  • @steamriceroll Lizzy said No not at all

  • 7:61 What did she say ? I am not British, English is my 3rd language.

  • Argh! I want to kick Lady Catherine in the mouth! *sigh* But this rendering, however, does great justice to Ms. Austen's work. Her characters are so colorful and genuine.

  • if Lady Catherine's and Elizabeth's scene happened here in the Philippines, and the rich one has greatly insulted the rich one, the poor neighborhood would probably stir and rush to give that lady a damn. it's really degrading to know the fact that you are poor and even have it to say in your face. the rich and poor have equal rights, and the rich have not the least right to do that kind of stupid manners to anyone.

  • What is Lady Catherine saying at 1:19? "But your arts and...." What?

  • @mikkijeanee08 "But your arts and allurements"

  • @Pukekura35 Thank you for taking the time to answer. :-)

  • What I still can't understand is how did Lady Catherine find out about Mr.Darcy's proposal to Elizabeth... I supose that Mr.Colins told her but how did he knew???

  • Rich and poor is a relative condition. Someone Middle Class is considered rich by someone in poverty. The US govtt considered 70,000+ a year as rich. You miss my point - if these were 2 MIDDLE CLASS PEOPLE today, the confrontation probably would have been a screaming using the "F" word. I can even see the police being summoned. Rich or poor does not make you civilized, character does - and I still contend this confrontation today would have become violent. We are animals in comparison.

  • I do love how Lizzie handled it. She didn't take it lying down, but she didn't lose her cool.

  • God!! Jennifer Ehle is so wonderful!

  • Lizzie is particularly beautiful here.I like Jennifer's face,it's so unconventionally pretty!

  • "Just wait in the carriage dear. I'll be right back."

  • We are considered far more civilized, but note the conversation - a very heated argument that did not resort to profanity or violence. Imagine today a rich person going into a poor neighborhood/ghetto and confronting a girl presuming to marry into her family. Not only would the conversation be rife with 12 letter words beginning with M, but the rich person would probably be shot and her carriage stolen. And the poor person would not be prosecuted because she was "provoked". We be civilized.

  • @joelweymouthtais That's as may be, but Lizzie is not poor. The gap between her and Lady C. is much smaller than in your example. The Bennets are not filthy rich, but their relatively reduced circumstances are mainly due to mismanagement. Mr Bennet actually has about 2,000 a year, in an economy where Bingley is filthy rich at 5,000/yr and Darcy is OMGWTFBBQ RICH!!! at 10,000/yr.

  • when Lady heard that Lizzie was not engaged to her nephew that was the biggest sigh of relief she gave lol

  • When I'll want to know something I will say: "TELL ME SO AT ONCE........."

  • those hairstyles are god awful

  • I don't understand- who told Lady C that Lizzy and Darcy were engaged? Mr. Collins? Why would he think such a thing?

  • @harrietcow ... Mr Darcy told Lady Catherine, but she wouldn't say that he had told her... She wasn't happy about it at all... hee hee, serves her right.... I love P&P, brilliant book and this adaptation is my favourite one ... Best regards from Wales .. :0)X

  • @harrietcow yeah. Sir William and his family tought they will soon be engaged because of Bingley and Jane. So Sir William wrote this to (probably) Mr. Collins(because Charlotte would't have told it to anyone). Then Mr. Collins told it to Lady C......... Stupid Collins...

  • Makes my mother in law look reasonable

  • you're not going to be missish had to look that one up Thanks Jane neat word

  • haha "i am MOST seriously displeased!" - i gotta use that line someday.

  • My Favorite Version is BBC 1995's!!

  • Honestly, this actress was perfect for the role of Elizabeth Bennet. This may be the only movie/film/series that actually really comprehended what the characters were about and casted them accordingly. Well done! This was an absolute delight to watch.

  • Who the fuck asked for your opinion!??

  • Ewww..De Bourgh's Face... >_>

  • I feel so sorry for Lady Catherine's daughter Ann... she's so silent and beaten down by her mother. Kind of reminds me of a wet ragdoll.

  • @cricketsong4045

Anne de Bourgh was actually the first zombie to show up in Hunsford.

