  • I live close XD

  • Wasnt this place featured in the movie Into the wild?

  • /watch?v=jBYl2f_o5VU

  • Americas shame, the place that people go when the USA abandoned them. This video is out of date...This is the new wall street grave yard

  • @Redpilldown You sound like a jealous brit.

  • @ManOfWealthnTaste Yes I am a Brit but why would I be jealous? I live in a four bedroom house with a lovely garden.

These poor people have a tin box, slabs and sand ….. It is disgusting that a country with so much wealth pretends that these people do not exist or shuns them because of their impoverishment.

What makes me lol is that America is supposedly a Christian country……….what a farce.

  • @Redpilldown Those people choose to live there. Its not like they had nowhere else to go. Their retirees so they probably came from good homes & had good jobs. Whats attractive about Slab city is its free with plenty of sunshine- neither of which can be found in the UK.

  • SLOB CITY ?

  • SLAB CITY USA ! TWO HAGS FOR EVERYYYYY GUY !!!

  • I need to vacation there, I like the painted mountain, reminds me of a movie, about a kid that lived in Alaska in a bus. He ate some weird plants, got the runs and died, it was a good movie.

  • Still better then living in china.

  • *made a beautiful..piece of shit out of it..* lol

  • Ah! Mooseturd Pie! That's from an old New Utah Phillips story about working on the railroad way back in the Great Depression, I think. He spoke of "Gandy Dancers" who would jump up and down on the boards to set the ties in. But the pie is about the rotation of cooks. If you didn't like the food, you became the cook. So when served mooseturd pie he yelled "My God, it's Mooseturd Pie! It's good though...." New Utah Phillips was many times elected King of the Hoboes. Champion story teller.

  • Well, now that the mainstream has gotten wind of this place, you can bet that it'll be closing down very soon. Once the masses find out about something good, it's always destroyed. Every goofy teenager with a crush on Emile Hirsch is gonna be out there, their parents will raise hell, and it's all over. No more peace and quiet. No more free.

If I ever found a place where I could get away from society, I'd never tell society where I was.

  • "Would you like to eat one?"

    "Noo.. no I'm alright"

    "Are ye scared?"

    "..yeeh.."

  • @skitforbrains Well then sir, why don't you take your delicate self off to somewhere safer? Leave people alone.

  • @deaddoc I agee!

  • Where do the tent and car campers use the bathroom?

  • most of the big RVs are way bigger than a standard UK flat!

  • This "city" is occupied by a bunch of brain dead hippies. Kids - this is what happens to you when you smoke too much pot.

  • @biscuitfarmer Really? I think you assume to much. Almost all are retired RV'er. People who live in their RV's year round for the economy and freedom it brings. Slab City's population swells in the winter with way less staying year round. There are no camping or parking fees is the biggest attraction.

  • @biscuitfarmer oo yeahh

  • @biscuitfarmer - if you had a brain that worked you'd realise this is the life. dunno if i'd personally be into the military firing range next door (? so says the tv), but the model of having a movable home and places to park it, that is way more sane than most of the kinds of urban and living areas that exist. only thing better or on a similar par is proper houses like earth-building and off-the-grid sustainable with green roofs etc.

  • Is there any kind of sewer?

  • @chiconian49 - if they have the funds / materials they should put in compost toilets, then after 1-3 years you get fertiliser, which the desert can probably do with.

  • I sometimes wonder about our entire way of living..

I'm becoming more socialist, perhaps. The high cost of living (oil, taxes, hell-everything).

    Forget about wealth.

I believe that the people/government should own the land - NOT individuals. The water ? same thing..

Now, paying for its delivery and its cleanliness - that is a different thing.

  • so where do they get water? and is this place still there?

  • Comment removed

  • @BeingNobody1Reply956 Yes this place is still here. Safest place to be right now. When everything crashes it is best to be close to the ground. Fall short. Hurt way less. Good advice.

