great question, and the answer is yes. i long ago shot the video for step by step, but it requires editing, because there are many extreme closeups of things like file transfers on pc, what you see on the phone screen while the install process takes place.
now that i know there is interest i will work to edit this series of videos then post them.
Here are the download locations for this whole series of NEWEST WING ROMS, from developer "Ivan" at XDA-developers:
Since links can't be posted within youtube posts, you of course know you need to reconstruct these links in your browser:
JustIvan -dot--c-om -- has the final version of "JUST STABLE", the 6.1 ROM series that was being developed during this video's making. But also there are now WM 6.5 versions too. REMOVE THE PARENTHESES BELOW around the dot.
I couldn't fit "SIMULATED GPS" into the Youtube title.
In 2007 Google rolled out Mobile Google Maps 2.0, which uses the positions of nearby cell phone towers to triangulate your location. They claim accurate to within 300 meters, and I'd say that's accurate.
The value here isn't for "turn by turn directions", but to help you figure out where you are on Google Maps -- for example you're trying to find a freeway entrance or offramp. Amazingly helpful.
haha i was just checking because i use Google Navigator 5.2 (i no $100) with a nice gps receiver (connects via bluetooth) which i bought off at gpsbuynow(.)com good deals there
Yeah but I feel bad because when I did this crappy out-of-focus video in Dec '08, I wasn't sure how the GPS function managed to work so well on Google Maps... At that time I didn't know it was achieved by cell-tower distance triangulation and interpolation.
This video is obsolete, but I keep it posted just as an illustration of how many things have been possible on the WING that you'd never hear about or see at T-Mobile.
I'm posting a new video any day now, IN FOCUS ! :)
hey thank you. oops, as i was ready to reply to you I hit "Remove" accidentally.
As of TUES MAY 26, the BEST new ROM (windows operating system & apps) is being released -- it is super fast... easily 3x faster than standard issue T-Mobile software. Plus, there's a brand new "iFonz 2" version 0.5.0 ... stay posted here. I'll have new video incl how to install this stuff.
Yeah, I was beginning to believe my T mobile wing was obsolete until I got many offers. I wanted to upgrade to a Samsung or Iphone so i can have the cool apps, touch float screen etc...
see the brand new iFonz interface & application launcher that runs on the Wing:

It is due for download free on Saturday, may16, 2009.
The newest Operating System for the Wing (just released May 15, 2009) is from "XDA-Developers". To use this, you must backup all your data, because the process will wipe your phone completely & reinstall new, much faster WindowsMobile, with many other speed & memory management optimizations. The Wing fully runs this. CLICK more info
do you know how to speed up the phone and do you know if the phone comes in black i want a black wing if not ill get a blue one and whats the price 4 the phone now i want to upgrade from a white nokia express music phone
I*do* still own mine... because i still get total usage out of it, and refuse to pay to upgrade every 2 years. And it does everything i want. with good software it's the same new interface as the new-selling HTC devices. BUT -- if T-Mob is selling for $350 and 2 year contr that is RIDICULOUS. I wouldn't buy it then. try cnet's guide for choosing phones: i made this line tinyurl(.)com/cnetguide
The WING does not have a powerful processor or a lot of RAM... BUT ... the reason it seems to run slowly is 100% due to the version of Windows Mobile that T-Mobile ships with. I don't know what the WING costs these days, but with the better versions of Windows on it, it is easily twice as fast, has a hard keyboard & soft; video, it;s a great phone. That is no exagerration. But the process to replace the software takes some patience - and it could void your warranty.
Hi. As explained elsewhere in this thread, the WING does not have GPS hardware. But the geniuses at Google found a way to bring pretty-damn-accurate GPS to the Wing using their software. Google for "Google Maps Mobile". They send a link to your phone.
------
Enter your cell number to begin.
Send link to my phone
-----
or visit m(.)google(dotcm)/maps from your phone
Once installed, select within MENU, "USE GPS", and poof it's there with turn-by-turn directions AND "Street View"
In about a week I am posting a new video which is shot properly (unlike this video which was done on spur of moment with my still camera;s video mode)... It's all in sharp closeups -- which shows the Wing using a newer O.S., all new version of Google Maps, the TouchFlo 2D Manila interface, finger-nav start menu. Includes how to flash the rom. If you can buy used Wing on ebay,it's really a great phone when good software is on it.
Ok - let me get this straight: My T-Mobile Wing / HTC Herald DOES have a GPS receiver in it, or you're using a cheap imitation of GPS via GRPS/EDGE? Which one is it using, "quicksite"??
You're right, it is indeed a "cheap imitation" using GPRS triangulation. It's just simpler to explain for most people's purposes. Not everyone needs precision GPS down to the half-block.
There's already been 2 newer versions of Google Maps Mobile since I made this video, so you can focus on what the WING is lacking, or you can, as most regular consumers do, marvel at how Google Maps can locate you wherever you are -- within, as they say, 800 meters, within 1-2 blocks, FREE.
The Technical Explanation: Google Maps Mobile application adds the ability of regular, non-GPS enabled phones to have GPS-like functionality through the use of cellular tower triangulation technology to pinpoint a user's location based on mobile network towers.
The "My Location" service will make it possible to use the service indoors whenever there is cellular reception. The flipside is that the service isn't as accurate as (CONT'D NEXT POST)
(2) .. having a dedicated chipset or a processor that provides GPS functionality like the Qualcomm chips used inside AT&T Tilt/TyTN II.
Google pinpoints your location within a 1/4 mile to 3 miles, which is quite a big spread. No personal data is collected, & "My Location" feature can be turned off anytime. Now, you don't have to enter your location info to search nearby POIs. .. Similar to Navizon: service that triangulates user's approx location based on cell data / WiFi info."
MORE: "There's 3 satellites at least that you must be able to receive from of the 24-32 out there, & they each broadcast a time from a synchronized atomic clock. The differences in those times that you receive at any one time tell you how long the broadcast took to reach you, & thus where you are in relation to the satellites. Note that this doesn't tell you your orientation, many GPSes fake that by interpolating data points."

