  • At the beginning of this video they clearly stated that the myth was on a hot day. It is obvious that the weather is less that hot.

  • they said that its gonna be cold -.- in finland cold means -20 - -30

  • in the beginning of the video, adam has a full head of hair. During the tests, he is bald. And he has hair again at the end of the video.. O.o

  • also a smaller car has the same window size as those huge-suvs but a lot less w8.

  • they need to switch cars, maybe the other car is better on gas

  • drag is a factor on any moving particle faggots...

  • i cant believe the highest comment on here is one that is hating on these guys... you must remember they do obtain a

PhD in Physics..not sure what kind but it is one of the hardest to earn..yes, even harder than a brain surgeon.....physics and calculus got us to the moon IDIOTS..

  • Sir, you host a fail show !

  • Same car, different color.....

  • they need to do this at 60-70 mph, which is where the "myth" is applied (nobody claims that ac is more efficient around town or even @ 45 mph), and where the wind drag would be a bigger factor. They also needed to do two runs with the exact same vehicle, and with the cruise control set. Then maybe we can talk about conclusions. They haven't come close to busting any myths here.

oh yeah, and as somebody else mentioned, who ever said anything about "full blast" being part of this "myth?"

  • They should have used the same vehicle for each test at around 60 MPH

  • Key word was FULLBLAST

  • Well Jamie weighs alot more than adam also because adam is alot younger he probably drove fast which helps the millage for some reason.

  • i am surprised at the mythbuster crew, they didnt test the 60-70mph range.

  • Its fucking obvious that a/c is the worst thing for your fuel consumption, but it turns out that in the united states of corn you need a TV show to prove that. Coolio.

  • IMO they should have run the test a second time but reversed (AC car with windows open & windows car with AC) This way if the white car ran longer, it means it was just made better, and the vehicles are not equal.

  • What collection and episode is this plz reply

  • what season and what is the episode called? plz reply seriously

  • I didn't see that they tested the fuel efficiency of both vehicles to be the same before making a conclusion. This was done very sloppy, with plenty of room for error. They should have used the same vehicle for both tests.

  • @jadedhawk They were both the same make and model (Ford Expeditions) who cares?

  • @jadedhawk they did, you only saw part of it. Same car, they made sure the same amount of weight was in both and everything

  • spoiler busted window wins

  • this debate totally depends on speed. drag increases exponentially with wind speed. a/c doesn't.

  • 0:01

  • I would have been interested to see the same test done again, but this time swap things around so that the car with it's windows down in the first test wound them up and turned on the ac and visa versa.

  • How do we know that the two cars had the exact same fuel efficiency to start with?

  • What's more fuel efficient----driving half naked or fully clothed?

  • hmm... needs more c4!

  • One of the major car magazines (Motor Trend or C/D, can't remember off hand) ran the same test and got the same results. Running the AC uses quite a bit more gas than running with windows open.

  • umm, who gives a crap? a/c, window open, whatthefuckever.

  • regardless...it seems kinda obvious about the gas thing...the A/C uses power while leaving the windows open doesn't use power.

What was the point of this...? Love Mythbusters though

  • First of all to conduct this myth, they should have used the same car for both test.....it doesn't matter if the car is the same model, year, and has teh same posted gas milage all engines use gas differently.

  • Who drives 45mph on a road trip when you can drive 65mph. 85mph if you have a radar detector. 95+ mph if you have a radar jammer.

  • @pumpkinpie78 too bad cops are allowed to guess your speed and use that to write you a ticket if they are radar certified :/

  • @ThePositiveDay Interesting, I didn't know that. In the state that I live in, if you know the laws and the judicial system well enough, you can get away with speeding even if you were clocked by radar. But usually, they'll wouldn't even give you a ticket as long as you weren't doing something insanely fast that might endanger other people.

  • @pumpkinpie78 radar jammer?

  • What about comfort. Who cares about fuel efficiency if i am hot i am going to run the ac goobers.

  • That test left out a lot. One of the biggest causes was probably the difference between the vehicles. They should have either used one car for the test under both conditions. They also could have repeated the test but reversed the conditions. If the computer said that the effect was minimal, then it's more likely that the truck with the windows down ran much more efficient. So if they'd run it opposite, the same car would have run 30 more laps then the other.

  • PRESS F5 TO SKIP COMMERIALS

  • Well yeah its a proven fact that the ac works more efficient on freeways at higher speeds like 70-75mph, at lower speeds more gas is going to be a waste cause its more load on the engine and more gas so at lower speeds windows down.

  • Now if only they could harness the cooling power of having your window down without having the side effect of looking poor!

  • window saves gas, AC wastes gas, i think window wins.

