  • truly beautiful solo and guitar tone

  • Great sound, great feeling... I also like playing jazz on my Strato... Congrats, man !

  • slowed down a bit but still crazy that you can do this

  • Very good

  • Trés bon niveau, super vocabulaire pour l'impro! Good job!

  • yeah realy good melodic lines

  • Great solo. I love Coltrane and you did a fantastic job soloing over those complex chord changes. Great smooth one from that strat too. Where abouts are you bro?

  • The flow got so much interesting after 1:00 minute. Nicely done! Also after 1:30.

  • hey man, you rock!! :-)

  • :) Skromnosc domena wielkich.

    Pozdrawiam

  • Hej Lukasz! Odsluchalem chyba wszystkie wersje tego dziela na YT...Ty sobie fajnie te melodyjki ukladzasz.Jak dotad 1 miejsce.Pozdrawiam i gratuluje zapalu :)

  • @PogoSlaw Dzięki :)

Muszę kiedyś nagrać nową wersję, taką w oryginalnym tempie ;) ta jest baaardzo stara.

  • umai

  • Great solo and tone man, what gauge are using? Very hard tune to solo over.

  • @Juki128 thx, 10-52

  • @LucasZembrzuski it sounds great, ur a great player. I'm inspired

  • nice use of triplets, really nice, they really go with the swing beat nice man

  • Lovely job! Nice to see and hear a strat for jazz. Just shows once again the versatility of that guitar. What amp are you using?

  • totally agree, aewsome:)

  • Better then most

  • I get really miffed when anyone playing Giant Steps or Count Down or 26-2 or anything that doesn't sound like Eric Clapton gets accused of being 'academic' or a 'widdler'. I think it's a combination of Vanity, jealously and a clear in-superiority complex. People should be allowed to play technical music without having the moron brigade jumping on their backs.

  • @nockle In the same respect, we of the "moron brigade" should be able to play our simple, yet soulful, music without they intellectual elitists jumping on our backs. What do you say to a truce? Oh, and the word you were looking for was "inferiority", unless you were being ironic.

  • @theonlybyrone I wasnt jumping on your back

  • @nockle Not directly, you weren't. I was just trying to point out that just because someone prefers any one style of music/playing over another, that does not qualify them as a moron. It was my way of suggesting that you might be generalizing a bit much. No harm, no foul. Just a healthy exchange of ideas. Cheers.

  • Fluid, melodic, speaks to listener without showing off. Relaxed and meaningful.

  • Great melodic sense and feel. I really dug this!

  • this is nice! i very much enjoyed this solo

  • THX :)

  • Hey what scales were you using to solo there?

  • do y9ou have the guitar tabs to this music ?

  • Beautiful!

  • I gotta play a version of giant steps at school and I was wondering if you could tell me your amp settings. The tone is

wonderful. Im assuming your using a fender amp

  • I dont have any amp, i use POD2. This is one of my own presets :)

  • up in the middle

  • you should have no worries regarding your playing....

  • Great groove. Exceptional job.

  • You never really outline the matrix. You just rephrase the melody every time and wait for the 2-5's in the second part of the song to come around so that you can actually play over them.

  • I know, i do it better now, this video is old, but just listen to the Coltrane's original version, He repeats himself too. This is not a reason for me to do it too, but sometimes you loose just a little focus and have to back to the track and this helps.

  • It's not about repeating yourself, there's certainly nothing wrong with that. All I was saying was that what makes this song hard is outlining the Coltrane Matrix (the first 8 bars) which you don't do at any point in this video.

  • word, you really gotta surf these changes like a wave, stay ahead of the crest!

  • okay just by saying there are only 2 ways to play this tune defeats the purpose of jazz and improvisation.

  • i disagree, i think you just wanna hear 1-2-3-5 chord arpeggios for those bars like everyone else plays. This solo definitely had some soul. you sir sound like you're an academic jazz player.

  • I'm not an academic jazz player just because I know my theory. And I never said he wasn't playing with soul. All I was saying was that he never outlines the actual matrix part of the song, which is true, and that the hard part of the song is the matrix, not the 2-5's at the end, which is also true. If you think that I'm getting on him for not using the same pattern that Coltrane used in his original solo then your way off.

  • This is awesome. Great feel, playing, and tone.

Do you mind if I ask where to acquire this backing track?

    Thanks and great work!

