I don;t even know how to start really. Like you said in Catching Fire you're thinking "yes district 13 exists it can help they can overcome the capitol make things right with the world!" and then...in Mockingjay you feel lost. District 13 is using Katniss the same way the capital was. for her looks, her fight, shes not a leader shes a pawn...and really is there any better way to get freedom to the people but you just can't help but get a bitter taste in your mouth.
I've got two problems : the fact that gale has been fighting for katniss all this time and then all if a sudden just gets up and walks away and the second how all this has been for prims survival and she just dies. It drives me crazy but I think that is what makes such an awesome book!
Really good review! We need more reviews like this: calm and honest with no sarcasm or jumpy editing.
Mockingjay was actually my favourite of the series for the same reasons you felt unsure about it. Collins was really trying to convey how things like war changes you forever, you'll never be the same, you'll continue to wake up screaming. I thought it was so powerfully done. It didn't make me happy, but it did move me.

It was like in the end Katniss was forever a piece in everyone's game. I think I disliked Coin more than Snow. He was right, planned all along and when Coin suggested another Hunger games I couldn't believe it. Just showed she just wanted to replace Snow and carry on, she was absolutely no better.
I LOVE THE HUNGER GAMES !!!! i think mockingjay is my fav. book because is the only book that i have read in my entire life that doesn't have a very happy ending that's why i love it
i love tghe hunger games i was so sad that prim and rue died but it was amazing!!!!!!!!!!! also i LOVE peeta and im happy with ending except fot the deaths
I thought the ending of Mocking Jay was anti-climatic.
I was really hoping for a big duel between katniss and Snow but it didn't happen :/ Or at least a big fight between katniss and president coin -sigh- But i have to say that i was happy when peeta and katniss got together at the end XD!
@eastsideboy10114 it was very heartbreaking. now that they are making the movies i hope they give us a lil more of a happy ending then how we were left feeling at the end of the book.
@eastsideboy10114 and you are so right there is really no happy ending. I hope when they do the movies they add a little more info like in harry potter when snape got to say a little more before he died it wasn't much but it was just a lil more then the book. that would make me happy
dude you're review is exactly how i feel!!!! awesome! i've just finished reading the book yesterday and I have a bag of mixed feelings.
I just dont understand why Suzanne Collins introduced new characters and gave them a personality, (Boggs, Homes, etc) and then just killed them. Prim's death was just thrown in there for good measure, i think. It wasn't necessary really she just wanted to keep the book dark like you said she dangled hope and plucked it back
@17LilSouljah I think that her goal was to realistically portray war, which is to say that people don't usually get heroic deaths and a lot of the time deaths are random. This isn't really what I'm used to in literature which is why it threw me for a loop but after thinking about it, I understand why the book turned out the way that it did. Not to say that I'm happy that so many characters died or left without any resolution :(
I felt like this book was driven on revenge and darkness and there was no real justice or goodness in it. I liked the book a lot though but it was just dark.
ok so im not gunna lie but ive never ever in my entire life, cried so much about a death, even in real life, more than i did wen rue died in the hunger games nd i cudnt be more devistated wen innocent little prim died! so freakin depressing!!!
I haven't read Mockingjay yet, the first 2 are amazing and it took 3 weeks just for me to get my hands on a copy of Catching Fire. I read the summary on the Internet and I got to say it sounds sad but I don't care. I'm just sad that's it's the last book in the series
@PearceCTV You're right, but I did mention that point in the video. I was just noting the differences in tone from the end of Catching Fire to Mockingjay.
omg i totally agree with you.. so sad she went thought hell.. i never thought she would end up with gale.. it is a sad ending cuz she still has nightmares 20 years later... i want to know if the world knows that coin was a b*tch and kill prim and used katniss......?????
@BUFFYTHESLAYER007 Me too. I still wonder about how the everyone else reacted to Katniss killing president coin and what the state of their lives 20 years later.
I suppose she was trying to capture the reality of it. In real life this is probably how things would be, and how we would act. I think she also wanted to draw attention to the real negative effect of war, and how in the end were all just sick, evil people. Both Sides had their problems. I guess I am just let down, because I wanted more from the book. I was hoping for a more traditional outcome I guess. I wanted that yes moment, or realing warm fuzzy content in the end but got reality
@tommyknoker Yeah, I really missed that warm fuzzy feeling as well. I agree with your point about her trying to capture the reality of war, though I feel a more triumphant ending would have been more enjoyable. This book definitely takes a very cynical view of human nature.
I guess you made this a long time ago, but I only just discovered this series last week and burned through all three of them. Now that it's over Ive watched a lot of reviews on the books, and I thought you did a really good job. I really agree with your point of view.
I found myself throughout this book just waiting, and waiting.. Waiting for that shift that you become used to with the other books. Waiting for the happy moment, or the clarity. But its just sadness, and leaves you empty..
Simply put...the ending was not satisfying. Like you said, IT WAS DEPRESSING! Some moments dragged and when the climax hits, the story continues with more drawn out scenes. I would've liked to read about how Peeta and Katniss became close. How long it took, the moment when they both knew that they could love each other. NONE OF THAT WAS SAID! It was just stated like facts with no details. Peeta owns. The stuff he said to Katniss was deserved.
I feel the same. Mixed, confused, I'm not sure I really did like this book. I was sobbing at Finnick's death. He finally has Annie, the ONE happy part of the book and then he's just killed! Someone ruined Prim's death for me (they spoiled it in a comment) but that didn't make it any easier to digest. And Gale... Peeta? I had no closure on them. I feel like this book was missing the wit the other two had. It wasn't funny... didn't make me think. Just sad. I wanted it to be over by the end.
This book was sooo sad. It seemed really rushed . It ended and i was waiting for more, like right after peeta gets better the books over. She didn't write enough about the deaths and I thought she should have, especially for Prim and Finnick, I loved him!, And i so agree with you about peeta, its almost easier if he just died instead of changing so much, but I'm glad he didn't .(:
I've just finished the book so i'm gonna pull myself together for this comment. I couldn't agree more with your review (which was great btw). The ending just left me wanting more, some of the characters which the books were centred around deserved a better ending - Gale?! even Haymitch! I was just waiting for Cinna to come back. If it wasn't for the epilogue i would be really unhappy. But on the bright side, she chose Peeta and I can't wait for the film! I just wish they'd hurry up!
@rimo993 I'm also really excited for the film. Hopefully, we'll get some casting news soon. Also, check out the fan made trailer for the Hunger Games on my channel. It wasn't made by me but I think it's pretty epic.