  • my FAVORITE part of the book! <3 <3 <3

  • I think Mr. Bennet is very unsensitive here to poor lizzy so sad.

  • "are you engaged to my nephew?!?" "I am not." "and will you promise to not enter into any such engagement??!" "I will make no such promises" yessss she's finally seen the light!-/3

  • Lol lustful longing looks abound!

  • the actress playing Lady Catherine does a wonderful job. As the scene progresses she increasingly turns into a smelly old wimpering lapdog. It's really difficult to be both imperious and defeated.

  • LIZ TAKE HER WALKING CANE AND HIT THE OLD HAGG WITH IT...

  • Lady Catherine's visit is almost a comic interval!

  • 11 people got scream at the face by Lady Catherine

  • Please tell me the name of the song that comes in at 5 minutes

  • i love lady catherine <3

  • @littlelostnell You have the right. My favorite was the actress of the Sir Lawrence Olivier version. That aunt worked with her nephew because she loved him and wanted the best for him. She liked Lizzie because Lizzie was as independent as she was. Too bad this version didn't play the aunt like that. This aunt was totally selfish and used to getting her way. Imagine marrying that sick, (not going to spell it correctly) hypocondiac girl. If Darcy had been forced to marry her how sad a life.

  • @Songsmirth This version didn't play the aunt that way because she never existed in Austen's story. This miniseries got the aunt right.

  • @Songsmirth That old version was terrible and didn't keep to the book at all. The portrayal of Lady Catherine in this mini series is right on with the book.

  • Jane Austen's power of language makes me awe-inspired. I can only hope to write as well as she did.

  • LIZZIE MY DEAR PLZ: SET HER FEATHER HAT ON FIRE WITH YOUR BRIGHTEN EYES...

  • 1) I HATE 8 PEOPLE AND I DON'T KNOW WHO THEY ARE BUT I KNOW THEIR FINGERS WILL FOR SURE FALL OFF FOR DISLIKING MY FAVORITE MOVIE. LOL 2)EVERY TIME I SEE THIS PART I WANT TO SLAP THAT UGLY FACE OFF THIS UGLY BUG-EYED HAG...MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS WITCH!!!

  • @talidina2 Why are you telling? And why shouldn't people have the right to their own opinions? Do you think that everyone in the world should like this? Are we so boring? We are different for a reason and you mocking people who don't agree with you is arrogent. My opinion. . .

  • She's freakin' ashamed of a "obstinate, headstrong" girl? Girl, you would not survive a second in this century!

  • "Mr Darcy, who never looks at a woman except to see a blemish"

    lol

  • What Lizzie says to Lady Catherine is that age's equivalent to the phrase "f*** you". I love Lizzie in that scene. xD

  • I was taught to respect your elders but when it comes to Lady Catherine, I dont care how old she is, I would have knocked the old bitch out.

  • @jadisa1992 I also was raised in the same way but I will get you a bat! lolol Songs

  • Family is family! Note that when Darcy looks like he's going to marry Mr. Collin's cousin, he writes Mr Bennett to warn him that Lady Catherine, Collin's esteemed patroness, opposes the wedding. If Lizzie goes up in the world, so does all the members of her family.

  • wow i greatly dislike lady catherine debourgh (?)

    she's a great actor haha

  • Mrs Bennet is the height of all kindness and sweetness compared to Lady Catherine!!

  • @Andiefunny93 LOL what a terrible thought! lol.

  • Their "show sown" was just GREAT!!

  • Have you no respect for my nephew at all?

Marrying him would lead to his downfall.

I will not listen to a word you say,

I am in charge, and will have my own way.

We'll soon see about that, for I'm not used to failure,

And I will succeed in changing your behavior.

  • And I know that Lydia’s marriage was a sham

Your family will never be respected like I am.

Getting rid of me would not make Darcy love your daughter

Your arguments are weak and don't hold any water.

Now that you’ve insulted me in every possible way

What more can you have to say?

You're a rude and selfish person

Who would disgrace Mr. Darcy with your lack of good fortune.