  • @BeingNobody1956 yeah the place is still here. Water comes from a few sources. Two in town. Niland, CA. The gas station and a grocery store called Mae's. There is also a local guy and some pull their water from the canal covertly and sterilize using reverse osmosis and UV.

  • i love these independent people i envy them

  • @dragonflychainsaw come join us. All it takes is an ability to want what you need and be grateful for what you receive and be a good person. Most people can't be what they aren't on a consistent basis. So it is a self winnowing system, so to speak

  • i am glad to see that people want to live like that

  • @dragonflychainsaw I wouldn't say "want" is the proper term. Do you think if someone told me at age 26 that twenty years from now I would be living here? I would have told them they needed to slow down. That they were taking wayyy too much of something. Cause that would never happen. Rest assured dragonflychainsaw this little economic hiccup that we are experiencing will get exponentially worse from here on out.

  • holy sh!+! its richard dreyfuss! 3:39

  • @BADSYNE funny how that has changed over the years. For awhile it was kieffer sutherland

  • I see there are also more documentaries. Would like to visit this place someday, in an RV or something. :) Too bad I don't presently have one.

  • This documentary left out the weird dinosaurs revived by the locals also.

  • @onlocationkat "revived dinosaurs"??

  • Comment removed

  • @onlocationkat can't have dinosaurs. I keep telling people that and they just don't get it. The reason the dinosaurs are gone in the first place for the most part is that the gravity of the planet was a lot less back then so the plants and everything grew big. Then a change happened and alot of things found themselves flat on their sides for no reason at all and they couldn't move.

  • This is amazing and bizarre, and should be documented in a feature film, not just cartoons and video clips. A truly American and Californian landmark, this Sal City and the Salvation Mountain, should be protected as an official national treasure. Something as quirky as this place has to be remembered for centuries to come. Since it;s old base land, have some kind of salvation army like crew come in and clean up the Salton Sea are and revive the little town as a state park with its mountain!

  • @onlocationkat Exact wrong direction for things to go. Once you get government bureaucracies involved, the whole thing will fall apart. The present residents will become "undesirables" with no right to be squatting at a state park and other religious groups will start foisting their symbols up to compete with "Salvation Mountain."

  • HAHA MY NANA IS SO AWESOME IN-LIFE

  • I wish there was a self sufficient city but...modern and not filled with red necks lol.

  • @JonnyTommyGuns self sufficient city is oxymoronic, moran. The whole purpose of "off the grid" living is to get away from cities that do not advocate self sufficiency.

  • @HappyHooker83 nowhere near "city" more like self-regulating homeless collective

  • rednecks lol

  • The place is dead now :(

  • @burnmehdown214

No it's not, I was just there last week, there are still lots of old trailers, RV's and people there.

  • @GTVAlfaMan Well it depends on the time of the year. Most of the year, it's pretty empty

  • @burnmehdown214 for someone who probably got burned out. I would have to agree that the place is dead to you

  • @WayneSMT -_- *facepalm* I'm not even gonna tell you how fuckin' dumb that is.

  • 07:55 bunch of buttholes lmao lol i love her she reminds me of my drunk grandma xoxox

  • @whatweshouldknow LOL SHE ACTUALLY IN MY GRANDMOTHER AWESOME SHE'S A STAR

  • Retards and assholes ?

Is that what you think of our "government" ??

Maybe they think that of you, so where are we ?

    Nowhere, excect animosity-city.

  • My "you" must refer to some conservative.

Please read all of what I write.

  • The planet should not be considered as a commodity but as a natural god given right. :) Long live squatters.

  • The sense of community is definately missing. You resign yourself to live amongst others in a twisted little apartment complex with all the chatter noise and clanging that comes with urban life. For every scream, for every bang on the wall I want to answer with my .357, makes you wish you COULD get away from it all.

  • @NoiseMostBeautiful sense of community is based upon perspective. Others would strongly disagree with you. Community begins with the self first.