  • soooooo many variables in this myth especialy bringing 2 cars into the test. windows down is more fuel efficient common sense. ac uses power from engine. engine uses gas. screw drag its not a factor haha

  • just look at the gas gauge, the feel and sound of the engine. it takes television to clarify this?! windows open, less gas usage. that was a waste of time. the power comes from the engine which burns fuel. extra power is needed for the air conditioner which is powered by the ENGINE! all those that made bets against this common sense principle... PAY UP!!!

  • fail advertisements..

  • NNNNOOOO I WANT MY AC

  • I saw an ad before this doing an experiment seeing how many people know what the word text stands for. Does it not just mean written or typed language?

  • i hate those gay little hats

  • I think much depends on the speed. This test only shows that at 45 miles/hour it's more efficient to drive with the windows down. What about 80 miles/hour when drag increases?

  • I don't know if someone has previously mentioned this, but: I believe the size of the motor should be included in the myth as well. They were using big V8 engines which produce more power than a 4-cylinder. I think that more strain is placed on the 4-cylinder; therefore I would like this to be tested. (I ride with the windows down because I can feel a difference in the power of my vehicle with the a/c running. Yes, I drive a 4-cylinder: GAS MILEAGE! haha

  • Also they had a black SUV and a white SUV. They asborb heat diffrently.

  • These guys have the coolest fucking job

  • maybe at 45 mph, but what about 65 mph?

  • Now do a MAC vs. Windows MiniMyth.

  • yea at high speeds ac is better, but u have to take into account ur getting a much more enjoyable ride on a hot day with ac. if its really hot, ur windows down just doesnt cut it

  • It also depends on the design of the vehicle. SUV's are somewhat boxy and not as aerodynamic as some other vehicles. If you did the same test with a couple of corvettes, or ferarri's you may have the opposite results.

  • When I saw the title, I thought, what do Automatic Current, and Windows computers have against each other?

    *sigh* *headdesk*

  • I just use the A/C when its hot and windows when its just kinda warm.....I don't care about fuel efficient

  • It all depends on the car, they had 2 diffrent suv's my rav4 could problably go forever with the ac on and windows up. They 2 of the same models to be sure.

  • I grew up being told that the A/C would use up fuel. Now I know the answer.

  • well, at least the a/c is much better than the mac

  • yeah ford explorer

  • The myth is that A/C is more efficient at 55+ mph and windows are more efficient at lower than the previously mentioned speeds. I think this may have to be revisited since you stayed at 45mph the entire test. According to the myth, at 45mph, the windows down would be better, but what about 55mph and higher?

  • they got hacked.

  • Im pretty sure that if your doing the test at like at highway speed and normal local road street speed there would be a difference.

  • my ac went out in my 2001 cavalier over a year ago, i have been driveing with the windows down 20 miles to work and 20 miles home, i have not seen any difference at all in gas mileage, it seems exactly the same as it always was, i always do the trip meter and when it gets to half tank, i fill up, takes about 8 gallons at the halfway,

mileage is always at least 250 to 280 right at the 8 gallon tank fill,

so i agree with this video from my own experience.

  • This is all crap. They need to try the exact same thing right after but switch the vehicles to assure that the difference cannot be attributed to the condition of one or the other. Anywho.

  • the thing is, on a hot day, with the windows down, it can make the car HOTTER

  • I am truly confused! 1:15 the narrator saying its better to run with the ac on. Jamie says its better to run with the ac on 2:47, and Adam saying its better with the windows down 3:12 and Jamie agrees, Jamie just said its better to run with the ac on! Ahhhh! But its a good show! :)

  • These guys are TERRIBLE at setting up expirements. No other variables? Slow Speeds? High Speeds? Cmon..

  • @safewaysecurity cough cough "MINIMYTH"

  • @safewaysecurity they usually do things like that but i think this video was cut down to the bare minimum.

  • Who thought to do the test when its cold outside? Wouldn't it be better to run the test when you would actually use the AC? Warmer outside temps have a huge impact on gas mileage.

  • This is just one case, driving that type of car at that speed, wind etc etc...

but i think the point here is that MOSTLY is more efficient to drive with the windows down than with a/c on...

  • This show is pretty neat. I have been watching it for a few years now. They do some really interesting yet crazy experiments. Life would not be interesting if we did not take risks. If you like reviews of albums and video games check out my channel.

  • One test is not proof.

  • 45 mph is too slow for the drag of the wind to have an impact on fuel consumption...

  • Good to know!!!

  • They actually continue the myth at higher than 55 mph, and ac is more fuel efficient.

  • 65 mph or higher or you cannot bust this myth...

  • @internetrush I Agree. Highway speeds aren't just 45 m/h. they should try it again at higher speeds. Like 55, 60, 65 and 70.

  • @InshaKashi87

Actually, as far as the test goes, 45-55 is the best speed for fuel saving, which is the point of the test. Driving at 65+MPH would have only burned up the fuel faster in both SUVs.

It would have saved time, but time wasn't the point of the test.

