David did much the same act on Boulder's Pearl St. Mall 1980-82. When he played a cop in whiteface he was arrested for impersonating an officer! He went to Montreal, which valued its buskers and became Ringmaster of Cirque du Soleil. They passed a law to stop my not-so-tight-rope show.Mall business declined. I returned after my lawyer talked sense into the City, being a mountain lover. But the magic was gone. Now it sucks.
@bottomgunner I have it but there's just one problem. It goes over Youtube's current 10 minute time limit by around 2 minutes or so. I'd have to remove most of the "actor" entrances to get the clip to fit. There's no way to avoid it. But I'll see what I can do...
omg u guys are so noobs that u really believe that "if your reading this you cant stop.i'm mary,im 15.i have long black hair, no nose, black eyes, and a white dressif you dont send this to 5 comments in 5 minutes i wil come stend next to your bed with a nife and kill you if u do i will give u a prize " its so nooby
thanks for posting this.i dated david in the 70's if anyone knows how i can get in touch with him i have tried....does anyone have a vid to post of his dr seuss show?
csbhakti you may be able to contact him through Cirque du Soleil. Shiner has been a guest director at the Wintergarden Theatre in Berlin and the Apollo Theatre in Dusseldorf. He may still be living in Germany and you might be able to contact him at either of those places, too.
normalement les videos qui depassent les 2 minutes me font ch...., j'arrete. Cette fois ci, je ne pouvais arreter et quand les 10 minutes etaient ecoulés, je voulais que ca dure encore. Un regal ! BRAVISSIMO !!!
I saw this on a Cirque du Soleil show, he had to switcht the two guy roles and the lady stepped in front of the gun. HILARIOUS! If someone posted that, could they please tell me?
No, I wish I did, all shows I've seen were on television. As for DVD's I've seen a whole collection which I think was complete of their shows at a Barnes and Nobles. :P My fave clowns would be this guy and the Varekai clowns, don't remember their names, and also the guy who probably isn't a clown but has that funny act with the lightbulb guy in Varekai. Why? Mainly I remember those the most, but they were the funniest still, to me at least, of those seen since on youtube.
I've only seen the bits here on youtube for Quidam sadly, it looks quite interesting. And no we didn't tape any of them, again sadly, especially since Varekai was on twice in a row and on again the next day. How dumb was that? I guess we were too caught up in just watching it.
Oh, that was him? Guess I didn't recognize him without the Varekai hairdo. HA. Anywho, there's not enough of Quidam on here to know which is my favorite, I like all the acts of all the shows. They're that cool! I wouldn't mind being in Varekai with the cool "bamboo forest" just one of those guys in the background.
Thanks for posting the video! David Shiner is fantastic. He did a version of this routine as part of "Fool Moon", the play he starred in with Bill Irwin. Shiner and Irwin won special Tony Awards for "Fool Moon".
I've never had the opportunity to see Cirque du Soleil perform other than briefly on TV.
David Shiner and Bill Irwin created the two-man, wordless show "Fool Moon". It lasts approximately two hours. Audience members were recruited for several sketches, including one like the silent movie in the video clip. Unlike the clip, Bill Irwin was involved in the silent movie sketch in "Fool Moon". The show ran from 1992-1999. I was very fortunate to see it on Broadway in December, 1998.
ricosalomar: If you're referring to the utube clip, you're correct. If you're referring to the December, 1998, Broadway production of "Full Moon" I saw, you're not correct.
Sorry to self-reply, but I thought I'd clear up another thing.
The show did not run from 1992-1999.
Fool Moon opened on Broadway at the Richard Rogers Theater at the beginning of '93 and ran for approx. 9 months. Then the show had a limited run at the Doolitle in LA in '94 (that's when this Tonight Show segment was taped).
Fool moon then did limited runs in Europe, SF and Seattle over the next few years, including limited holiday runs at the Ambassador on Broadway, and the Brooks-Atkinson.
Even though you dont agree with me, Ben Brantley of the New York Times does. His column published on November 23, 1998, entitled THEATER REVIEW: Sanity Restored in a Fun House, Brantley reviews Fool Moon. His review states: For the show's penultimate sequence, Mr. Shiner plays silent movie director (with Mr. Irwin kibitzing) to four audience recruits, and somehow their self-consciousness and anxiety is shaped into charming theater, something with its own rhythms and comic form.
Heaven forbid, I wrote Broadway when I should have written off-Broadway (Brooks Atkinson Theater). PLEASE read Brantley's review. Rather than being preoccupied with "Fool Moon", I'm doing pediatric clinicals and have spent the last five days trying to help a 20 month old child and her family deal with her terminal illness, and the child's death this morning. Arguing about what happened when in "Fool Moon" and your insistence that you are correct seems trivial in the grand scheme of things.
I've seen this same act in the latest production of Quidam, obviously with another clown

Sorry to be a stickler, but I saw every performance of Fool Moon, all 3 runs on Broadway, in LA, 2 runs in SF, Seattle, Vienna and Munich.
Every single performance.
Bill was not involved in 'Cinema'. It was a David solo, just as 'Harlequin and Pantelone' was a Bill solo.
You are probably thinking of 'Big Night Out', where Dave takes the girl on a date, and Bill is the waiter.

Seriously, dude.
I was on stage EVERY TIME FOOL MOON WAS PERFORMED, ok?
I recognize that you really, really want to be right about this, but you are not.
'Cinema' was a solo piece.
