@Jasaxos The only thing I can suggest is checking the settings in your TV for any kind of audio/video sync settings. If there is a sync setting, turn it off. This basically delays the audio to match the video which takes longer to process. Also, make sure the PS3 is set to 2 channel audio and the composite cable is the main output. That helps on some setups.
Great video man. I saw this when I was trying to correct my horrible audio lag and it helped a bit. I don't have any external receiver to hook up to and the audio lag, even with composite audio, was absolutely unplayable. I was about to give up, but I ended up ghetto rigging up a set of RCA female-to-female adapters out of spare parts and went directly from the PS3 RCA out to a set of 2.1 Klipsch Promedia and the lag vanished. I still use HDMI for video, but it sounds great and plays perfectly.
@airmanowens I'm glad it helped a little. Based on what I've seen elsewhere, my setup has minimal lag even with HDMI, so I guess I'm lucky. I've heard of several people using the same solution as you.
I use the multiple audio out setting on the PS3, but I hear that sometimes introduces more lag. The best setup would be setting the PS3 to the composite out as the only audio out and only 2 channels. I haven't tried that.
@TouringBubble I did try the multiple audio out thing but my TV auto-selected the HDMI audio so that didn't help. (I have a cheap TV lol!) Everything I've read says that my TV's audio processing is to blame (processing that I can't turn off.. again, cheap TV), so I just ended up with the RCA audio going straight to my computer speakers. These babies sound pretty darn good though, and I've been playing my fingers to the bone since. Thanks again for the informative video!
Use rca cables. That has the least amount of lag. Also make sure settings on system are for your tv. 720p,1080i ect... Best tip is make sure you use some type of sound system it helps when you cant hear your guitar unplugged at the same time.
I would really appreciate if in a later video you could actually show us the cables themselves. I'm not very good with such things and I'd love to have some sort of visual reference so that I can know what to buy.
@MegaJaja111 Analog out would be the standard RCA cables that came with the system. The red/white/yellow cable. These carry only a left and right audio signal that is not digital, which means it doesn't have to be decoded in the receiver. This reduces lag.
You can also set the PS3 to export only 2 channel stereo from the system, which can help. But if you use a digital connection, like HDMI or Optical (TosLink) it will still need to be decoded.
omg this is pissing me off. im about to order it and now im finding out that they dont suggest using only hdmi. well GUESS WHAT, all i have is hdmi for video and sound. im NOT going to buy external speakers/home theater system that has the audio (red/white) inputs and separate the sound from the video. I want 1 cable. am i going to have severe latency issues with just using an HDMI cable? they're going to lose sales over this issue. im so disappointed.
@yesifailed It really comes down to your setup. Delay on my television isn't terrible, and the game is playable. But, the delay is there. Having the television set on "game" mode helps a lot of people. I don't have mine on game mode, but I do have the extra processing functions like smoothing and such disabled. Game mode does pretty much the same thing.
@yesifailed Yeah the game devs pretty much admit that with ANY setup, there will be at least 30ms of lag. However, with a good setup, you will NOT notice 30 milliseconds. Keep in mind, this game is the first of it's kind, and if you want to enjoy it to it's fullest extent, there may be extra costs associated with it (decent guitar, nice speakers, extra cables/adapters). I can say from personal experience and the pain in my fingertips while typing this that it's DEFINITELY worth it! =)
so your saying optical will be ok? i have to use a gaming headset , and it only connects through an optical input. i havnt bought the game because i was afraid i wouldnt have a good experence because of the lag issues.
@hermanbong1 I initially played with Optical only and it was playable. There was a slight echo effect that was noticeable when playing really tight rhythms, but was only minimally noticeable when playing songs. On the amp menu it is noticeable as there is an evident delay between plucking a string and hearing the note from the speakers.
@hermanbong1 Optical will NOT be ok. Maybe if you've never played out of a real amp before but it's just enough to drive you crazy. You have to set the lag and pluck notes out of rhythm which is ridiculous. If you try to play to the song by ear then you will be behind and it sounds like garbage. I've tried optical, HDMI, RCA and all of them have lag. I don't think it's possible to get the lag out it's just who can live with it. But it's not "playable" to me with optical, it's super annoying.
@jmyler I feel ya man. I was working on it for hours and I finally figured out it was the audio processing on my TV.. even on regular composite. I don't have an option on my (cheap) tv, so I had to make some RCA fem-to-fem adapters and go from the composite out on the PS3 to the 3.5mm on a set of Klipsch Promedia.. and now.. it sounds AWESOME and plays with zero lag.. seriously zero. And I've played out of some expensive amps so I know what you mean.
@airmanowens I'm jealous. i really wanted to love the game but i couldn't get the lag out to my satisfaction. I had it going straight into my receiver so it couldn't have been my TV. Maybe my receiver was doing some sort of processing i don't know about.
@jmyler That's what I would guess man. This may be a stupid question, but did you try a different input on your receiver? ..Like maybe a CD input or something? Some audio ports on nicer receivers do have processing on some channels for those stupid home theater effects. Also, did you set your console to only output on the composite audio? Forgive me if you've already tried those..
@jmyler It's pretty common for most surround systems to implement some kind of effect (theater, hall, etc) which would produce a little delay. Might wanna see if yours is set that way...
@iruyle I sold the game out of frustration. I tried just about every setting that i could, and even heard that some inputs have effects and some do not. I tore my whole system apart trying to get this thing to work to no avail.
@jmyler Sorry to hear that man. Some people have more lag than others. Hate to say it, but it's kind of expected with games like this ... it will never be like an amp. But you'd think most people could get close.
@hermanbong1 It depends on your setup and how the audio processing works. Some setups have little lag and some have lots. I've even noticed variances in the amount of lag at different times on the same setup. I've experienced the normally low lag RCA setup increase in latency and I've tried HDMI with only slightly more latency than RCA. Your best option will always be to use a 2-channel analog output.
what i do is i plug my guitar to my amp, plug the game to the line out of the amp, turn down the guitar volume on the game all the way and there, i have 0 lag. only shitty thing is that you're not going to get the different sounds from the game.
@lpalmeidabh Yes. It all has to do with video processing. If you use the same source for video and audio there will be a delay as the video is processed. The same goes for digital audio that also requires processing. Separating the audio and keeping it in analog form gives the lowest latency.
I plan to try a different channel on the receiver that does not have associated video switching to see if it gets rid of the tiny amount of lag that remains.
Also, the more peripherals in line with the video/audio, the more latency is introduced. So, if you, for instance, go from the PS3/XBox through a video switch to the TV then to the receiver, you're going to have a lot more lag.
Yeah, I've been playin guitar for 43 years and this lag sucks big time. It feels like I've never played before. It's VERY fustrating. WTF...??

Is that the bassline to The Thing opening scene?

@plateofshrimp It's an E5 hit over and over. If that's what the opening to The Thing is, then I guess it could be.