  • awesome job! Nicely executed and fabulous tone.

    BRAVO

  • Very nice, lovly tone

  • Very nice! Sounds a bit like Kurt Rosenwinkel...

  • I just 'favorite'-d this. great job. I take it that you are self taught and play by ear. I can only aspire to your understanding and interpretation of such complex and beautiful music. Thank you! Keep posting!!!

  • usa compressor?

  • Of course! :)

  • Lovely! You we'll be hearing about in the future.

  • This song produces a unique feeling in me, the tone of your guitar makes me feel the breeze coming off the sea, weird! But wonderful. Blissful, well done.

  • that was pretty good! very telecaster sound on your strat! as the other guy asked, did you use a lot of pentatonic scales to improvise?

  • I dont know, I have no musical theory, i play from head, smth like i was singing to myself :)

  • really? thats pretty impressive man, good job. how long have you been playing for?

  • what amp or guitar settings are you using to get that jazz tone out of your strat?

  • I really dont remember what setting was that, I just know that i used compressor and single speaker emulation, dont remember what amp emulation that was.

  • great playing, bravo

  • nice playing man, abviously playing the changes ,can you share any thoughts on these changes,i cant get away from sounding chopy and rootbound on this tune,i like your relaxed sound, also i notice three fingers on the fretboard are these mostly pentatonic scales your useing.thanks

  • Excellent!

  • Wow! Great playing man!! And that's not an easy tune..

  • great job on a difficult changes from all positions, bravo, go get an L5!

  • Dang, it's tough to solo over those chords AND make it sound good, but you rocked it!

  • nice one. Very hard song to improvise on. sounds great

  • Nice work, man... I loved the solo in the end of the tune.

  • absolutly beautiful dude... total respect

  • Very melodic - as well as playing the changes - great.

  • great

  • Nice! Very nice...

  • i really love your style. Are u professionnal?

  • If you mean do I earn any money by playing music, than no, I just play for fun in my home.

  • you are really good. Continue

It gives me a lot of pleasure

  • i know nothing about jazz, but this is brilliant haha really good

  • Great job. Well done, man. Nice phrasing and great tone.

  • Sqiuer stratocaster, 10-52,line6 pod 2.0.

  • if it wernt for gta iv i wouldnt know this song existed [jazz nation radio]

  • LMAO. Its on that station??

  • very smooth... right on man!

  • That was interesting listening. You really have an individual voice on the instrument. Your phrasing is varied too, not too much of the 8th note runs which most people do.

Great stuff! I'd love to hear you solo over rhythm changes or some Bird tunes!

  • Awesome. Now do it at 290.

  • Soon (^_^) (i hope ;) )

  • on a strat... interesting....

  • Sounds nice doesn't it? Though I normally don't like strats.

  • I actually like your tone alot.

I have heard some really unoriginal sounding jazz guitarists, but you've got your sound down pat. Good stuff.

  • amazing job... i realize how hard this is and this song is. Giant Steps is definately not a II V I, the guy who said that is wrong, this song is not modal, and this song takes many hard years of practice to learn, some people still are never able to play it. great job again man

  • uhh this song is a bunch of II V's. Just really fast. Thats what makes it hard. If You Slowed it down the key changes aren't that hard.

  • This sounded so, so great. Other than the head of the piece, were all the solos improvised?

  • All solos on my chanell are improvised.

  • your guitar is very nice sound

    and your play is great.

  • Very nice

  • i dont understand how to solo over this song, if someone could explain i would be soo happy, i understand some jazz theory but what scales woiuld one use on this song?

  • Its way easier than you think- The song is just ii V I's... If you know how to play over a ii V I in one key, its not to hard to get used to moving between three.

  • besides the II v's, one thing that is common to do is playing 1,2,3,5 or some combination of that over the B D7 G Bb7 Eb section and also over the G Bb7 Eb F#7 B section. Ie) over B- the 1,2,3,5 is B C# D# F#. it's coming from a major pentatonic sound. it can really help one get around those quick changes. helped me anyway.

  • great tone

  • fine arts here!

love it. this pushes me to work my scales

    thanks

  • the way you ended the song is my favorite part

  • fucking good! I haven't other words to describe your playing! AWESOME PLAYING AND SONG ;)

  • sounds quite nice, but i guess even the slower version is a bit above your skills. pay attention to the timing of your phrases. in an overall good setting these tumblin moments made me really switch off the video...