...One thing I think about more and more is how Peeta and Katniss both lost the one thing they feared losing the most. Katniss, her sister, and Peeta, his humanity or what made him who he was (remember that line in HG when he was afraid the games would change him?). It's kind of beautiful (In this bittersweet way) that they are able to grow and recover (to some extent) with each other... Hopefully I'm making sense
@faerietaleredux that makes perfect sense :) it was one of the things that made the book so tragic and is mostly why I say the ending isn't really "happy"
@eastsideboy10114 I only now figured out that there's a page on Youtube that shows when people "reply" to you. Anyway, that's why I just realized you'd continued our conversation. It's my pleasure to leave feedback. Are any more book reviews on the way, by chance? I might plus a great series for you if you haven't read it. The Queen's Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner is excellent (though book one takes some time to get going, once it does its awesome). Be wary of spoilers for those books tho
@faerietaleredux I would love to do more book reviews. I'm planning on reading Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card soon and I'll also check out the Queen's Thief series. If you have any more suggestions let me know, I'm always looking for great literature
When you first posted this I hadn't actually read the book yet--so I said I'd come back to finish the vid once I had. I really enjoyed your perspective.
You're right, no one was safe and that's what's so unsettling. The sheer amount of character's lost. My head's still reeling from it. And that's even though I'd done what I could to prepare myself for the despair.
The rebels won every battle, too easy. As if the capitol ever stood a chance. It would have been better if Katniss encountered Snow before the taking of the city. Her plan works and they've got him locked in his "oval office" or something. Until The rebels arrive.
I found the whole book very depressing and dark. To be honest though, the death of Prim and Finnick didnt bother me to much as I never felt an emotional connection to either character. I'm glad Peeta and Katniss got to together in the end however I don't like the way or reasons why they got together in the end. I felt it was a little rushed, I missed Prim's death altogether and had to double back a few pages.
A book has never hit me so powerfully, and I found the writing to be beautiful. I would still recommend this book and this series to any book lover, but I think this book could have been better if the author had taken some time to let things breathe. I'd give it like a 4/5. Sorry about the huge rant.
It was almost like Suzanne Collins didn't want to write a book that was any longer than 400 pages, and she really squeezed in a lot in the last 100 pages. I think had the final act alsted about another 50-100 pages, then I would've felt more involved in the characters and the battles, but it just seemed each page was nothing but a continuation with a few people left behind because they had died. I was depressed, and disappointed, and yet, I still loved this book.
I was really detached from the whole war, because Katniss had become so detached from the war as well. I felt like deaths just sort of happened, and the consequences of them were never really felt, until Prim's. Then, after her death, we are just told that the Capitol has fallen. This was a real problem for me, because I didn't feel any victory whatsoever, because I never felt a part of the war, because of the heavy detachment and the fact that Katniss was unconscious during the victory.
I sort of think that was the whole point- it didn't feel like a victory because really the rebels are no better than the capitol, so things are basically the same anyways.
The book started off a little slow, but I was interested and the revelations came slowly as the book was unfolding. In the second act, the pace was increased a lot, and I thought that the book had found a good ground for pacing. Then the third part came, and the pacing once again increased dramatically. I never really felt into the book anymore, I just felt like I was reading a synopsis of it.
I agree with you in a lot of ways. Peeta was my favourite character too, and I was shocked by how much he had changed and by how cold Katniss treated him as a result. You made a small note in your review about the pace of the book, and I actually found this to be the biggest problem.
I get that it was about war and supposed to be sad and all, but i was looking for a spectacular ending to a spectacular series, and I was dissappointed. First off, why does Finnick die? with no justice? getting his neck ripped out didn't really seem like a good ending for him. Same with Prim. And why did she die when The Hunger Games was started with the point to keep her alive? Also, Cinna should have lived. I like Gale and peeta the same, and I think Gale should have gotten a better ending.
I agree. I never favored Gale or Peeta. I loved them both. And I would have been okay with Katniss choosing either... but the way Gale was tossed aside angered me. He was one of the most important people to Katniss before the games, and in a page he's left behind. He never wanted to be a part of Prim's death! That wasn't his intention. I felt like she wasn't understanding. And even with Peeta and Katniss's ending, I wish she'd given more detail on that.
@fre2e2 Also his death was too matter of fact, there wasn't even really a moment where suzanne collins acknowledged his death. She just stated that he had his head ripped off and moved on
I think that you were pretty much dead on with your review. I was left a little confused about how I feel about the book. There was just so much to keep up with that I need to read it over again.
I really liked it actually. Depressing, totally depressing but I think Suzanne Collins was trying to show and give readers the feel of a realistic war. It's depressing, fast, unfair, there's a lot of loss, the line of who's good and who's evil blurs, and there is post trauma depression.
Katniss lost a lot, Petta got tortured, We saw a new side to Gale's personality, the people who were "good" meant well but some of them did horrible things, lives were lost. All this happens in a war.
I believe the ending gives hope. Peeta and Katniss will never forget what happens, but they move on. They have a family. They have each other. So that gives hope, but it's still so sad. :(
I so desperately wanted to love this book, but sadly I didn't. =(
Maybe my expectations were just too high but I felt there was something missing. Ok a LOT missing. There were not enough closures & Katniss annoyed me so much in this book. Even though the end was sort of happy I guess, I didn't felt happy. I felt depressed, lol! I was like, "That's it? Um ok? No. NOT OK! I don't know what to think..."
The 1st book is still my favorite & Mockingjay still was an awesome read.
I must say, I disliked the book which is super depressing because I loved the first two. I didn't like the pacing. It lagged like crazy at parts, and then lurched randomly, totally glossing over pivotal moments. Katniss was a tool for most of the book, and I was upset that Finnick and Prim were not given justice in their last scenes at all.
All in all, the end felt very deus ex machina to me.
Since I haven't read Mockingjay yet, I stopped watching when you warned you were going to start talking about potential spoliers. But what I did see of your review I found helpful and informative. I'm really apprehensive about reading book 3 after all the reviews that have mentioned the depressing feeling it leaves you with... I'm trying to adjust my expectations so I can take it for what it is. It's hard though.
yaa i thought it was amazing, but very different from the other ones too, and i also missed peeta! after i felt like kind of depressed and i couldn't stop thinkng about it, the death of finnick and PRIM! :( and peetas family and madge and everyone as well, it was crazy, but definatly entertaining. i like the ending, though it was still extremely sad feeling, with gale and everything else. i really like the epilogue, it gave me extreme chills. so ya i loved it, but gunna miss that its over
I don;t even know how to start really.