  • I am not as rich as you, but we are still equal

And my marrying Mr. Darcy would not be illegal.

How dare you try to come between something that's been planned since their birth,

They will be together before I am gone from this Earth

Your family’s much too low in society,

Your presence would disgrace the prestigious Pemberley.

  • I wrote a poem about this:

I'm certain that you already know

My reasons for coming- it was not to say hello.

I heard this rumor (though I know it can't be true) That Mr. Darcy is engaged to you! Is that so? – No, he’s not engaged to me.

Promise me, I command you, that he never will be! I won’t promise you that. Stop trying to scare

And don’t meddle with my personal affair.

  • And we have some "objections" against you, Lady Catherine de Burgh! We refuse to oblige you! So make haste and leave Lizzie and all of us alone!!!

  • at 3:52 it seemed to me like lady catherine was holding a wand and her magic word "not so hasty if you please" was really gonna make lizzy stop frm going away lol too much harry potter i guess..

  • Lizzy dissed her badddd lol.

  • Lady Cathrine de Berg is a bitch.

    Nuff said.

  • all the kudos to elizabeth for still being so polite to such a bitch as lady catherine! i would have punched lady catherine in the ovaries

  • you know, when lady Catherine was chasing after Lizzy, i really hoped she would trip...

  • i was thinking about what i would do if i were in lizzys situation with lady catherine, and then i started thinking of how other austen characters would have handled the situation and i thought of marianne from sense and sensibility in this ituation and i started laughing because she would really tell that woman off...maybe she would even refuse to see her and throw her out :) i love marianne

  • i love how lizzy is so forward and that she is blunt. i want 2 be like her.

  • i love how quick at repartee lizzy is in the conversation with that old witch. and, btw, irony of fate that in the end lady catherine's intervention made darcy hope again and renew his adresses successfully. she owned herself :p

and mr. bennet is unbeatable with his amusement about mr. collins' letter xD

  • well, i can see where mr. collins gets his talkativeness.

he must have picked it up from lady catherine.

  • that old hag says Lizzie is selfish but ins't it her own selfish wish for her daughter and Mr. Darcey to marry instead of Lizzie??srsly!what the heck that old thing should get down !i think she sits on a horse way too high for herself!! >:(

  • sadly, this scene with lizzie and lady catherine, still happens today...

  • Lady Katherine is a HORRID woman! who the hell cares about a girl's family's background if the couple in question are in love!?!!

  • Absolutely classic-the dialogue btwn Lizzy and that arrogant aristocrat, Lady Catherine...

  • Absolutely classic-the dialogue btwn Lizzy and that arrogant aristocrat, Lady Catherine

  • Fie! Fie! Yes, you lot would of really have fitted into Regency Merton society. Shocking hearing some of the comments, totally Shocking.

I am most displeased, expected more refined comments than the ones below. Won't do you know.

I take my leave of you.

    Good day.

    I said Good day!

  • jennifer is so beautiful

  • so simple to say kiss my donkey you old fart

  • gawd, i dont think i could stand having a mother like Lady Catherine....

  • Lady Catherine--"And will you promise me never to enter into such an engagement?"

    Lizzy--"HELL NO, BITCH!"

  • lawlz 2:01

  • I almost want Lady Catherine to fall down the steps when she goes after Elizabeth. Lol

  • DANG... That old crackpot is totally nuts... Liz had some serious strength and self-control to put up with it so respectfully until she left! Actually, the way she mostly just put up with it was kind of annoying, I'd've liked her to bite back..

  • omg lady catherine is such a pain in the ass!!!!!!!!!

  • DIE YOU OLD COW ~

WHO CARES FOR YOUR COMPLIMENTS ~

I WOULD BE ASHAMED AND WOULD HAVE SLAPPED HER, REPETITIOUSLY ~

  • Mr. and Mrs. Bennet's are hilarious! They are typical modern day parents meddling into their grown-up children business and having no ANY clue on what is going on!

