamor to influence China (which is booming and has a leader with high approval ratings).
sirhumphrey01 3 years ago
I dont agree with any canadian politcians no matter which party they represent, if the decide to use their power to influece other democracies, and by now you know that the story was to begin with not true at all. The point is,
yaboydw 3 years ago
the story was used as a partisan move by the conservatives during a crucial primary (ohio) where NAFTA has cost many their jobs.
yaboydw 3 years ago
I feel we should just agree to disagree here. You are against any foreign intervention, while I say foreign intervention in pursuit of national interests is justifiable, and in any case expected of all governments that can get away with it, and that Canadian influence on other countries, overt or covert, in some form or other, is unavoidable. Fundamental disagreement, neither of us is likely to persuade the other. So have a good day sir, and we'll see how Canadians vote come next election.
sirhumphrey01 3 years ago
If your answer is America is a democracy and China is not, in a democracy leaders should be held accountable for their words, and shouldn't make rhetoric that they know they won't follow up on (Obama). So in a way aren't we furthering American democracy? If influencing China to further Chinese democracy is justified, what's the big deal about this little leak?

I am ashamed to be a Canadian. Harper has been swift-boating his competition for over a year now. He is so jealous of anyone who is popular. He endorses Bush and falls all over him. The Canadian people just want to be rid of this Harper government. He has the morals of a snake.
weebit22 3 years ago 17

That's what this man does!

kidkappa04 1 year ago
@kidkappa04 The NDP is not killing you! Speding 36 billion on a solesourced military contract for jets, is killing you!
Eliminating a huge portion of government tax revenue by giving corporate tax breaks to corporations, with the assumption these corporations will trickle down these savings to their employees, and the consumer, leaving us with a huge deficit which is payed for with HST & the myriad of tax on fuel, no tax cuts for us, while our employers find ways to pay us less, is killing you.
mattmatt115 9 months ago 4
@mattmatt115
TheRationalOptimist 5 months ago
@kidkappa04 Oh ya, a little increase in tax for citizens, and a big increase for corporations that funds a myriad of social services for all Canadians. That's a terrible trade-off. While Harper puts our country even further into deficit with his retarded spending that doesn't help anyone except corporations. I love how people speak on topics they know nothing about.

Is the continuous yelling while the two gentlemen are speaking normal? If so, why? I like the English and Canandian practice of the head of government being available for questioning. I don't know much about Layton, but I like him from this video.
cledus3110 3 years ago 6
Yes, heckling and shouting by backbenchers during question period is a common occurence. The idea is to distract the speaker and make him trip up. IMHO, the parliamentary system is far preferable to the presidential system in the US where the President can hide behind his speechwriters and carefully choreographed photo ops. An inarticulate buffoon like Bush could never have become the Prime Minister of Canada or the UK.
mathguy77 3 years ago 8
I do like how the gead of government facing questioning on a regular basis. Bush never would survive it.