  • @Skybaby79 The point of the test was a realistic look at fuel efficiency in cars windows vs ac and/or wind resistance increase in opening windows vs power sap from engine during travel.

At 45-55 mph the wind resistance is minimal—anyone who has stuck their hand out the window knows. For every time you double your speed in a car, the wind resistance is 8x what it was previously. In this case, 45 - 65 is a 69% increase in speed, or a 5x increase in air resistance.

  • @internetrush

    We're agreeing

  • @InshaKashi87 Agreed. 45-54 mph is the speed of highest fuel efficiency on vehicles. Would be easier to determine at 65-75 since they wouldnt have as many laps.

  • so which one was more fuel efficient=?

  • @alejandrotopo "I ran out first by running the A/C"; Therefore, rolling your windows down is better.

  • @alejandrotopo window down.

  • Dangit Mythbusters, I can no longer tell my father-in-law to just use the AC for this reason. He is the cheapest person in the world (he doesn't even flush when he goes pee) and he makes people sweat their asses off because he wants to save gas by not using the AC.

  • one car is ford explorer and the other ford expedition, how can u do the test this way ?

  • @Slonya23 Actually both were Expeditions. And even if it was an Explorer the Expedition would have run out long before the Explorer because it has to pull more weight and has a bigger engine.

  • Love these! Please keep em coming!

  • Thanks for posting this minimyth, I like forward to more

  • In real life you would run the A/C untill the car is ideal temperature and then turn it off. You had it turned on full the whole time. Who would want there car cabin to be a freezer?

Do it again on a hot day and have the A/C car match the temperature of the car with the open windows. Then maintain that temperature and see who runs our of gas.

  • This is an old one.

  • i love how jamie is always wearing red hi-tops. LOL

  • you allready filmed this

  • Now how about runnung AC in incriments?

  • Try at 100 KM/h or 60 MPH, my personal tests have proved AC is more fuel efficient at highway speeds

  • @cal920c And we are supposed to believe your creditable test because....?

  • @OvenRoastedMonkey I just expect them to try it, not to believe my personal testing

  • Also has something ot do with how they drive and exactly how efficient the vehicles are, but overall I think it points to the correct answer. If they switched tests (windows and a/c on opposite vehicles) for a control, I'd be more convinced, but it seems they took the lazy way this time.

  • I heart minimyths

  • I hear minimyths

  • when did adam become bald?!?!

He's gonna copy Jamie's stache now.

  • @NamNamNguyen this myth was tested by them awhile ago when adam had short hair

  • Comment removed

  • i prsonally prefer windows down anyway because it cools the entire car a lot faster (i drive an F150)

  • his mustache is freaking hugeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • 194th view 5th Comment

  • I trust these two guys with my life

  • Hold on a sec, Discovery! This one was revisited. The problem is, as speed increases, the drag gets much greater and also, the strain of the AC on the engine goes down. So at lower speeds windows down is better, at higher speeds, AC is better.

  • @uglyguitarman what if its 100 degrees out...better to drive slow and roast?

  • @CGJUGO80 That's what I was thinking. I think another thing they should have taken into account is the person themselves. At what speed when the windows are down does a person actually feel cooler?

  • @CGJUGO80 I didn't say one was better than the other. If it's 100 degrees out, you probably want to use the AC no matter what because of comfort, but if you're going slow with the AC on and the windows up, you'll get fewer miles per gallon than if your windows were open and your AC was off.

  • They were both going the same speed for the test. Also, I don't think A/C power requirements change with engine RPM or car speed. The power the A/C needs is only dependent upon the signal from the inside of the vehicle. So unless you're saying that when you go faster the air gets cooled more so the A/C doesn't need to work as hard, the A/C operates as usual. And just because the engine RPM is higher doesn't mean the A/C runs more efficiently.

  • @muchadoaboutnoting I know they were going the same speed, but they were only going one speed. I'm saying that at 70 mph, the results would be different. It's that AC has a set consumption of energy. At a higher speed, you're covering more miles, but you're still losing the same amount of energy to the AC. However, as you are going faster, the ratio of distance covered to energy lost gets much larger. But the main thing is that drag goes way up with the windows down as speeds increase.

  • @uglyguitarman So what your saying is, mythbusters fail?

  • @xquailx801 Yes. Well kind of. They revisited it and corrected their mistakes.

  • @uglyguitarman With regards to speed and drag, that only becomes really significant at really high speeds (eg over 150 mph, meaning racing speeds. Think Formula 1, GT, or Lemans). But in cases like highway and city traffic (where speed limits are usually enforced, so speeds of 60mph and lower are common, and is much more applicable to this myth), it's almost insignificant.

  • @sailorenlil Well if I'm wrong, then why did they revisit this Myth and overturn it?

  • @uglyguitarman Well where is the revisited myth? Link?

  • @sailorenlil I don't know. They didn't put it on YouTube yet. Just Google it or something.
