What's up dude, nice video with the explanations. What is the better option between a Nikon and a Canon... I have heard many say the Canon because of the full range of lenses. u have good videos and I do like them, but I am sick of your Nikon pronunciation, you should say word Nikon forgeting about I and say it as a E, pls keep that in mind, I am sure there is a few people out there getting very same impression.

@Jakob1056687 That is a tough choice, the d7000 has the best image quality and the canon is the fastest. You will probably want to opt for speed if you shoot mainly fast wildlife like birds.
hi. how is the low light capability of both the D300 and the D300s? im thinking of upgrading from my D200 to either of those two. the D3's (including the D700) are too expensive for my pocket.

@HigginsJ23 - most likely, I think at least, it looks like the 70-200 2.8 lens. they are close to $2000. maybe i am wrong, but that is my guess. If there is a 70-300, I am not sure. The 70-2000 is huge, that is why I think so.
I had a Nikon D700. (It was stolen) I have a D300s and D90.
I used to have a canon Eos5dmk1.
All in all the Nikon D700 produces great images. But I was never close enough for wildlife. The Canon is fine- but slow and with cruddy screen. Sold it. The D300 is a joy to use, I have super lenses. But sometimes I wish I had my D700 back with my MF prime 50mm lens.... now that was something
Have you had any problems at all with your 300s? Ive had mine for about 2 months now and just recently started having an issue with it. When you fire the shutter, it doesnt record image to card. This has been an itermittant problem that doesnt happen all the time but enough to really aggravate me....especially at 1800 bucks.
Any advice someone might have would be great. The camera is now on its way to NIKON for repair
Another difference between the D300 and D300s is the memory card slot, the D300 has only one but D300s has 2, SD and CF. It not only offers more storage space but for those who are interested in using the Eye-fi card to shoot wireless tethering onto the computer or iPad. You can basically shoot and store images directly onto the computer and have virtually unlimited storage since it can automatically delete the images from the card once the image is transferred.

Everything else being relatively equal, and not caring about video that much since I have a proper dv cam, having more comfortably placed controls and an extra SD/SDHC slot seems worth it to me.