@TomPatCame

TomPatCame 1 year ago
@TomPatCame I thought the pace was mostly fine until the end when everything felt too rushed

Finnick was awesome. WHY MUST HE DIE???
fre2e2 1 year ago
@fre2e2 Also his death was too matter of fact, there wasn't even really a moment where suzanne collins acknowledged his death. She just stated that he had his head ripped off and moved on
eastsideboy10114 1 year ago
@eastsideboy10114 I know, man, you'd think Katniss would've given it at least a thought, like "I can't believe Finnick is dead"

MegaDTNG08 1 year ago
SO TRUE it was so sad.
Everything does go wrong.
I believe the ending gives hope. Peeta and Katniss will never forget what happens, but they move on. They have a family. They have each other. So that gives hope, but it's still so sad. :(
I loved the book, but god it was brutal!
It was fast paced, I couldn't stop reading!

Great review!

Great review! I agree a lot with what you say

Side point: Love the hat!

yaa i thought it was amazing, but very different from the other ones too, and i also missed peeta! after i felt like kind of depressed and i couldn't stop thinkng about it, the death of finnick and PRIM! :( and peetas family and madge and everyone as well, it was crazy, but definatly entertaining. i like the ending, though it was still extremely sad feeling, with gale and everything else. i really like the epilogue, it gave me extreme chills. so ya i loved it, but gunna miss that its over
hotties291613 1 year ago
I thought that it was amazing except:
We didn't get enought of Peeta, and when we did, he was crazy.
The ending didn't seem complete.
The deaths were too quick and it annoyed me how Katniss didn't really care about anyone's deaths except *Spoiler* Prim's.
And it really annoyed me how Haymitch just went back to being a drunk after all that happened.
I LOVED the epilogue. It was my favorite part in the ENTIRE series. Especially the very last sentence. It added so much meaning to the series.
