One of my favorite pieces on the show, ever. Beautiful, intricate, and challenging, even to the amazing dancers involved. Not to mention the entire back story with period costume and a woman stuck in an abusive relationship, unable to even move on her own except for a brief period of feminine camaraderie, only to be drawn back in. Loved it.
@elji02 Interesting to know that you've met grandmas who wear pantless one-piece bodysuits, white face-paint with tribal garb, ceremonial horned masks, handmade lungs across their chests, short skirts with black striped leggings and red panties, and cocktail dresses. You know some pretty awesome grandmas.
Looks like devils surrounding an innocent girl. Considering the drumming sound is "hotter than hell" and the way she holds her ears when the blond girl reaches towards her. I've taken from Dee and he would never choreograph something without meaning.
not sure the choreographer really understood the song..... that only bothers me since that song is one of my favorites. it was technically nice, though.
i think it's a nice dance but i feel like it has nothing to do with the lyrics, especially when they're dancing to a song that has such interpretive lyrics...
this piece is amazing. im not exactly sure what the meaning is.. i see the relationship bt ade and kathryn and i see allison oftten trying to come bt them. hmm quite interesting. anways i think it one of my favorite group contemporary routines i have ever seen on the show. I wish it was repeated in the finale. Dee Caspary is an awesome new addition to the show!
Wow, this is brilliant. I can see the whole 1800's interracial part that you are talking about @musicmama888 but I also see a relationship between Allison and Kathryn in this piece. Almost as if it is a love triangle dealing with being interracial on one side and homosexual on the other. It's almost as if he is connecting between the 1800's and today by what relationship are accepted in society. Then again, I could be completely wrong. Thoughts?
i see it as an interracial relationship in the 1800s, when that was absolutely not allowed. all the other people are trying to keep it from happening but they can't stay apart
I love this group routine. It is so fresh. I don't see how it shows Courtney up? But, it does show Dee's weird mind. I thought they were all great, not just Kathryn and Allison. or Ade.
My thoughts are that it is about a woman who wants a man so badly... she tries but can't get away from it the passion a/r him. the eternal drum gets louder and louder. she tries to stay away(white) but is caught in an internal mess. she wants to be pure but cannot resistance...her head is going crazy..she is trying to kick out the devil/passion but can't... in the end the man reaches out for her but she can't stop the thoughts of the devil (red)
okay so the girl in white, is attracted to ade much to the dismay of everyone else, and he is keeping her from them. and the costumes are like modern victorian styled costumes, representing a time when your life was in the hands of others (like a man asking your father to marry you, or arranged marriages). so they want to be together much to the dismay of their families and society...this is what i get from this and i can't really put it in words. I LOVE YOU DEE CASPERY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Does anyone know what this routine means? Whenever I hear Drumming Song, I think of intense sexual desire and lust. She wants him badly. But I don't know how the dance translates into that. Did the girl in white (Kathyrn?) symbolize a virgin in the old days? The other girls are sexually active or something and are trying to corrupt her? Then that means the guys have to protect the purity of the girl in white.
Love this Florence song and have been running my own choreography for it in my mind for past year or so--soooo glad it was featured on this show to wonderful routine! I have tix to see Florence in Boston in Oct--sooo excited
I hate the new stage, it makes it hard to see the dancing. Dee's choreo looks a lot like Sonja's choreo. I love that song but I'm not sorry I quit watching this show last season after 5 straight summers of addiction.
Does anyone have an interpretation for this dance number? It almost looks like the male dancers are trying to keep Katherine (in white) away from the other female dancers. They keep reaching for her and the guys keep blocking them or pulling her away. The period costumes and river lyrics section of the dance make the whole thing feel like an old church baptism or something. Any ideas?
@MissyAnnOH I kinda get that--it would make sense. I feel like this sort of performance would be better if they were just slathered in mud. Haha. The skirts get in my way.
It's amazing how Lauren is full-out dancing and ever so professionally picks up and throws away a scarf that fell of the ground at 00:38. This is such a good number!!
They didn't use this song as well as I had hoped they would have. Maybe it's the costuming, or maybe I don't understand the story they are telling...but I always imagine this song is like, primal, human, raw love.
@larrieking. I think that this dance IS very raw, human, and uninhibited matching the music perfectly. I totally hear the primal aspect in the music too but i think it's brilliant that he picked this kind of costuming from a time of rigid society and juxtapose it with the freedom in the choreo. This is a hot mess.
Florence <3 We love she ! :)
