there's no way this game is marketed to children! There are no commercials about it on tv (that I've seen) and i personally never even knew what the games were about before I was about 13. What's this about Resident Evil having never been racist? If I recall correctly, the only non-White characters to have made it through an entire game alive are Ada Wong (conveniently Asian, from a Japanese developer) and Carlos Oliveira - and only Ada has even been mentioned in the ten or so years between Raccoon City and Kijuju.
Carlos also happened to fit the same 'arrogant, oversexed Hispanic male' stereotype that Luis did in RE4.
There's no overt, intentional racism in RE5; it merely showcases the culturally-insensitive, blinkered view of so much other Japanese media. Capcom aren't saying "You should kill all black people!", but without realising, they're stripping the dark-skinned Africans of the humanity they deserve as victims of Umbrella. Even Sheva and Josh show no remorse or regret in killing their countrymen.
The only dark-skinned character not shown to be a Majini is the aggressive, chauvinistic soldier who frisks Sheva at the start.
And yes, the tone of the skin IS important. Look at Sheva's design. She's so light-skinned you actually can't tell she's ethnically different from Chris is some scenes. Her hair is relaxed, and she lacks any real Negroid features. In times of slavery, the "most beautiful" slave would be the one who most resembled a Caucasian woman; the "Massa's daughter".
Capcom have used common ideals of beauty to illustrate who's good and who's bad; unfortunately, this has meant that they've taken a "Massa's daughter" approach with Sheva. Which is bad because Black women are already grossly underrepresented in games. They haven't designed a strong, African woman - they've just given a standard-issue floppy Resident Evil chick an all-over tan and a vague ESL accent.

RE 5 was more graphic I mean Chris literaaly squashed people's heads. and I found that I was more reluctant to kill these new infected for some reason. I don't know why! maybe I'm a racist but in this game the african people had been taken advantage of. but in RE 4 saddler had a cult and...I dunno I just hated RE 5.

there's no way this game is marketed to children! There are no commercials about it on tv (that I've seen) and i personally never even knew what the games were about before I was about 13. I bought RE4 when I was 14; and i needed one of my parents to tell them it was all right for me to buy it. And also, in my opinion, I don't think people who know nothing about the game should be complaining; we play it because we enjoy it, not because it's about killing AFRICANS in AFRICA =_=

This young woman is very intuitive. It's Africa, the chosen setting, where blacks are everywhere. We might ask Capcom why they chose this country for the new game, but I think maybe they wanted to introduce a new ethnic character to the series and the rest, as they say, is history. What's this about Resident Evil having never been racist? If I recall correctly, the only non-White characters to have made it through an entire game alive are Ada Wong (conveniently Asian, from a Japanese developer) and Carlos Oliveira - and only Ada has even been mentioned in the ten or so years between Raccoon City and Kijuju.
Carlos also happened to fit the same 'arrogant, oversexed Hispanic male' stereotype that Luis did in RE4.

There's no overt, intentional racism in RE5; it merely showcases the culturally-insensitive, blinkered view of so much other Japanese media. Capcom aren't saying "You should kill all black people!", but without realising, they're stripping the dark-skinned Africans of the humanity they deserve as victims of Umbrella. Even Sheva and Josh show no remorse or regret in killing their countrymen.

The only dark-skinned character not shown to be a Majini is the aggressive, chauvinistic soldier who frisks Sheva at the start.
And yes, the tone of the skin IS important. Look at Sheva's design. She's so light-skinned you actually can't tell she's ethnically different from Chris is some scenes. Her hair is relaxed, and she lacks any real Negroid features. In times of slavery, the "most beautiful" slave would be the one who most resembled a Caucasian woman; the "Massa's daughter".

Capcom have used common ideals of beauty to illustrate who's good and who's bad; unfortunately, this has meant that they've taken a "Massa's daughter" approach with Sheva. Which is bad because Black women are already grossly underrepresented in games. They haven't designed a strong, African woman - they've just given a standard-issue floppy Resident Evil chick an all-over tan and a vague ESL accent.