  • "well well what do we live for but to make sport for our neighbors.. and laugh at them in our turn." -well done Jane Austen. Wonderful

  • I LOVE U "IPLUSO" FOR UPLOADING THIS WONDERFUL SERIE, I NEVER THOUGHT ID SEE IT AGAIN, THANK YOU VERY VERY VERY MUCH ^_^

  • Lady Catherine is despicable. But let's give credit where it's due. The actress is astoundingly effective. And, of course, nothing more need be added to Miss Ehle's accolades.

  • Who started the rumour about Liz marrying Darcy heard by Lady Catherine? I haven't read the book.

  • @Sage80

it's not explained in the book neither

but my guess it's Mr Collins xD

The Lucas are not blind and Charlotte suspected that Darcy admired Lizzy since her visit in April.

  • "I am ALMOST his nearest relations"

    lol what??

  • that's so weird..darcy was to marry his first cousin. eww

  • @screamscream12345 very common in those days. The Brittish royals did it all the time.

  • If I was Lizzy I think I'd want to slap Lady Catherine! What a rude, arrogant, stuck up, old woman!

  • 7:35 SUCH A PIERCING STARE THAT GIVES CHILLS UP MY SPINE! PACKED WITH DETERMINATION!

  • "Their engagement is of a peculiar kind..." omg, if they were really engaged you wouldnt be there in the first place, lady! Seriously! If someone like that came along and told me not to marry a guy, I would never have been anywhere near as polite as Elizabeth was!

  • I like this better:

Lizzy: Lady Catherine, Get out of my bushes, you are excessively annoying.

Lady C: I will not. You must confess what black magic spell u have used against my poor nephew, Mr Darcy.

Lizzy: I will not no such think Lady C. We are inlove, that is the spell that u cannot live with.

Lady C: In love? You and my nephew? Motherfuucker! How dare u. How dare u pollute my family with your Mrs Bennet genes. Over my dead body,

Lizzy: Jumps on Lady C, and bites her on the neck!

  • @Basra2020 funny, but i like it as it is, i dont think i have ever seen such violence without any1 taking a swing at the other person. but they really pulled it off here. the unstoppable force meets the immovable object! tickets: fifty dollars.

  • If you think Jennifer Ehle played Lizzie better in this pivotal scene "thumbs up" this, if you think Keira Knightley was better "thumbs down" this.

  • @quidwitch Maybe you mean the script Jennifer had was better than Keira's. I find their acting VERY similar, and even their voices sound the same. XD

  • @Qu33nii I agree that they're both kinda similar, obviously they couldn't get as much detail into the film but I think they're both quite good. I don't see why people complain about one or the other!

  • @quidwitch you shouldn't compare the two VERY different actresses from two different movies.

  • @quidwitch

    I like both scenes

  • @quidwitch But I think it does not all depend on Jenniger Ehle here, but also on Barbara Leigh-Hunt. She's doing a great job as Lady Catherine.

  • Go away Catherine! there in love you buffoon! shut up.

  • @potterlove ``They are'' not ``there''.

  • @n080di lol sorry, how can I make that mistake? It really bothers me when I see people confuse theirs/theres/they're's ...but I was watching this video like until 2 am lol was half asleep

  • Knowing me and how bad I get when I am angry, I would have turned to the lady while she sat in her carriage, cut her off when she said 'I most displeased." and said 'Good, I wasn't trying to impress you, you old hag, now get the hell off my property!' It doesn't matter what time I was brought up in.

  • "mr darcy, who probably, never look at you before.."

    oo, mr bennet dont know..

  • How incredibly rude of Lady Catherine to simply barge into a household without invitation and criticise everything! Just shut up, you pompous, arrogant cow!

  • 'Miss Bennet, do you know who I am?'

A rude, crabby old witch intent on spreading misery?

  • Barbara Leigh Hunt plays Lady Catherine so brilliantly! She makes everyone in the world hate her character, such a great acting!

  • @homeichan agreed, she still seems like a real person (a horrible one) not a stock figure.

  • "are the shades of pemberley to be thus polluted?"...genius!

  • Many people give a big HOOT about what a person like Lady Catherine wants and thinks. Money and status / hierarchy were still the the way this world was organized.

  • I have to say that Barbara Leigh Hunt is quite brilliant in this scene.Judi Dench's Lady Katherine paled by comparison.Brilliant acting, well done!!