  • @WayneSMT agree, I miss my homestead, the apartment which I now reside in (which I was refering to above) seems to sap all sense of self I associated with being at home that I had before. Where you reside adds to your character in a dynamic way. While community does originate with you, connection to your residing suroundings is a part of you and influences how others in that collection are viewed and how you view them. This would be a great topic for a class, thanks for your input.

  • Reminds me of Fallout: New Vegas

  • Strongly disagree !

Exactly what do you have against our government ?

    "they failed"

    "I can do it better"

    male bovine feces !

  • @amsnare Nothing but retards and self serving assholes in "Our Government" , thats what I have against it .

  • @amsnare pretty simple. the way of life that I used to live has failed gloriously for millions upon millions. Our government has does the same thing over and over again different ways and packaging it up in pretty colors and they have been selling it to "Us" that's right me and you. I trusted em once. Never again. -- Do as you will. And via con deos

  • Hey - Another year has passed. Looks like this season is shaping up quite nicely. Over at the Freedom Cafe right now. Quite nice. Johnny Cash on the speakers. Dogs at the feet. Does it get any better?. Warren339 I don't have any idea what you are talking about. Just get clicking noises when I read your post.

  • freedom is not free and anyone putting stuff on the web including me is just asking for hararrssment from the hienina's of this world so expect the ankle biting little bastards YOU GREAT BIG LION'S! You may need some lunch one day! And hey they are so stuipid when it comes they won't even know what hit them!

  • Real People Living Real Lives

  • im going here this winter!!!

  • Can I come visit and be made welcome by the slabbers?

  • Nice video. I hope to visit the slab City this December.

  • the pure simple freedom and worrieless life of this place and what soome have done to get there is truely amazing my hat is off to you who go out on life on your own i only wish i could do the same

  • looks like a complete shit hole. salvation mountain is cool though :)

  • Mosquito's in the desert?

I'm a Northern guy, can someone tell me if this is correct or not. Or was the old guy just a little bit too 'sun baked'?

  • @MrTHREEDOGKNIGHT If there is water you will have skeeters

  • The marine base was torn down in the 40's. Teens used to go out there from Niland and Calipat to go roller skating. Those that first started living out there were having a hard time making ends meet and figured their meager income would better serve their families if it went towards the basics (food) rather than keeping up with city life. Students received their education and given every opportunity to get out. Realize the current residents do not represent the spirit of the original residents.

  • I spent about a month right by slab city in 2001 when I was in the Marine Corps. It's a crazy place, I've never been anywhere like it before or since.

  • Palm Springs,Ca in the summer LOL! Instant death.

  • "beautiful piece of shit"

  • sure I will do some bmx there! perfect for it

  • Want real folks???? Visit the Slabs... I hate to say that because I want it to remain as is, man governing themselves within a peaceful society. I was there this weekend to visit Leonard, if you are a stranger you will have an eye kept on you just as the did me, they don't want riff raff, they just want to live within their country that has let them and us all down. May god bless them all, see you soon.

  • thats 53 degrees celsius lol...

  • This place reminds me of my son that recently passed away....I lived there when he was a baby, heres a video.

  • I hope this place never changes.I intend to spend some winters there soon.

  • where can i see some full documentary about slab city

  • I guess it's a good thing to know there's a place like this out there ??

  • This video is a fascinating. I never heard of Slab City before so I find it really interesting. The graffiti is amazing. I'm all for happiness for anyone who can find it and this place seems to have lots for everyone.

  • jamesc, No there isn't a lot of crime -- they largely police themselves, but the City is also broken down into various communities. For example, all the single women live next to each other, all the families (yes, there are kids there) live near one another, and the seniors are all together for the most part. The only real problem they seem to have is with the families that won't send their kids to school and don't home school either. They boot out the troublemakers on their own.

  • I met that lady on sunday ha queen of the slabs

  • Sounds like a very interesting place! I drove through that area many years but don't remember Slab City. When was the military base torn down?

