Why are some complaining about this English version? Take it on its own terms. Art is not scholarship, otherwise every Hollywood film would be condemned, including THE SEARCHERS, VERTIGO, and CASABLANCA. Wright-Forrest made a career adapting classical composers for the stage; then there's Lilac (aka Blossom) Time based on Schubert's lieder. Why not condemn the funeral march based on Frere Jacques from Mahler's First Symphony? As a French folk song it's ridiculous; as music it's SUBLIME.
What a stupid English version of a great song. I was brought up on Lanza, my mother loved him and I still think he had talent. Please don't judge him on this nonsense.
You uploaded it, so I guess you disagree. Fair enough.Pity that a man with such a great Italian name couldn't do the song justice by singing the Italian lyrics, but whatever rocks your boat ieoc6013
The Original Song was "funiculi funicula" as the author said dedicate to the sky train who used to carry people from the city to the upper hills of the most beautiful city of the World.
I am from Naples and I'm so glad that someone from a foreigen country appriced an important piece of my culture.
This is something cheerful as our town is facing a terrible time
As someone on the shady side of 40, I have to say I never heard the word 'gay' meaning 'homosexual' until about 20 years ago. In the UK the word was 'bent'. The language is going to pot! LOL
This is part of a movie, i saw it long time ago. If i am not mistaking it's about Mario Lanza's life. The audience was composed out of simple people coming out from work, in front of a factory. It was sang in front of an english audience, (not necessarily music lovers). The voice is perfect and the music divine in this version too. More accessible for common people in my opinion...
This is not a song from a movie, this is an 19th centery Neapolitan song which was arranged by Italian composer Luigi Denza. In the original it is called "Funiculi, funicula". It is though, possible that Lanza sang it in a motion picture cause he realy was a opera singer and a movie star back in the fifties. He famously had portrayed another great Italian singer much adored in USA on the beginiing of 20th century - Enrico (Enzo) Caruso.
This version of the song is from a movie, maybe not so inspired but it was sung in front of english speaking people, (not necessarily music lovers). The voice is perfect and the music devine, in this version too. More accessible for common people in my opinion
Some think the world is made for fun and frolic, And so do I! And so do I! Some think it well to be all melancholic, To pine and sigh; to pine and sigh; But I, I love to spend my time in singing, Some joyous song, some joyous song, To set the air with music bravely ringing Is far from wrong! Is far from wrong! Listen, listen, echoes sound afar! Listen, listen, echoes sound afar! Funiculi, funicula, funiculi, funicula! Echoes sound afar, funiculi, funicula!

What a fucking load of bullshit, stupid fucking idiots without anything else to do but spoil this beautiful song with such an awful interpretation, because that is not a translation, seriously? What the fuck?Whats the point of this crap?
'Hollywood' bastardization, Lanza and what he did best were not excepted. However.........
as the arranger/conductor Christopher Palmer wrote in 1993, Mario "rarely sang trash, and on the rare occasions when he did, he made it sound better than it had any right to sound."

"Mario Lanza - Funiculi , Funicula . Neopolitan"
without the quotes.

Okay, I feel like the little boy in the Emperor's New Clothes.
I love Mario Lanza. I own almost everything commercially released on CD that he's ever done. I even have the rare Hollywood Bowl/Coke show CD.
I have to say, this is the most atrocious arrangement I've ever heard of any song, ever. Lanza sounds great, but the lyrics are horrible.
badpdx 3 years ago
Atrocious or not, it is him all right. :-)

@badpdx I am looking for the Hollywood Bowl recordings for a long time! Can you please tell me where to get them? Kind regards

@badpdx I agree. Lanza is great. Lyrics are appalling.

People have commented about the "translation".
This is NOT an English translation. It is simply a song sung to the tune of the original.
