  • Really nice, simple refined playing.

  • i hate people who ask for a thumbs up.

  • Awesome. Thank you!

  • OMG.........you know what I think,hence The Sessions '85........beautiful!

  • awesome job man this song is beautiful and soo hard

  • He kinda looks like the janitor from Scrubs

  • seen him yesterday @ the food and drink festival in liverpool and he rocked everybody loved him AND.....i'm recording him for my music project in school

he is truly a wonderful and talented man

  • i liked the part where he played the guitar

  • i LOVE this!!!

  • This is so inspiring! It really makes me pick up my guitar and practice! Thank you for doing this!

  • beautifully played!!

  • 48 people dont understand music

  • superb version of this all time classic, really well done John :) I love Sungha Jung's version too, but think this is better as it's closer to the original.

  • Comment removed

  • Beautiful! I can't seem to get passed 1:00, still working on it though.

  • John O"Connell, that was bloody great.

  • beautifully done.

  • fantastic version. to many try to over do this song, by not overdoing it you have done it perfect, ty

  • You're very, very good. Not Mason Williams, or Sungha Jung, But good.

  • Awesome!! Flawless!! super well done!! 46 ppl are retarded

  • Thumbs up if you caught the pause at 2:15

Great job John. Amazing playing. I really like the hammer effect you got at 0:57 as you begin the phrase up to the 'chorus'.

  • i went to him lastnight,i just think hes brilliant,,he played a song with his 2 backing singers,,it started of going to bed with no kiss goodnight? i loved it but cannot remember title?

  • @MrDavedoc Hi Dave, it's called Honeypot.

    Glad you enjoyed the night.

    Thanks John

  • @penrose005 hi john ,,nope its not that one,,,its starts with...going to bed and no kiss goodnight? ive tried to remember title and got everyone up wall.you played it sunday in huyton.thanks ,,kim.

  • @MrDavedoc Have a look on my site johnpig.com and listen to Honeypot which starts "Every night we turn out the light, we don't kiss each other baby, that's not right....." If it's definitely not this one I'm puzzled too.... Let me know how you get on!

  • @penrose005 john thanks alot,i wasnt looking or listning properly,,it is that song.thanks again ,,1 of my favs.kim.

  • @MrDavedoc ,thanks john..

  • did you tab this, if so where can i get them

  • Beautifully done; thank you for posting.

  • One of the first songs I ever tried to play on the guitar was Classical Gas. I've been playing guitar for 45 years now and I still can't play it.

Very nice version of the song. Thanks penrose.

  • started learning this withing a couple of months of playing guitar a few years back, but i hit a wall just before the chorus and i never got round to learning it, i'd play the part i knew at parties and stuff and i'd stop when i got so far and have to say "sorry folks, dont know the rest" but i've been playing almost 3 years now so i think im up to learning the rest, cant wait!!

This is still one of my favorite covers, you got it mastered man! i love the subtle touches you added, keep it up!!!

  • is this song easier to play with nylon strings?, because i use steel and it hurts my fingers :/

  • @ThatMetallicaGuy I would imagine it is.

  • @ThatMetallicaGuy This is just due to not playing enough. If you play your guitar enough, steel vs nylon wont make a difference in playability but instead changes the sound. That being said, this song is typically played on a classical guitar, which typically has larger spacing between the strings on the fretboard and nylon strings.

  • Very, very good.

  • Fab version...the best I've heard on You Tube other than the man himself's version. Well done John. The TAB I have used to learn it isn't the best thats for sure! Where did you learn it?

  • Great

  • wonderfull

  • The best cover I've heard so far. It takes a lot of talent to play that song this good.

  • Very nicely done...

  • Played pertty much the way it was meant to be played. Very good!

  • Perfect Version ,well done John

  • Beautiful. Thank you for sharing.

  • Awesome! John. The best and closest to original on YouTube.

I'd like to see you play it just a little faster and more aggressively, like Michael Lucarelli, but I prefer your version. You definitely have the SKILLS to do it.

  • One of the best youtube versions. Sounds like you really have the feel for it. Most people play it too fast or just all-together wrong. Good work.

  • CLASS

  • pure class johnny

  • better youtube version of this song. it sounds simply perfect. a really great great job. greetings from spain :)

  • First time I've seen this. You did great. Your guitar sounds excellent. When I sound like this version I'll be satisfied. Peace.

  • Finally, someone who plays the proper version of the high bit, I've been learning the barre chord version and I never see anyone else doing it, but it sounds the best and is actually how Mason Williams plays it. Great job, this is definitely my favourite version on youtube (:

  • Mighty fine.

