Yanks are nice people... but cetain traits differ to Brits.
In shops Americans are more likely to say "have a fantastic day" to the shop assistant after being served.. a Brit would just say "cheers" or "thanks"
okay...when i was in London (im American) i really tried to NOT act like a stereotypical American...although it didnt work cuz i still got things yelled at me and shit. i was called a Wanker once. On the London Eye the kids i was traveling with were being so loud and shit and we were laughing a lot, same with the train...we got stared at like we were aliens from another planet. London is a beautiful city though. :)
@TheMegMegs95 Americans should really look elsewhere other than London when visiting UK, Londoners are generally unfriendly, aloof and not as outgoing as other areas in the UK.
@rockandstroll@TheMegMegs95 I think that's a bit unfair - I used to think so too, many years ago (I'm a Londoner) but compared to most cities, I think we can hold our heads up high, as we have a pretty inclusive and tolerant view of others, and we're surprisingly polite. Sounds like our friend here was just a bit unlucky. You don't live in London, do you @rockandstroll?
@knaan163 I'm not saying all Londoners are like this, but everytime I've been down, and I have visited London quite a lot, and travelled alot, they just seem miserable compared to others, on the tube train no one even so much as makes eye contact, friendly Hellos or chit chat seem to be least common in London I find.
@rockandstroll hmm fair enough, I suppose - we can seem pretty grumpy, especially in the winter. come down in the summer, or when it snows, and people will seem much friendlier
@rockandstroll Well London is a very busy city and on the tube it can be awkward when your having to look straight ahead at other people just in case you laugh or smile at a random moment and you have to remember there are lots of tourists and foreigners here which also make up a large part of the population so not everyone is local but most people in London would help or would be happy to help you out or give you information if you needed it or stopped them on the street.
. . . I'll add that when Americans invite you to their home, the vast majority are not being sincere - if you actually turned up they'd be very surprised and maybe even annoyed.
Just to make small talk they say many things which they don't really mean.
American commenters can try to convince me otherwise!
I grew up in Killarney in Ireland where we had a B&B and we actually got very chatty American customers like that. Americans like this do exist! At least they used to in the 70s and 80s!
i like visiting america because people are more outgoing and friendly and more likely to strike up a convo with strangers, in london people are generally cold, rude and stick to themselves plus its fairly easy to have sex with an american girl because being "british" they see us as some kind of novelty.
@slothgoonies American girls love a bit of British pork. I have been there several times, they are all over you like a cheap suit. The only things I dont like is how fake they are when they are after a tip "I am so stoked to be serving you coffee today sir" and how you get pestered in all the shops when you are just having a look.... Again, all over you like a cheap suit. They also refused to serve me any more beer in one pub I went in, because 3 beers in an hour is "drinking too fast" ???
@shaolinfingajab Yes indeed the americans are a fucked-up bunch, but it's a hell of a country to visit for some fun! Big burgers & steaks, cheap women, sunny weather (in parts) and you can go fire an ak-47 and other guns in places.
@slothgoonies The food is good, definately. You can see why they think ours is shit, and why alot of them are fat.... That and having to drive everywhere lol
utter brilliance! The mannerisms are to a tee. I've a Gt/ Aunt who moved from UK to USA approx 45yrs ago and has lived in Idaho for upwards of 40yrs. My Aunt loks and acts like this woman and her father in law is Harry's character to a tee. I'VE GOT TO VIEW IT AGAIN IMMEDIATELY LOL
That's about the way Americans act, except down here in the South, where I'm from, one of the first questions they will ask you is what church do you go to and state that you should come to their church. However, if you compare people from say, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, etc. to the people in the northeast and Canada, you will find that we, as a whole, are much friendlier and polite.
@notkeenonthis you + all the other people who liked your comment saying they had the exact same experience means you are all gay with boyfriends and an american couple shouted out OH YOU ARE GAY!?!? on the bus is that true?
these are the nicest people ever!
