It's easy for Tancredo and others to look back at immigrants 100 years or so ago and now say "Oh, they all learned English and assimilated into an American culture" - but back then that wasn't exactly the case. Over decades and decades they assimilated gradually, as will Mexican immigrants over a period of many decades. We can't just snap our fingers and have Mexican and American cultures merge in a period of a few years, but they will blend and merge over time - so he is incorrect.

Learning a language does take some time, though, and you can't just snap your fingers and learn English overnight. You do need a bit of a history lesson, though - European people who migrated here in great numbers during the 1800s - those groups held onto their native roots and cultures for MANY years before "assimilating." It takes years, though. Look up the movie "Gangs of New York."

The American southwest does not belong to Mexicans. Aside from a few speckled settlements and indigenous tribes the territory was uninhabited. The only reason we didn't annex Mexico in it's entirety was precisely because politicians like John. I don't see how hanging on to your cultural roots is a bad thing, including language. Nobody complains about European customs, food, whatever that are now considered "American." Sure, people need to learn English to get along in daily life, but otherwise, what's the problem? It's easy for Tancredo and others to look back at immigrants 100 years or so ago and now say "Oh, they all learned English and assimilated into an American culture" - but back then that wasn't exactly the case. Over decades and decades they assimilated gradually, as will Mexican immigrants over a period of many decades. We can't just snap our fingers and have Mexican and American cultures merge in a period of a few years, but they will blend and merge over time - so he is incorrect.

I think most Caucasians in Europe and the U.S. have had a lot of "good fortune" with regards to economic growth and such over the past few centuries. Learning a language does take some time, though, and you can't just snap your fingers and learn English overnight. You do need a bit of a history lesson, though - European people who migrated here in great numbers during the 1800s - those groups held onto their native roots and cultures for MANY years before "assimilating." It takes years, though. Look up the movie "Gangs of New York."

Ethnic communities don't assimilate if they are constantly refreshed with new immigrants from the homeland. The difference between the Irish and the founding american stock was marginal. Poor Mexicans or the Mexican middle class are not eligible to apply for U.S visas and therefore cannot come into the U.S. legally. This is a privilege that only rich Mexican families have. NAFTA is to blame for all of this. What about the corporations that ship jobs overseas. Americans should be protesting against these greedy multinational industries. So what if first gen-ers suck at English; I've heard enough Americans try to learn foreign languages (here and abroad), and they sucked, too! But so what? If facility with the English language is the benchmark for -- what, loyalty? good citizenship? -- then a lot of Americans would rank pretty low! A lot of what supposedly passes for English in the business world isn't even middle-school level!

I don't see how hanging on to your cultural roots is a bad thing, including language. Nobody complains about European customs, food, whatever that are now considered "American." Sure, people need to learn English to get along in daily life, but otherwise, what's the problem? Besides, first gen immigrants often suck at the adopted language, whatever it may be, but that problem is solved by the next generation.

So how is forceful assimilation a good thing? How do you do that? Does he want to somehow enforce a "process?" What does this process involve? Is there a timeline for learning English? Who gets to pay for that? Was there a deadline among past immigrant groups for learning English? Who got to enforce that? Did anyone mandate how long Tancredo's grandparents had to learn English?

I can get behind Tancredo on a lot of things, but, his support for the disasters we are involved in over in the Middle East is a deal breaker. I find that the Republirats are great on some issues, but the glaring insanity they have on other issues is something I cannot stomach. We can waste tons of money and lives over in 6th worlds craphole, BUT, we cannot even secure our own borders....that is beyond pathetic.

I agree. Since there are practically no Americans there. There are millions of Latinos here. We have always been here. When you took that Mexican cession, you also took a completely different culture with it. Even those Texas founding fathers made documents available in Spanish when they illegally broke away from Mexico.
Spanish is just as much a part of the U.S. as English, plain and simple.

Tancredo's views are dangerous and not in the spirit of what this country stands for. Weren't the words, "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free" inscribed on the Statue of Liberty? Who cares if newcomers don't assimilate quickly? Their children and descendants certainly will assimilate into the mainstream. This sort of "cultural purity" was what led America to specifically ban immigration for the first time in its history, with the Chinese Exclusion Act.
