  • How old are these students and how much time do they have to prepare their speeches? Thanks

  • THis is a fucking joke. How is this debate? Everything is completely warrantless. THis is absolute trash. I dare any of you to try LD or POLICY debate

  • what's the etiquette w/ accepting objections? are they obliged to address any, or can they shut down their opponents voice?

  • i think what the opp failed to say was that the prop polic wouldnt actually work.

how are you going to measure every ounce of carbon that people use everyday?

if ur going to put the same tax on everyone. this would be unfair to people who don't use their cars as much as others.

  • But parliamentary is the international style of debate. but the good side is we do need a piece less aggressive style, policy is useless. People throwing facts at a situation as fast as they can isn't truly useful. Which is what policy is. LD on the other hand is the most useful for competition because it couples persuasive speaking with a fact based system.

  • im pretty sure its british parlaimentary system of debate. PM, OP, DPM, DOP for five minutes each.

then a second set of teams for five minutes each.

  • No, it's National style, done in Canada specfically for the Canadian championships.

While Americans believe that "their style" of debate is better, the showing on the worlds stage begs to differ. Canada regularly breaks top 6 whereas Team USA...never breaks.

National style allows for a lot of personal style, if you look at Tim Abdullah and Iqbal Kassam they are great examples.

  • GOOD point. Iqbal Kassam has his own, calm style. I can tell you that just 2 weeks ago, at BC Provincials, IN THE FINALS, WHICH WERE IMPROMPTU, he had NOTHING written down. How did he win? Staying cool, not getting to angry, yet remaining passionate.

  • @shervin6758 I wanna see a video of it. See how he does it and still wins. Do you have it or do you know if anybody have it?

  • what format are they using in this debate? it seems like their having a back anf forth banter??? rebutals @ 5mins in? :|

  • anthropocentric buffoon

  • How old are these debaters? I'm guessing they are juniors, am I right? Were they in grade nine or ten when they did this?

  • and the most important thing is that these kids would get harassed if they went into to a policy debate round.

whereas this would be extremely easy for a policy debater to walk in to and succeed.

hqve you guys ever seen american policy debate?

  • elfifle,

these students are students, not a political analysts or sociological debater, they are a student. Prop has brought a good argument and a very good persuasive LEGIT paper. This argument, and if you are litsening to it, is suggesting that the Carbon Tax be a polict in the Canadian Economic sector. It doesn't matter how old you are, if you have facts that are true and that obliterate opposition, you will win, and it will be a policy if the judges account for the implementations thoughts

  • this type of debate is too easy. it isnt even close to the structure of american policy debate.

plus policy debate is much more aggressive, and more like a full fleged argument then this, it also allows debaters to step out of the realm of traditional policy making and allows us to critique any aspect of debate.. this is just 4 high school kids role playing as canadian politicians, and there isnt room for individuality like in policy debate in this

  • HELLO! It is is CANADIAN debate. The united states policy acts have nothing to do with this argument, they are arguing about Carbon Tax!!!

  • She stated that Canada solves world problems without arms, well that's not really true. Last I looked Canada was in Afghanistan.

  • she is really smart..

  • Actually Canadian Debate is made of win. American debate is sooo stupid. It is a debate of models, not actual ideals. There is a reason why Canadian wins at worlds, and Nor Ams, Pan Ams, Europeans, and spawn the best debaters the worlds has seen. American debate sucks.

  • I agree with Skyus' comment. Internationally, Canadian debaters are actually able to function on the level expected in other countries. Saying that a style is "gay" really isn't a good way to criticize them, particularly ironic considering we're discussing a debate video. Making arguments for the sake of arguments is pointless and degrades debate. Arguments are only worth making if central to the debate. Hence, there are rarely more than 3-4 points that should ever be raised by a side.

  • You are correct. Elrifle, who said you have to have more than one argument to STATE your FACTS are TRUE. Elrifle, you are saying that these deabtes are gay, and your assanine idiotic statement about these students asking questions, is completely outragests. You are going to say that when the moderator returns the stand to opp, they can conclude their thoughts, however, debates are to DEBATE. Suggesting your factual information is the same thing as if your doing somewhere else if have the sa