  • Argh, Lady Catherine is the must hateable character in the whole literary world!

  • I like this lady Catherine but i gotta say my fav was Judy Dench she was a bitch XD

  • dont you just love period drama xx

  • Are the shades of Pemperly to be thus polluted?

  • I hope Lady Catherine De Bourgh dies as fast as possible. I know it's rude, but still, haha. She is even more annoying than Mrs Bennet!

  • I love Katherine. Inspirational!

  • Darcy - Elizabeth *TENSION*

Mr. Bingley - *blah blah blah*

  • Poor Anne...I think having a mother like Lady Catherine would be just as bad as having a mother like Mrs. Bennet.

  • @ithungers No wonder shes so sickly.

  • that Catherine lady needs to trip, fall, roll over and catch on fire!

  • @ 4:28 I really wish that Lady Catherine had tripped and fallen on her face. That would have made for a most wonderful scene.

  • @xmindframesafetyx hahahahaah well that would have been hilarious to watch indeed! ^

  • @xmindframesafetyx I couldn't help but laugh at this comment! haha that would have been hilarious!

  • @musicismylife17blue She did appear that she ALMOST fell, so that makes up for my a small amount of my disappointment. Although, she probably would have died from the fall. Maybe just the sheer embarrassment and impropriety of doing so would have struck her dead.

  • if i were lizzie, i could have raked the flesh of that old hag

  • arts and allurements LMAO!

  • i would rip and slice that woman for eternity!!! Bitch is the only thing i can call her!

    Rotten vulture!

  • '...What do we live for? But to make sport for our neighbors...and laugh at them in our turn.'

    That doesn't sound quite right.

  • dang. i. love. this dialogue. feisty. colourful. nearly theatrical. and lady catherine. may i say. is such a bitch.

  • What fascinates me about this scene is its historic and literal accuracy.

    It's like a time machine.

    Brilliant acting by both performers.

  • jennifer looks too old for elizabeth. sorry my english

  • oh man, no one does he smoldering stare like Mr. Darcy

  • oh yes 7:40

  • It doesn't matter how many times I've seen this. I always cheer out loud when Lizzie tells Lady Catherine where to stuff it!

  • they should have let him marry who ever he chooses

  • Lizzy rules with this conversation! Go Lizzy!

  • i love how lizzie skirted around the question about darcy proposing to her. hahah good girl!

  • I am most seriously displeased....

  • The Bennetts are loyal to each other, and the girls take seriously the Commandment, "Thou shallt honour thy father and mother." Mrs. Bennett is loyal to her daughter's husbands too. I am sure she will become the number one fan of Darcy once he has married Lizzy. Is this not the way families should be--loving and supporting each other withoout question? And shouldn't children be loyal and respectful towards their parents? Of course they should!

  • @mc0558

    Even if its Wickham?

  • She probably knew that there are some battles worth fighting, and some that aren't.

  • gosh de Bourgh is so creepy.......

  • lol at 3:52 it seems like lady catherine is pointing a wand at E saying "not so hasty if you please!" as if she's gonna make her stop frm going!

  • Anne is so sickly

  • @christinazeffi

My guess is laudenam or belladonna.

  • This is all kind of commedia dell'arte aesthetics, I think, though in a modern way. Fits good to the novell.

  • So, were all agreed we like Lady Catherine then? LOOL!

  • Nasty old cow.

  • I wish they'd show Lady C-D when she gets the news that Lizzie and Darcy are engaged! Selfish pig.

  • aww i love @ 6:49 when she pretends to laugh and then goes back to being sad <3 she loooveeeeeees him so cuteeee lol im like 5.

  • "I am most seriously displeased."

Like who really gives a hoot, you crabby, arrogant old lady!!!!!

  • Quite ill favoured.

  • muddy much?? I love Bingley! He's so cheerful :)

  • One thing is for sure...Dame Judi Dench did a MUCH BETTER Lady Catherine!

  • @obedub that is what i just told my mum the i scrolled down and saw what you wrote and i really loled hehehe :D

  • @obedub i completely agree.
