I went to the Louvre in Paris and saw "Oath of the Horatii"! It's freaking huge but a masterpiece. The Coronation of Napoleon should also be on this list. I saw that too.
Such beautiful art, by a not so beautiful artist!! I want to dislike David's work, but it's sooooo genius!! He's probably my favorite artist!! Perhaps second to Rembrandt!! I'm not really a big fan of impressionism, I love the more realistic, classical and neo-classical painters best. But Monet's Water Lilies are beautiful!! As well as Van Gogh's Starry Night!! Okay forget everything I said, all art is wonderful!!
beautiful work.i only knew the painting 'the death of marat' which i saw at school during an art history class some thirty years ago.i'm so glad you posted this video so that i could see other examples of his paintings.
There's actually several other copies of the painting "The Death of Marat", made by David's students. One of them shows not the inscription "à Marat David" but the following statement instead : "N'ayant pu me corrompre, ils m'ont assassiné", in other words : "Since they were unable to corrupt me, they murdered me".
That particular copy can be seen the the French Art museum of Reims.
in the paper is written the name of the woman who stabbed him , he used to write black list of people who he considered to be dangerous , so he sent them to the guillotine ,. this woman could enter to his house because she said that she had a list of people to be added , but she was hiding a knife , and she killed him , he had a skin desease, thats why he used to write having a hot bath
the death of socrates is just so amazing , so realistic , it reminds me the platonic dialogue , socrates appealing to the argument of the spirit inmortality .. great artwork ...and the death of marat and napoleon crossing the alps are just true masterpieces ... definetly one of the gretest academic painters
It's just wonderful, thank you so much for uploading it!
Can anyone translate for me whatever is written in 2:02?
I'm writing a project about this artist, and I really think knowing what's actually written might help, though I did read about the general idea and the double meaning behind the written paper... still, it'd be great if anyone who knows French could help me with that :)
oh, that's great :) Just wanted to know who that was for in the first place. I mean, in the end of course when Marie Anne stabbed him the paper got another meaning, but I just wanted to know if it was Marie who wrote it in the first place, just to check one of my sources that didn't seem reliable. So it isn't. Thanks!!! you really saved me :)
I think that Marat was well protected by his family, so Charlotte couldn't enter Marat's room, That's why she told that she had a list of "traitors" to give personally to Marat. And Marat let her enter in his room. By the way, I think that the "traitors list" she gave to Marat was just a laundry list...
"Клятва Горациев" - картина, которая принесла славу художнику. Давид разделял идеалы Французской революции и принимал активное участие в политической жизни. Он создал Национальный музей в Лувре. В 1804 г. Наполеон назначил Давида "первым художником".
Thank you so much for sharing your prodigous talents with the rest of us. I truly regard your "Christmas" videos as a present. "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" was more or less my Christmas e-card last year. Like Oliver said, "More, please, sir."
I LOVE the way you show your perspective on art. Always a pleasure and an honor to view and I find myself coming back to pieces like this when I need a break from the maddening world! Thank you and more, please!
A great reminder of a fine artist's accomplishment and his up-close view of the Revolution and the arrival of Napoleon--French history and art history in one! Thanks!
Really liked the transitions; perfect music accompanionment (sp?). Didn't realize that some of Jacques Louis David's paintings were so sad. Human history.
I always liked intervention of the sabine women.. my professor bryson compared it to a dance, hah. Powerful human bodies there, powerful emotional force.
I am very impressed with the HD. The clarity is awesome. Your choice of background music is a very gentle and calming rendition that is used to accompany the pictures. Thank you for sharing.
Congratulations! Jacques-Louis David and Ludwig van Beethoven is a great match ! We know from history of music how was Beethoven's relationship to Napoleon Bonaparte
why was david hated at that time in france?

David and Beethoven: two consummate Classicists whose works, nonetheless, have evoked deep emotions in my heart.

"13 july 1793,
Marie Anne Charlotte Corday to the citizen Marat :
It's because i'm quite unhappy that I ask for your benevolence..."
Difficult to translate, it's written in an old fashioned french.