@thhall459 if i was you, i would go for a 14-24 and then get either a 70-200mm or 70-300mm. mid range zooms dont make alot of sense, at least to me becuase it makes more sense to take a couple steps forward with the 14-24mm or a couple steps back with the 70-200mm or 70-300mm. your going to probably end up getting 70-200mm/70--300mm in the end anyway to get that extra zoom
@thhall459 personally i think its best to go with a zoom (like the 70-200mm/70-300mm) and a wide angle (like the 14-24mm). at the end of the day, you will probably get a zoom like the 70-200mm to cover that gap and it makes alot more sense (tome) to get a wide angle and then walk a couple steps forward or backwards to make up for that 24-70mm range.
the D5000 is a solid entry level, not compared to the D300/s at all. The D3000 is a pure joke, it felt like it was going to break under the pressure of my hand gripping it.
I don't understand how you can review a camera you don't have! Ok so the D300 and D300s are very similar, but this just seems like a cheap shot at getting yourself some more exposure (no pun intended!) Some reviewers (that bizarrely actually have used the camera) have said that the focusing is faster from your experience, whats your opinion on this?
I cant own every nikon camera. And I have used the camera extensively at a local best buy. I brought my d300 to the store as well to compare and there was no noticeable difference in focusing speed.
Say man don't pay attention to it someones always goin to complain about something.. Anyways man you may have mentioned it in another video but what lens is that big lens and how much if you don't mind me asking?
yeah, one complaint is that they took a little longer to cut down on the loud af, so if that bothers you, then make sure to get a new model, for example, their 18-250 3.5-6.3 is very loud, but their new, 18-270 macro vc is silent and fast, =)
@j0vencio Actually, not so. I've heard it being pronounced several different ways, and pronunciation depends mostly on personal preference, and perhaps certain accents have an effect. However, on a video that Nikon themselves made on their own website, they pronounce it like he does in the video.
If that's what you like to call it, I couldn't care less. I'm just saying that it isn't specifically "knee-con". Personally, I say it the way he does. What ever suits your fancy! =)
I meant a chunk of money. I am going to wait until the new D700x comes out and probably get that ( low light may not be as good as d700, but 35m film is the best for my kind of low ligt I got some new lenses, nikon 105mm micro vr and 10.5mm dx fisheye, which I have had a lot more fun with than I would have another dx camera. My dream would be a d700x, with the 14-24 wide angle beast, and nikon to put out a 200mm VR micro, AND a Mamiya 645 af with 120/220 back and gossen reflected light meter.
The time limit on the D300s for video recording is not due to sensor overheating but due to the pc file that it creates which has a size limit and hence video length limit. Let's get facts straight please.
so let's say you take a 5 min. video, and you wait for it to cool down, will the battery life be significantly low? Or will it be strong enough to record another short video?
That is how it goes though, they make money. There really is not that much different with the second generation nikon cameras in general. Sure they have fancy features, and two more megapixels, but the only thing that really matters are the new meters. They are better, but you can still work around the crappy meter in the D80 and get some nice looking photos. I was going to get the d300, but then I started thinking about the fact that the d700 is a much much wiser way to spend that much
hey i have a nikon d60, after I learn and use this camera up then I would like to upgrade to a semi pro (higher than the d5000) so could you recommend a good upgrade from the d60?
I checked out the nikon d300s at best buy and did some test shots and I dont see a huge difference in noise quality. The nikon d300s might be slightly better at higher iso, but its is not that noticeable.
It looks like the D300s has microlens to cover the CMOS. (Captures 100% of the incoming light instead of 40%) Can anyone confirm that it has this technoligy? Did D300 have microlens technoligy?
There's no reason why you shouldn't get the D300s over the D300. Nikon has pretty much discontinued the D300 to make room for the D300s and the price is staying exactly the same. The D300s is basically a bug-free version of the D300 with a few extra new features. I wouldn't a buy a used D300 at all. I much would rather wait for the D300s.
Sorry I ment to say I would rather buy a used nikon d300 for 500 dollars less instead of a new nikon d300s, because I dont need the video and would rather save the money. If it is a matter of buying one of the cameras new than yes you should just get the nikon d300s. In the video I say this.
Hey dude, I really like your clear and succinct way of giving us the info we need. Really helps to have things explained clearly like that.
I would say though, that if you are comparing two nikons, you don't need to say ''NIKON'' quite so much. Just the model. i think in this video you used about three minutes up just repeatedly telling us that these were nikon, when we already got that.
I seem to remember having a conversation with you about using medium format film cameras, Have you bought one yet?
I recomend the Bronica, I take it first and my d300 second all over the world, just because the images I come back with are so much better. I'm going to Guyana next month and I will definnately be taking the Bronica even though it means lugging a much heavier object through those steaming jungles.
i think the video is neat but i still think buying a dslr i would rather have more features rather then a video feature, you can get a nice video camera for like 200$ and film 20+ mins
If you know anything about photography or videography, you would know picture quality from DSLRs are light years ahead of any camcorders out there. People don't buy DSLRs for the video feature, it's just an added bonus. Only idiots would buy it to use as a camcorder. People use the video feature for memos and small clips only. Know what your talking about before making such a stupid comment.