  • really really good

  • :D

  • Man, am I so very jealous of you! Good work on one of the most under-rated classical guitar instrumentals of all time!!

  • wow

  • la que mejor suena de youtube sin ninuna duda!!

  • Wow. Good Job man! Gonna try to learn this off your vid.

  • No-one plays it like Mason on the Album 'Hand Made'

    Thanks for the comment,

    John

  • @penrose005 I like the original off.,"The Mason Williams Phonograph Record" even more! :D

  • i gotta admit when you first started I seriously had some doubts cause it was slower than i would expect, but once you got into the main theme it was fantastic

  • I Want the tabs!!!! 46 People must be def! because that was amazing! Guess I will have to go buy the book!

  • I love this tune. I'm gonna learn it.

  • @hairyboosh lol that's funny coming from a hairy boosh. gotta love that hair boosh.

  • wow!oneof the best versions on youtube!

  • realmente es la mejor que he encontrado aqui en youtube, felicidades no he podido igualar su tecnica..congratulations!

  • Very good! the best version on youtube by far!!

  • Very very good I enjoyed my listen

  • Man, You make this look so easy. So smooth. This is another one of my favorite you tube videos. I come back and watch often. Thanks very much for sharing this. Awesome!

  • Hi John, Big fan of your playing esp on this piece. Been playing for awhile myself and getting better; its a beast to play 'in time'.

I think the 45 dislikes are from Mason himself...... I never saw him play it once w/o fretting a couple bars.

    Cheers,

    Brett

  • buetifull1

  • Super clean, great interpretation... love it!

  • Simply great...

  • Been surfing youtube for quite some time now, listening to all the different versions out there. Have to say that this one and Tobuscus' version are my favorite. This one for it's obvious awesomeness and Toby's for it's unique character.

    Keep up the good work!

  • ITS FAKE!!! Original song is pasted over video :P

  • @TrifusDemonius how do u kno its fake

  • @rey2150 do you see " :P " sing??? it was a joke.

  • Sir ! Please send me the chords( Not Tabs ) for classical Gas in fingering form (Dots )

    clayton47@Live.com

  • Magnificent!! One of the few covers that is very close to the original in tempo and spirit. Very well done, very well indeed!!

  • Killer..........

  • Dear John,

thanks for sending me the information about the Mason Williams Songbook.

    Best regards

    wawerka

  • Great i love it

  • YOUR ARE AWSOME DUDE

  • loving that--great finger work

  • omg im tryin to learn but is so hard haha

  • I'm finally making a post after being like Lorencem and having checked it out many times and I agree that it was done to perfection partic the upstrokes at 2:04. Liverpool has the Beatles and John O'Connell.

  • Wonderful performance. Been watching this or a few year's now. I recently got the Mason Williams book to learn it. I'm a bit confused though. The guy in the 'Classical Gas Note for Note' videos on youtube says that even the tab in the Mason Williams book is wrong. John/penrose005, could you please tell me if you play the tab exactly as it is printed in the book? Thanks in advance.

  • He was not sure what to do next, but he would think of something...

  • ISBN 0-7579-9863-1

  • @penrose005

Awesome work on the guitar, you inspired me to also learn the song, although I have not used all the bar chords. This is one of the classic pieces, not bad for a guy that was a comedy writer for the Smothers Brothers!

  • i thought this song was about farting

  • Been listening to your version for almost 2 years now, on and off, still the best one out there. Great post, thanks again.

  • thankyou for that @Lorencem

  • @penrose005 same here sir. been listening to this since i found out the song existed. at first you play really slow and in tune. and everytime it kills me. because i feel as if you arent talented. then you kill it and ur amazing.

  • @Lorencem

try the tommy emmanuel version :)

  • He kinda looks like a guy from one of the bond movies.

  • @Lorencem I agree!

  • @Lorencem sungha jun one is good as well by this one good as well lol

  • @Lorencem sungha jung one is good as well, as well as john =)

  • Dear John,

this is really impressing, thanks for uploading your version to Youtube.

Maybe you can do me (and others?) a big favour and post the ISBN-Number of the Mason Williams Song Book where you got the tablature from.

The reason why I'm asking for this, is that there a quite a bunch of Mason Williams Songbooks and Sheets available and many of them are not very accurate.

But your version is, so if it's not too unconvenient for you...