  • trane1717..this is very fine playing and a great version..your negative comments just shows your jealousy..you obviously know nothing about music or guitar playing and want to pretend that you do.

People like you ruin the comment section on youtube and hopefully one day they won't allow garbage remarks like yours.

  • i have put 5 stars cause it's such a hard tune and his impro is medolic, fluid.

    great job dude.

  • holy shit this song is incredible... there is just so many key changes you like cannot hear a center anywhere it just keeps going everywhere all over the place. great playing btw

  • nice!

  • Long live Jamey Aebersold!

  • nic nowego nie powiem jeśli powiem ze to REWELACJA!

  • that was the sickest improv i've heard on this song and certainly by far the coolest tone. My only recommendation is to explore the lower register more when you improvise. and also, you stayed strictly inside the chord changes. I think you should be a little more "far out" sometimes. just here and there land on some sharp 13's or throw in some crazy leading tones ya know? man you are a BEAST

  • dude, the changes go by so quick, you have to stick to chord tones or it would sound like shit.

  • You must mean flat 13 cause a sharp 13 would be a flat 7. if your going to give consultations, you should use correct nomenclature.

  • dont mean to offend you samgreenf, but what i think of "improvisation" is everything is permisible own everybody's own taste.,that's why it's called "improvisation"..you don't really have to stick to the chords sometimes you gotta break d rules to make life easier..thanks.. ;) i think what the guy above did is pretty cool.,didn't fully dig in my taste though pretty cool..keep on jazzin' brothas... ;)

  • yeah i really regret leaving that comment now because i realize that if i can't do better than him then i have no right to be giving criticism haha. my bad dude. i think your music is phenomenal keep it up

  • Solid. I Really like your style on this. Very good phrasing and choice of notes thru-out. Every time I listen to this I like it even more, and the strat sounds great. Fine job.

  • good stuff. are you going through any kind of effects or pedals? That strat sounds great.

  • thanks this is the stuff I been looking for I found the tabs Im wanting to learn this style for guitar coltrane is the best sounds like holdsworth ;-0 hmmm??? good job man!

  • nice!

  • This is definitely the best version of this song I've heard on this site (besides the original). Keep up the good work.

  • very musical! I don't know how you do this!

  • amazing guitarrist

  • Wow, you are truly an old school master. Good luck with your music, I may have to ignore theory and just play a little more often.

  • Fantastic version, great playing..

  • Wow, truly amazing. Is your ear's development a natural gift for you or have you done extensive ear training?

  • What do you mean by ear training? I just played some guitar stuff for 10 years, first some very easy things like Mettalica, then some Satriani, Vai, then more jazz like Pat Metheny, Scofield, and now i play Tribal Tech, trying some Holdsworth and Coltrane, that's my ear training (^_^)

  • really like this version, you are an amzingly smooth and melodic player. Were you using the Realbook charts for this and what theory did you use in the solo? Were you using arpeggios, modal theory, or just straight up chord scale relations? Once again great job.

  • I dont know any theory, I just have well evolved hearing, it's like i was singing, but on a guitar, I think that improvising that way is the most natural way of playing instrument possible.

  • seriously, this is not my best performance, im trying to plat giant steps in original tempo now, and now in this "slower" version i dont have to use so many "well known" licks, i just love this song (^_^)

  • this is true. And you played well on this. Great ears. But if you studied the changes a bit more you wouldnt be guessing on some of those notes (You're phrasing is suffering in some spots because you you are unsure for a second) But overall great playing

  • I absolutely totally agree""""

  • Beautiful playing!

  • really nice dude

  • very nice clean playing...bravo

  • That's fantastic jazz tone with a strat. What strings did you use and what gauge?

  • I use standard daddario 10-46, this is squier stratocaster, with humbucker, and sound is mainly from line6 guitarport, (now pod2.0)

  • anyway I have fun with this on synth using a Yamaha VL plugin board with breath controller. I don't care too much for the sax sound I get, but it's got a pretty nice round hollow woody sounding clarinet. Anyway, if you really understand the structure of the song, the changes are great to blow through, you can go nonstop with the ideas, was a great vehicle for Coltrane, naturally.

  • my fave standard too, at least for "blowin"

well I used to play a horn but not enough time to practice it these days...to keep the lip in shape (trumpet) you need several hours daily...