Well not to talk or anything, i went to school, and i would say i know a lot more about photography, now im just saying thats all but.. i dont think my comment is so stupid.. all i said is i dont think i would buy a Dslr (Which is most of the time more money) just for a video feature.. i never said it wouldnt be useful and or of course you can use them for Memo's etc. When i tested out the D90, the video was perfect to record clips of a event , with pictures as well.
When I've looked at the video mode on the d90 I was very underimpressed by the image quality, especially the shutterlag which made the image kind of rubbery and unusable as a serious piece of kit. Do you think the 300s has solved this problem?I noticed they have sorted out the sound which was its othe big problem. What are your thoughts?
I am getting a D300s now that people believe that the D400 won't be coming out within the next 6months. Can't wait along with the new 18-200mm vrII lense!
Thanks again bro for the reviews.. i always love ur videos!
bytheway iam new to photography, and i havent got a dslr yet, but im considering to purchase brand new d300 because its a great camera! and now a new version, a d300s is arriving this aug., well, i was thinking if the upgrades are significant and worth the price.. if it does, then i must choose d300s over d300.
I highly wouldn't reccomend going right to a D300. The controls are very different from the lower end DSLR's and can be extremely hard to learn if you're new to photography. I would HIGHLY reccomend getting a D90 and getting familiar with all the controls, THEN going to a D300 or D300s. Goodluck with it dude, and most importantly, have fun with it!
Two great features of the D300s is the improved speed in shutter delay and inital AF-speed. The D300s now has the same speed in shutter delay and inital AF as the D3. For some people this is very important.
Thank you so much for video reviews, I am Nikon guy too, and I like to get some useful info about Nikon product for my future upgrades. Doing good job with your reviews!
I think the shorter video time, 4 or 5 minutes is to do with tax. If it's as capable as a camcorder, extra tax is slapped on, nothing to do with the sensor or circuitry overheating.
You give some good advice here, I wonder if there will be be a one stop improvement in high iso noise?
Nope it's the movie format. It doesn't allow more than 5 minutes of recording. Future versions of the MotionJPEG-standard may allow longer movies to be captured. Atleast thats Nikons official reason, lol.
You mention maybe buying a used D300, I'm just curious for your opinion on whether for the same price you would get a used D300 or a new D90. as the D90 does have some newer features than the D300, even though the D300 is the more pro level camera.
I would get the used nikon d300 only because it is faster, better auto focus, faster processing, faster frame rate. I am a wildlife photographer so I need the speed, but if action photography is not your thing I would go for the nikon d90.
QQQQcon, regardless of fetzie's opinion, I find your comments useful and enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work. Glad you have increased the frequency.
I didnt just read a press document, I got sample images from the nikon d300s to compare with the nikon d300 (which I own and is essentially the same as the d300s). Also all of the new features on the nikon d300s are taken from older nikon models (except the dual SD and CF slots) all of which I have handled, so I think it is perfectly reasonable for me to review the d300s without holding it seeing as I have already used all the cameras that have the new features found on the d300s.
Hmmm... I've been saving up for a D90, but now I think I should save up a bit more for the D300s. It has all the features I want and more, but obviously it's a lot more expensive than the D90. What a dilemma!!
What's the big deal here? Everyone in North American pronounces it like he does. Nikon: as in Nice, Night, Nine, Nitrate, Niacin, etc... Those all have I's.
Because you said the D300s is 1800 and that we can get a used D300 for pretty much the same price. So that would mean the D300 brand new is more expensive??
no you miss understood. I said you can get a New nikon d300s for almost the same price of a NEW nikon d300. If you dint need the video mode I recommend you get a used nikon d300 which will be much cheaper than the nikon d300s.
By the way, I love your videos! Very informative and your photos are amazing for an 18 year old. Are you a hobbyist or do you actually provide services to clients?
Well may I suggest selling your work for stock photgraphy?
I mean your photos of landscaping and mother nature is beyond impressive. I'm really surprised that you aren't traveling around the world photographing for National Geographic.
I'm really impressed with your work and I would seriously look into stock photography if I were you.
I had a family member give me a sight for selling stock photography and I actually misplaced the paper. However, at the time he gave it to me, I checked it out and the site is really good for beginners and novice photographers but the pay is bad in my eyes; for every person that buys your photo, you receive I think 25 or 15 cents. I'm not quite sure which one it is, it might even be lower. But I wouldn't suggest that site for you even if I did find the paper because your photos are worth more.
But if you are interested, I'll give you the site (when I find the paper). And I'll help you find a site by tapping into my resources and seeing what's a reasonable site for you to post up and sell...I really want to see you succeed. You're young, talented and have an amazing eye for art. I wanna see you make it.
they should have made it a 14 or 15 mp and 1080p at 24 fps.also u can already get 8 fps so not ver y good thing.but for all the stuff u get now ,this is a alot better camera.because the d300 original was not worth the price but no it is .keep up the good work man.good videos, very usefull informatiosn.