    Thanks a lot

    Greetings from Germany

    Wawerka

  • @wawerka Go to the Mason Williams Classical Gas web page. On the left click on "charts and scores". All the information about the book is there. (Mason Williams, unlike most artists) actually owns the publishing rights to his own songs.

  • i swear i thot this was a video of gordon ramsay playing classical gas and got all excited by looking at the thumbnail....but well played tho!

  • Segovia would be impressed with your technique.Excellent.

  • wonderful

  • REALLY AMAZING PLAYING!

    Alia

  • UR Brilliant at this

  • everything i can get until the solo... then all the melodic sounding stuff sounds way off... maybe a tuning? idk... i suck at guitar D':

  • @Cryuss90 What "solo"?

  • @willparadigm right when they up the tempo at 0:27

  • @Cryuss90 Oh, I never thought of that as a solo, technically in this version it's all a solo. In any case it's not a tuning, the piece is played in standard tuning.

  • @willparadigm alright thanks

  • Sounds as good as the original, probably the most spot on version iv heard and seen.

Thx for posting this sir its been a pleasure to watch :)

  • Sounds as good as the original.

Hat of to u sir this is my fav track, thx for posting :)

  • I love Classical Gas, and that was awesome! You look so calm and comfortable when you play, very enjoyable to watch.

  • I don't know much about music but I love this song, and this version is better than Mason Williams' original. Amazing!

  • Thank you John for this video! Nice interpretation of the intro. Very cleanly played and true to the author's own work and intent: one person, one guitar. No bells, whistles or orchestras. I've loved this tune from its inception. Always will. Thanks again.

  • I love your commitment to the guitar.. If i could play like you, i would'nt ever drop the instrument.

  • Johnnie boy....Great version....loved the movement....best version on here without a doubt.

  • beautiful. thank you sir

  • played extemely well, jist work on the timing right in the start, otherwise its pretty much perfect, or damn near close to it

  • gives me goosebumps every time

  • Very well played!

  • very nice playing.

    Bad body posture

  • @swetor wat do u no

  • @coocher2009 what do you mean

  • Very tight playing, one of the most clean versions I've ever listened to.

  • The best vover of classical gas i listened to. Congratulations for your ecellent work.

  • wow good job i played this song in my high school talent show when i was in 7th grade i love this song

  • The Master.......

  • Awesome

  • To those of you who think John has got no emotion, let me tell you that I know him and his family and I know that John lives and breathes music and he's always striving for perfection

  • Very good, but a little mechanical. Loosen up, and make the song your own.

  • this is awesome, keep up the good work

  • Where is the emotion?

  • @JabberingJohn In is Playing

  • Love this song... I don't suppose you two have got versions we can all listen to and enjoy?

From someone who can barely hit two chords??!!

  • Comment removed

  • You can't really fault him technically, but this is probably the most uninspired version I have heard of this song. And I've been playing it for 10+ years. No offense guy, but put a little emotion into your guitar playing, and maybe some dynamics here or there. It was a little robotic almost.

  • @theguitarchris123 Most uninpsired version, eh? Well let's see you put your money where your mouth is sonny, and post your own version for us to dissect..uh huh, yeah I though so, you don't have the balls or probably can't even play it yourself.

  • Just did it if u wanna check it out, one take, so not perfect. He is technically better than me, not doubt, just not a lot of style or soul. Not trying to offend anyone.

  • @theguitarchris123 Learn to play it right note for note first then criticize. You weren't even close. Your criticism of things like "dynamics" and "emotion" are a cover for your own lack of technique. You look like a C.P. victim when you play. I was waiting for you to bite off you own tongue and swallow it.

  • @MrMZaccone hahahahahahahahahaha

  • Finally, the most definitive version of the solo version outside of William's own recording!

  • Sounds great, what an awesome song

  • You are simply incredible!! This cover is really flawless and inspiring..May I please request you to post a version of Signe (Eric Clapton). Would be greatly obliged. Thanks.

  • Great training video!!! Awesome!!!

  • Who are 42 NOBS who disliked this video?

  • i love it....congratulations!:-)

  • that was an awesome cover! amazing!

  • Inspirational! Great timing, you make it look easy :)

  • beautifull

  • perfect! I did not notice any mistakes! wonderful

  • great !!!! in my opinion the greatest version ever...it sound really perfect

  • Like Antonio Banderas

  • @UnrealK9999 wtf really? wutta gay comment.

  • Great stuff. well done. I wish I could play just that one tune on guitar, somewhere near as good, and I'd die a happy man.
