I thought about it for a long time, and I've come up with this theory: the monument is a fake. Not the sculptures and videos and stuff, but the thing that it is commemorating is fake. I think that, in universe, ONI made this monument as a cover up for anything relating to the Forerunners or the Flood. How better else would the government explain the mysterious disappearance of their greatest warrior than to have him look like he died in a blaze of tear-jerking glory? But it's only a theory...

Out of any game out there today, the complete Halo storyline beats them all. I beat ODST which takes place before Halo 1, when the covenant attacks earth, and the stories from all the other Halos just fell into place in my mind. Who knows what Halo Reach will uncover.

They were ads before Halo 3 was released to build up the story and the hype, in the form of films made after the Halo events. There are a whole series of short videos and they are all amazing. This particular one is about the battle for New Mombasa (which ironically isn't in Halo 3).