I find the d300 photos more pleasing than those of the d7000.
Maybe they have packed too many pixels onto the sensor on the d7000.

WHY do you people complain about only 5minutes video in a DSLR??? It has only 5minutes anyway....
Rather buy a proper video camera to use what it is made for.
I have my D300S since April when I switched from the Canon EOS 50D.... Best ever switch I made on technology..
The quite mode is NOT that silent, some people heard it when I used it..
The best lens for using on the D300S is for me a 17-55mm F2.8. It gives you more or less the same DOF like a 24-0mm F2.8 on a full frame like the D700

get the d90 and save for money for better lens. a better lens on the d90 will beat an ok lens on the d300 at normal shooting conditions.

the D5000 is a solid entry level, not compared to the D300/s at all.

P.S 'ment' should be spelt 'meant'
Pedro30ish 2 years ago
I cant own every nikon camera. And I have used the camera extensively at a local best buy. I brought my d300 to the store as well to compare and there was no noticeable difference in focusing speed.

smalltownkid2004 2 years ago
yes the Tamron 70-200 is just about the same image quality as the nikon 70-200 (the first gen, idk about the second gen one)
photoboy2005 2 years ago
yeah, one complaint is that they took a little longer to cut down on the loud af, so if that bothers you, then make sure to get a new model, for example, their 18-250 3.5-6.3 is very loud, but their new, 18-270 macro vc is silent and fast, =)

j0vencio 2 years ago 20
Yep sure is but I'll probly stick to saying it like he does it sounds better.
smalltownkid2004 2 years ago

My dream would be a d700x, with the 14-24 wide angle beast, and nikon to put out a 200mm VR micro, AND a Mamiya 645 af with 120/220 back and gossen reflected light meter.
jun19fan40 2 years ago
The time limit on the D300s for video recording is not due to sensor overheating but due to the pc file that it creates which has a size limit and hence video length limit. Let's get facts straight please.
michalpfeil 2 years ago
So the size limit is only based on the size of the flash card you insert into the camera then?
colorprintingforum 2 years ago
so let's say you take a 5 min. video, and you wait for it to cool down, will the battery life be significantly low? Or will it be strong enough to record another short video?

wow nice job nikon thanks for making ground breaking features :(
socal1000 2 years ago
That is how it goes though, they make money. There really is not that much different with the second generation nikon cameras in general. Sure they have fancy features, and two more megapixels, but the only thing that really matters are the new meters. They are better, but you can still work around the crappy meter in the D80 and get some nice looking photos. I was going to get the d300, but then I started thinking about the fact that the d700 is a much much wiser way to spend that much

I cant buy everything. I go to stores to use the camera and then review them wen I am at home.
QQQQcon 2 years ago
I have chosen to buy the D300 over the D300S for the following reasons ....
1. I have no use for the video mode. For me it would be a total waste of money (if I want HD video I will buy a proper HD camera).
2. I want the MB-D10 for vertical shooting, which also covers the 8 fps.
3. There are no other changes that warrant the additional price.
4. With the price drop I can save CA$300 over the "S". Savings I will use to buy better zoom lens (AF-S 70-200 VR).

Do you thing Canon 7D has better noise performance at high ISO than Nikon D300s? And does both cameras have microlens to cover the CMOS?

I doubt it with all those pixels. Micro lenses might help it but if anything the nikon d300s will have better performance at high iso.

It looks like the D300s has microlens to cover the CMOS. (Captures 100% of the incoming light instead of 40%) Can anyone confirm that it has this technoligy? Did D300 have microlens technoligy?
Ultimateracepro 2 years ago
There's no reason why you shouldn't get the D300s over the D300. Nikon has pretty much discontinued the D300 to make room for the D300s and the price is staying exactly the same. The D300s is basically a bug-free version of the D300 with a few extra new features. I wouldn't a buy a used D300 at all. I much would rather wait for the D300s.
DevilsCuz 2 years ago
If you want to pay 500 or more dollars for video and a few other small features on the nikon d300s be my guest.
QQQQcon 2 years ago
It's not $500 more. Check B&H out. The D300 and D300s are both the same price new.
DevilsCuz 2 years ago
Sorry I ment to say I would rather buy a used nikon d300 for 500 dollars less instead of a new nikon d300s, because I dont need the video and would rather save the money. If it is a matter of buying one of the cameras new than yes you should just get the nikon d300s. In the video I say this.

pickyouupatnine 2 years ago
Hey dude, I really like your clear and succinct way of giving us the info we need. Really helps to have things explained clearly like that.
I would say though, that if you are comparing two nikons, you don't need to say ''NIKON'' quite so much. Just the model. i think in this video you used about three minutes up just repeatedly telling us that these were nikon, when we already got that.
Thanks again for this video, was a big help!
All the best...
dawsoncjames 2 years ago
I seem to remember having a conversation with you about using medium format film cameras, Have you bought one yet?
I recomend the Bronica, I take it first and my d300 second all over the world, just because the images I come back with are so much better. I'm going to Guyana next month and I will definnately be taking the Bronica even though it means lugging a much heavier object through those steaming jungles.