  • Does anyone know if there is a lot of crime that takes place at slab city?

  • what crime? it's a bunch of old people! haha

  • wow...

  • Comment removed

  • looks incredible...

  • pshchosolodiver YOUR LOL at him? They say no one knows how ignorant (uneducated) you are until you open your mouth and tell everyone. If you heard the man say 53 degrees, you should have heard his accent, which is British. When he said degrees, he's NOT saying 53 fahrenheit but 53 cententigrade. That's 127 faherinheit, LOL ,Homer. ahuh!

  • @sailingsolar Who the hell uses cententigrade as a temperature measurement? It is the USA and he should be using Fahrenheit like everyone else.

  • Comment removed

  • @psychosolodiver - "who the hell"?? Only 96% of the world's populaiton, that's who the hell! Yes the US is only 4% of the world's population, and Australia is just as big but with a BOOMING economy, and the Aussie dollar is worth $US1.10 of the trashed US dollars.

The US is fighting a Civil War with itself, it has the biggest gap ever between haves and have-nots, and it's a collapsing empire.

  • @hautpre Fighting a civil war with itself? You could say that. But the real dynamics are not very well understood. Unions fight with Corporations, Democrats with Republicans, both used various forms of immigration legal and illegal to affect elections while the forces of greed and power play all along the bar. The result is a system that cannot sustain itself or agree, with more clashes of culture, language, political and religious belief than anywhere in the world. Cont;

  • @deaddoc Just the cost of attempting to regulate that is all alone breaking the local and national budgets. Everyone and group is out for themselves alone and will play any card (read race, ethnic, or sexual) to gain advantage. The parasites far outnumber the host's ability to support them, so it is a sort of cannibalism.

Don't agree about the larges gap ever between haves and have-nots, I can think of a lot of bigger gaps in history but the size of the two is probably something new

  • @deaddoc In searching the various posts and links regarding Slab City I found on blog where the situation in the lower Imperial Valley was described; "If you are white, you will be pulled over, made to stand in the sun with no shade, while illegals are waved by (apparently in huge numbers). They also mentioned the large water caches being left along the roads and trails for the illegals. This has to be known by authorities. My guess is that they end up.....

  • @deaddoc .... in the lower San Joaquin Valley west of Fresno, where the region has become a near third world enclave where the state seems to have forgotten to look. My mother in law used to own some land in that area. The state of California seems to have completely abandoned it.

  • Comment removed

  • @psychosolodiver

... which is kind of appropriate given the US is the ONLY country in the world which still uses the BRITISH IMPERIAL measurement system - the measurement system of a collapsed empire, eh?

Still congratulating yourselves on "defeating" mad King George, but you still use the British Imperial system!

  • @hautpre The British stole the so called Imperial measurement system from the Irish. Now they measure with a system invented by Frogs!

  • @sailingsolar - you're quite right to castigate psychosolodiver, but i'm afraid you;re wrong about the accent - I thought almost all USAmericans could recognise an AUSSIE accent by now - after all, virtually ALL the best actors are AUSTRALIAN!

This short documentary was made by the brilliant Australian Broadcasting Corporation, producers of world's best television and radio content.

You can watch and listen online at abc.net.au.

  • @hautpre no, americans frequently mistakenly think an Aussie accent is a brit accent

  • I lived there for a few years..... I stayed in the summer but, lol I rented in twn....cause I had a baby then

  • LOL At 4:03 "In the Summer, the slab is a furnace - up to 53 degrees."

Ha! That's still pretty damn cold.

  • i live in a town called brawley, im like 20 minutes away from there, that places is prety awesome, theres like an old dried up olimpic pool that i go skate sometimes. Theres some nice people out there

  • The Real Live American Dream!

  • hahaha 6:12 "And I made a beautiful piece of shit out of it."

  • hahahaha

  • I love that lady! She's just gonna have fun with whatever she's doing at the moment, especially if it involves making "a beautiful piece of shit."

