Thanks for posting. I live in the Chicago area for my first 23 years, worked in the Loop and remember, fondly, the Green River. It's my favorite color! HAPPY SAINT PATRICKS DAY TO ALL!
I'm from Chicago. Here, St. Patrick's day is in no way a Catholic or Irish only holiday. In Chicago, everybody's Irish on Saint Patrick's day. All people celebrate-it's one big celebration and everybody is welcome.
I've read the discussions bout the catholic holiday or not. Im Irish and I just say: It's a holiday, so enjoy it, doesnt matter where you come from or what religion you have. It might be an irish tradition, but know it's celebrated all around the world, so just enjoy it and start a party ;-)
OMG its a holiday can it just not be left at that ... i love it ... i love the way EVERYONE can enjoy our history our culture and irish language! i love the fact that its somthing that people from all age groups can enjoy ! but most of all i love the fact that its a excuse to get really reallly drunk lol whoop whoop T.A.L! :)
they dye the chicago river green every saint patrick's day because of the high population of irish in chicago-it has been a tradition for years, and everybody expects it
Only to those so close-minded that they think everyone with Irish blood or interest is Catholic. St. Patrick was Christian before there was a difference. It's culture, not religion. Not in the US.
Originally the holiday was a chatholic holiday but since the Irish population spread into different cultures and different religons it became a celebration of Ireland since it is really the only Irish holiday celebrated through out the world. So it is plain simple that now St. Patty's day is not well known for it's religous aspect but more of it's celebration of Ireland. If you can't understand that then well sir you might as well be the 12 year old.
Very true but most people do not think of it like that any more especially since it hasn't been a religous in areas like America. Sure in the begining I bet alot of people said that but now it is just clean fun :-) with a bit of histroy of course. I am not Chatholic at all but I still celebrate the holiday becaus eit gives me a chance to celebrate my heratage especially since there are no specific holidays pointed torwards the irish that doens't have a religous holiday...
I believe people can believe what ever they want. it was giving power to the Catholic church because that is how it originated but we have modified it in the states so that it is a mere celebration. descendants of that culture can remember and think about their parents, grandparent lives in Ireland that is how I think of it. If you think of it as giving the church power let it u have as good of a reason as I do so :-)
Okay so the catholic church doesn't have the best record but they do control most of the population. Since St. Pattys has been americanized I do not think it has anything to do with religon at the moment. and as I said before u have as good as reasons as I do to belive what you belive but I celebrate St. Patricks day with a wide smile and a open heart that is just what the holiday has become to me not some celebration trying to convert me to being a Chatholic
It seems like you just want to fight, I have already heard this but I sitll stand by my reasons of celebrating this holiday. It doesn't mean that one day I will be Catholic or anything else the holiday has been americanized and although catholics do have the right to make their own little celebration so do people who are not.
Fucking Americans. Hate them.

I can understand that it is for Catholics only. It gives Catholics politicians a little more power if they can sell the holiday to everyone.

You celebrate this holiday, and it gives power to Catholic politicians, and the Catholic church.
Look what the church has done with it's power so far.

Not sure what you mean. In the US, the Catholic church has used it's power to sexually molest many, many little boys. Who knows what else.

Here is a nice little thing for Catholics to celebrate on IRA day (St.Patrick's Day).
About Pol Pot (the butcher from Cambodia) '...He was trained at a private Catholic institution by the Jesuit; just like Adolf Hitler.'

Okay well how about you go and cry abou that while us adults worry about real situations that are happening now!

Gabzerelli5 2 years ago