i think the video is neat but i still think buying a dslr i would rather have more features rather then a video feature, you can get a nice video camera for like 200$ and film 20+ mins
Recon9143 2 years ago
If you know anything about photography or videography, you would know picture quality from DSLRs are light years ahead of any camcorders out there. People don't buy DSLRs for the video feature, it's just an added bonus. Only idiots would buy it to use as a camcorder. People use the video feature for memos and small clips only. Know what your talking about before making such a stupid comment.
DevilsCuz 2 years ago
Well not to talk or anything, i went to school, and i would say i know a lot more about photography, now im just saying thats all but.. i dont think my comment is so stupid.. all i said is i dont think i would buy a Dslr (Which is most of the time more money) just for a video feature.. i never said it wouldnt be useful and or of course you can use them for Memo's etc. When i tested out the D90, the video was perfect to record clips of a event , with pictures as well.
Recon9143 2 years ago
When I've looked at the video mode on the d90 I was very underimpressed by the image quality, especially the shutterlag which made the image kind of rubbery and unusable as a serious piece of kit. Do you think the 300s has solved this problem?I noticed they have sorted out the sound which was its othe big problem. What are your thoughts?
mikongo 2 years ago
I dont think the d300s video will be all that different.

bytheway iam new to photography, and i havent got a dslr yet, but im considering to purchase brand new d300 because its a great camera! and now a new version, a d300s is arriving this aug., well, i was thinking if the upgrades are significant and worth the price.. if it does, then i must choose d300s over d300.
thanks and more power!
flashofgenius1 2 years ago
I highly wouldn't reccomend going right to a D300. The controls are very different from the lower end DSLR's and can be extremely hard to learn if you're new to photography. I would HIGHLY reccomend getting a D90 and getting familiar with all the controls, THEN going to a D300 or D300s. Goodluck with it dude, and most importantly, have fun with it!
Buku9 2 years ago
Two great features of the D300s is the improved speed in shutter delay and inital AF-speed. The D300s now has the same speed in shutter delay and inital AF as the D3. For some people this is very important.
CaesarRex 2 years ago
I will improve the video once the nikon d300s comes out. If that is true I will add it.
QQQQcon 2 years ago
Thank you so much for video reviews, I am Nikon guy too, and I like to get some useful info about Nikon product for my future upgrades. Doing good job with your reviews!
krasav4ik82 2 years ago
I think the shorter video time, 4 or 5 minutes is to do with tax. If it's as capable as a camcorder, extra tax is slapped on, nothing to do with the sensor or circuitry overheating.
You give some good advice here, I wonder if there will be be a one stop improvement in high iso noise?
curlykale 2 years ago
Nope it's the movie format. It doesn't allow more than 5 minutes of recording. Future versions of the MotionJPEG-standard may allow longer movies to be captured. Atleast thats Nikons official reason, lol.
CaesarRex 2 years ago
You mention maybe buying a used D300, I'm just curious for your opinion on whether for the same price you would get a used D300 or a new D90. as the D90 does have some newer features than the D300, even though the D300 is the more pro level camera.
Seanwmca 2 years ago
I would get the used nikon d300 only because it is faster, better auto focus, faster processing, faster frame rate. I am a wildlife photographer so I need the speed, but if action photography is not your thing I would go for the nikon d90.

lets hope you get to do a review of the cameras after actually using them not just from what you have read written in a press document.
dombower 2 years ago

What a dilemma!!

sexualburgerking 2 years ago
Wait. So the D300s is cheaper than the D300?
Because you said the D300s is 1800 and that we can get a used D300 for pretty much the same price. So that would mean the D300 brand new is more expensive??
AllAmericanGuy01 2 years ago
no you miss understood. I said you can get a New nikon d300s for almost the same price of a NEW nikon d300. If you dint need the video mode I recommend you get a used nikon d300 which will be much cheaper than the nikon d300s.

I'm really impressed with your work and I would seriously look into stock photography if I were you.
Amazing job!
AllAmericanGuy01 2 years ago
I sell my images but I wouldnt know what sites to sell stock photography on.
QQQQcon 2 years ago
I had a family member give me a sight for selling stock photography and I actually misplaced the paper. However, at the time he gave it to me, I checked it out and the site is really good for beginners and novice photographers but the pay is bad in my eyes; for every person that buys your photo, you receive I think 25 or 15 cents. I'm not quite sure which one it is, it might even be lower. But I wouldn't suggest that site for you even if I did find the paper because your photos are worth more.
AllAmericanGuy01 2 years ago
But if you are interested, I'll give you the site (when I find the paper). And I'll help you find a site by tapping into my resources and seeing what's a reasonable site for you to post up and sell...I really want to see you succeed. You're young, talented and have an amazing eye for art. I wanna see you make it.