  • @tinylittlesun "turned it into art?" "yes"

  • keep in mind, some of us 'old fuckers' got our sore knees, from kicking young asses ... this is a very well-done video, more accurate, than most accounts ... Slab City is whatever you care to make of it ... when I first arrived, I parked my small RV rig near some decent-looking rigs, and met some very wonderful people ... and, the dirtbags don't come anywhere near my campsite, I wonder why ?

  • @imagereaper hahah well said!

  • i can tolerate the evil of the machine/system to which modern civilizations are attached, mainly because it means unfettered access to modern plumbing. =)

  • damn straight crazy bible thumpeers

  • I have been to slab city and i think it is a place for people who do wayyyy to many drugs

  • I've been here. It would scare most people, but I loved visiting.

  • Any way a person can adopt one of those mobile homes? Or do I have to buy a van?

  • When you get here there will be a place for you. Just kinda works out that way.

  • lol cool

  • This idea is great and all but 2 things....

1... this slab city looks like its only white people friendly :/

2... what happens when living in this kinda setup becomes more popular and then the government comes and says LEAVE OR PAY FINES OR GET ARRESTED!!

or hell even if they start tring to charge rent or sell the land.

  • Me and my brother used to go their to visit our grandparents and i will never forget the special smell and freedom of being there. We used to drive the dune bugy around and kill rattlesnakes and scorpians. They have natural what looks like war treanches and fox holes .

  • that wasn't freedom you were smelling.

  • This was a pretty good video. Not to many videos out there that really give you a feel for Slab City. Everything is about Salvation Mountain. Slab City is about the People, not the Place.

  • i wanna skate slab city so bad

  • talk to Justin, he built the skate park

  • What kind of people live in Slab City? Are they mostly ignorant hicks that would vote for McCain, or are they mostly smart Obama supporters?

  • What the fuck kind of question is that?

The people in Slab City are those who have who hope for freedom from the American government, many are ex-hippies which consist of radical libertarian socialists.

BOTH McCain and Obama are conservative, capitalist candidates who advocate the continuance of the oppressive, exploitative and hierarchical police state that we live in.

The people that live in direct and participatory consensus democracy, therefore they decide on decisions, not rulers.

  • The residents of Slab City are going to have a choice of either McCain or Obama to vote for, or else not vote at all. Well okay some might throw their votes away on Nader or some other bozo but they won't count for anything.

It is a reasonable question to ask if they are mostly stupid McCain supporters (making it an ugly place to live or visit in their climate of hate and fear) or mostly Obama supporters (hope and change instead of hate and fear).

    Which is it?

  • As former Obama supporter, I am ashamed to see it's campaign degrade to people voting based off "McCain supporters (making it an ugly place to live or visit in their climate of hate and fear) or mostly Obama supporters (hope and change instead of hate and fear)."

I understand that McCain is less horrible than Obama, though both who will stay at war and continue the privatization of tyranny, through their supposed representative democracies.

What I'm saying is, I'm beyond Obama.

  • Forcing someone to pick criminal 1 or 2 is not freedom, it's trickery (Plurium Interrogationum).

"Does your mother know that you're a murderer yet?"

To answer yes or no is unfair, the system needs rethinking.

US representative electoral democracy is something along the lines of "Chose one of the following: conservative capitalist or ultra conservative capitalist" -- what if you want freedom from exploitation and state oppression, it would be unfair (fascist) to pick a capitalist.

  • Unfortunately we all have to deal with reality, and however much the system sucks and you'd like to see it work differently doesn't change that. We all have choices, which include not making a choice at all, or throwing our choice away. No amount of anger and frustration at the system is going to alter the range of choices you have. You can withdraw and be apathetic if you want, or deal more effectively with reality by making the smartest choice possible. So how about answering my question?

  • Apathy!? Apathy is not attempting to change anything, and going alone with this warmongering system!

We have no true choice, just options (usually A or B).