God Dammit!I would out find about this Ifonz application after I cut off my Internet Package O well I guess I'll download it by using Wi-Fi and stealing my neighbors internet connection lol I love Wi-Fi let other people pay while I reap the benefits but I'll come on here for questions if it doesnt work the way that I plan it.
(( its thanks to your internet connection EDGE that you get your position so its not so acurate but its ok sometimes ))
Maybe you're right. The accuracy, for me, is "pretty damn good", even if it places your location 1-2 blocks away.
When I am driving to a new destination, I use the Google Maps GPS function and it's brilliant at helping me see where I am from zoomed-out seeing freeways, to close, seeing the angle of upcoming streets. The google interface SAYS "seeking satellite information"
I downloaded the ifonz software to my tmobile wing but I dont know where to go from there any suggestions that you guys have would be greatly appreciate??
i use the full plan. i've never investigated the proxy.
but as for these telecoms and all their distinct charges for bandwidth, it ticks me off that i pay for wifi/internet, but a text plan would be separate. that's b.s.
Neither. The beauty of this is that GOOGLE MAPS provides the GPS, i imagine as part of how it is constantly querying its system to draw the maps.
All i can say is I am out and about and if i turn on "use GPS" within the Google Maps app, then the device begins seeking satellite information and it's pretty instantaneous how it locates you on the map. If you start driving the locator is moving with you.
btw, i have to make a whole new video. There's a new G maps out, now w/ Street View. amazing
Can you reply here for the benefit of anyone else reading here: Do you think I described it right as:
* not actually that difficult...
* but, until the instructions are presented more clearly, and in one place, it's just cumbersome, & requires a ton of reading to make sure you're not going to screw anything up
I'd appreciate your reply - to help others.
ALSO: just released is "Green Button" which ties iDialer to the green CALL button. Search it. Vastly better
Really good question: Okay, the truth is: Right NOW, the process to do this is straight-forward, but complicated, in that things must be done in a specific order. The whizzes at XDA-apps are amazing. They figure out everything. But the site-culture there caters to those who want to come learn and tinker.
But what I am doing, beginning December 08, is create a consumer-friendly front-end that makes these tasks accessible and easier, with video guidance. send me mail for more.
The best I can say is this -- because I am not one of the techs at XDA. You really need to know the standard disclaimers:
(1) I am not responsible if you damage or brick your phone
(2) to install a ROM you have to determine first if the ROM installer is for "Hard SPL" or "Soft SPL"-- if you don't know what that means, search there for thread "Hard SPL working!"
(3) This has to do with the way the internals are "signed" by the carriers, and also deal with the "bootloaders". MORE
If you don't know what those phrases mean, you MUST first search there to determine. This is my point, it is not yet consumer-friendly.
(4) The ROMS contain the OS, you do not have to pre-install anything. In fact, you need to know that these installations wipe everything off your phone drive, everything. It starts from the ground up... but these OS versions are so much faster and cleaner and make up for Wing's crappy slow processor. slide keyboard works 100% with ifonz
ANSWER: NO. Not the first time you modify the OS and add apps. Only because you need to follow a sequence precisely -- prob takes a total of a half hour, maybe less. But you have to know what each piece of jargon means.
BUT, ONCE YOUR PHONE's drive has been unlocked, enabling you to "re-flash a ROM" (means: "install a new OS package + apps"), then it is very easy to add/modify/change.
This is what I mean: It is NOT YET consumer friendly
The way you install is using the active sync USB cable. These suped-up OS "ROMS" that people have optimized pretty much install like a standard T-Mobile Windows Upgrade installation. They all use an "RUU" -- ROM Upgrade Utility -- which is a Wizard that oversees the installtion. If you don't know what RUU is, or jargon like that, you MUST use search there and read.
I will add a few more links to "CLICK FOR MORE" info for this video.
Hi, in the (more info) link in the right-hand column next to this video, I have a link to my SIG FILE at the XDA-developer's forum -- the site where most of the best software mods for Windows Mobile is developed.
My SIG FILE links to all the software I have on my Wing (HTC Herald).
Also, THIS link will take you there too; it's a link re-direct service like tiny-u-r-l.

Replace (?) with just the questionmark character: ?
Actually I don't have my wing yet lol. I should of gotten it in the mail yesterday but some delay happened so i might get it today but most likely on monday.
I bought this phone from ebay because i didn't want to pay retail and i used my upgrade a year ago so i still have another year to wait.
Yes, I've been on the site for about 2-3 weeks now trying learn as much as possible so i don't brick my phone.
Only other i can think of is lawfour(which apparently got hacked) and the ifonz home.
I think a good video(if you have time) would be just you recording yourself installing the rom and just telling us what your doing and what programs your using.
A question i have is, Is there a way to find out what SPL you have? and Is Hard SPL and USPL 2 different ways to flash your rom?
THIS IS THE CORRECT PROCESS TO FOLLOW for the Wing, to use HardSPL. This is the one I followed, and the author of this thread also walked me through it, live, via chat.

This us the URL which redirects to the correct thread.

Has everyone who has watched this video known that the WING + Google Maps will give you real time GPS location?
And it works fine with GPRS Edge data connection? Doesn't require 3G or wifi?
Just curious how well known this is...
