i need to know the track which plays in the background till 1 min and 30 secs , its so damn awesome, if you have composed it, i would like to buy the song man!!! :) :)
@123andrelevy Don't quote me on this, but if I remember correctly, the "down" beat is the first beat of a measure. So, say you were in 4/4 (4 beats per measure of course), and you had a metronome going 1-2-3-4, the 1 is the "down beat" and the 4 is the "up beat".
If you were (can't remember the exact term), the guy in front of an orchestra (the mistero?), whe he moves his wand-thing he acts as the metronome for the orchestra to see. When his wand does down, that's beat 1 of the measure, etc.
@JF0urnier The downbeat is the 1 and the 2, and the 3, and the 4. It's when your foot goes down with each beat in the measure. For example, let's say you have 4/4, and have 8th notes. That's 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and. Your foot is down on the 1 and up on the and. The and is the upbeat. For each downbeat, there's an upbeat.
If it's a 16th note run, that's 1-e-and-a 2-e-and-a 3-e-and-a 4-e-and-a. The number is the downbeat, and everything else happens on the upbeat.
This bass is perfect. It sounds sonorous from bottom to top end. I'm a 4 string player through and through but I would buy this immediately if I were a wealthier man. Ed, what's it like to have the best job in the world?
@RobiRoadkill - I guess so, the bass was designed to be used with these strings though - Thomastik Acousticores. Not sure if it's going to hurt the bass or not - they are very low tension.
@jazzybassmasterboy - The title is the name of the bass - Rick Turner Renaissance Bass, it's a 6-string. I don't remember the woods... I believe the top was Koa.
I think I played an 4 string frettless version of that at the Corner Music in Nashville the other day. Unbelievable bass. Super light and just like butter!
your review is great and i really like the bass and its unique tone but i wanna know that would the nylon core strings handle slapping or would they break
Nice review, as usual. The background music that was playing during your introductory remarks made it difficult for me to hear what you were saying without straining; too many years in front of bass cabs, I guess. Other than that, great review. Thanks.
@mcg413 - Mainly electric bass and amps, pedals, etc. I play upright bass, but Guitar World doesn't have any interest in that, and so far no upright bass related companies have approached me for my services. I'm happy to do it though.
What a beautiful sounding instrument. As a bassist myself, I tend to be a bit dismissive of 6 string basses because of the sound (I usually think if you want more strings to solo on then get a guitar instead - it sounds better). But the sound of this instrument (I don't think the word bass does it justice) is gorgeous I could listen to it all day.
This might be my new favorite review of yours. That classical guitar-esque sound just blows me away. I appreciated the addition of those tracks playing behind your schpiel - not to say I don't want to hear you talk, but I'd really like to have that track all by itself to just relax to.
Have you ever played on a Jazz record Ed? You should totally do some solo bass stuff man! Like everything here and on the Bongo video! Your a solo jazzy bass genious!
Wow. Both of the bass, and the playing. Ed, this makes me want to see you review a Rob Allen bass. (Hint, hint). Once again, great review and great playing.
The one thing I enjoy most about your reviews is your playing. You have some beautiful phrases, and you could really make the most of this beautiful bass. It makes me want one even more!
As always, Ed, lots to enjoy in your reviews. The jazz solo at the beginning is wonderful, but your Bach is the showpiece. How beautiful. Thanks. Dominik
@DanielzBassz - Well, I've listened to lots of people... but my big influences are Wes Montgomery, Clifford Brown, Scott LaFaro, Eddie Gomez, NHOP, Trane, Miles... really too many to mention.
@squirtlewa - 1) I never took physics. 2) I've been playing on piezos for 35 years, and know people that make them, and they call them "pie-zo, or pee-ay-zo". It doesn't make a damn bit of difference.
It is amazing, truly looks fascinating and you can feel the vibe in it only looking at the guitar. But I was stunned when I heard an artificial bass-line in the synback at the beginning :)
And I don't think it's been that long since your last video.
It's like having Christmas and birthday presents at the same time!
As much as I recognize these exotic basses as real works of beauty, I just don't find myself ever getting attached to these "coffee table" styles. On me, it would look as pretentious as a 16-year old driving a ferrari.

I don't suppose the background music has a name (or if you were just soloing over some chords)?

Sick bass, sick chops. Piezo = italian for "piece" (as in the little pieces of crystal that are integral to the technology.)

@IRuinEvrything actually piece in Italian is "pezzo". Piezo derives from the Greek word "piezein" which means "to press, to squeeze" ;)