I AM dealing with reality, I want liberty -- it's not some crazy idea.

Oh, and I answered your question.

  • No we don't have to deal with reality that others create. I create my own reality and the powers that be are not very much apart of that reality. I feel that I can do better on my own. I take and will accept NO assistance from the feds in anyway shape or form. The way I see it. The federal government had one job and one job only. To protect my interests, your interests, all of our interests. They failed. I can do better myself. Arrgh

    Hiyer - Slab City

  • @WayneSMT Nobody creates reality. Reality is existence. You can have a perception of reality, and so can others. But reality is the constant. It's the same for everybody.

The fact is that these people do nothing for society. They remove themselves from the population, and as a result have no money, no access to drinking water, no access to medical facilities, or any prosperity to speak of. They will die meaningless lives.

  • @Alpha1Bravo1Charlie1 who he fuck are you to tell people whats right and whats wrong ? It's their choice, everything is not so black and white !

  • @droptheleash0 I'm not saying they are doing the wrong thing. They might have a great time out there, good for them. But they're going to live short, malnourished, uneducated, struggling lives when they needn't.

Society works. Their version of an oasis in the middle of the desert is nothing but a poverty stricken hole. Many African people would kill for the opportunity to live in a country as great as the USA, and these people are throwing opportunity into the wind. It's disgusting to watch.

  • @Alpha1Bravo1Charlie1 yeah I had a bit of an outburst there, but thanks for the thoughtful reply. I understand your point, and for all I know that could be true for many of them, but I believe for many society doesn't work. The human existence isn't simply to live a capitalist lifestyle and gain as much prosperity as possible, and I don't think you can generalise everyone who choses not to follow that as being uneducated, malnourished and living unfullfilled lives

  • @Alpha1Bravo1Charlie1 Narrow minds like to generalize, There is a great diversity of people out there, Leonard Knight is known world wide As is Builder Bill, These people are not throwing opportunity away, They have ether chosen to be there or are forced there by finances.

It would be better for you to just say its not my way of life rather than make yourself a judge of things you know nothing about. At least they know they most likely wont Die from being run over by a bus.

  • @SPAMkiller2010 What's that supposed to mean? Society kills people? Guess again champ. Society has doubled the life expectancy of humanity in the last hundred years.

This is a perfect example of what I'm talking about. Arguments to the contrary are ridiculous. Besides, as I said before, my issue with these kind of people are that they're making the wrong choice. It's all well and good to say it's their choice to make, fine. But it's the wrong one nonetheless.

  • @Alpha1Bravo1Charlie1 It's wrong because you say it is and who might you be GOD? go back to your foxhole solider

  • @wow06 As you correctly stated, I am a soldier, and when I go back to my foxhole It's so that men and women can live lives that they can't live anywhere else. It's for opportunity, for freedom and for quality of life. It's not for wasted opportunities.

  • @WayneSMT "No we don't have to deal with reality that others create. Arrgh

Hiyer - Slab City" - Awesome. I like these people

  • @WayneSMT better than the "Hills have eyes" folks on the Mesa. They seem really cool and just tired of the system and keeping up with the joneses.

  • apathy may be giving in to your political reality.. which is not everyones 'reality'. . some are living their own reality non politically with a passion not apathy..

  • @RepublicanValuesLOL

What an ignorant ass!!! The people who live there are obviously and luckily nothing like yourself!

  • lenord , insane wayne r.i.p., builder bill all the slabers, what a truly unique place in America, and something to see in these times of uncertity. love it there

    See you slabbers there! :]

  • there's something delightfully ironic about a bunch of old people going off to retire in a place called "slab city."

  • we'd be nothing, if not for mental illness - it drives the workaholics, inspires the artists, and makes for our greatest stories

  • Does anyone happen to know if there is a Verizon cell tower within range of Slab City? I could telecommute if there is, with my Verizon cell modem!

  • yes there is. I am using it right now
