  • that's a good question: why phone to buy... i had e90 (to big), n82 (small screen), tytn(hate WM), n95(no qwerty)... what in the world do i want? i can't be satisfied even if all these phones are great...

so if you had a phone witch parts from what phones do you sugest?

something like c905 camera(xenon and LED), e90 screen, iphone touch screen, e75 form, xperia keyboard, and...cheeper than a nokia 1100.

  • Ah - the age old question!! I do plan to massively update my 3-Lib Grid though - that should help - watch this space!

  • hi steve,

Could u tell me which is better, the samsung omnia i900 or the nokia 5800??? and if u want you should make a video making a comparision of thes two smartphones, i´ll relly preciate that

  • I don't have an Omnia i900 here at the moment though.... I'd go for the 5800, but then that's just me!

  • i hope u can make the comparision, thanx a lot

  • Hey Steve,

Would you happen to know how many text messages the 5800 holds?

It's going to be my first Nokia and I heard they're quite good with inbox capacity?

    Thanks

  • Umm..... about 2,000 ?

  • Nokia S60 phones (5800XM included) don't limit the number of texts you can store. The only restriction is the free storage space on the phone, as I don't think there's an easy way of saving texts onto external storage. The 5800XM should easily be able to store 5000+ texts, provided that you install all apps to the external storage (which you can do) to keep the phone's internal storage free.

  • what do u think; which one i should buy? 5800 or iphone???

  • can i buy a 5800??? is it good phone???plz tell me...pl...

  • Now that the phone is out as well as the US version, do you still recommend this phone?

I don't do a whole lot of messaging nor am i a media creator, however, i would like to have my music on me at all time and this might just be ideal, i think.

My last/current phone is Nokia 6600 (the older version).

  • Is it worth getting the nokia 5800? if not, which other touch screen mobile would you recommend? [On tmobile..] Upgrade is due march 1st :) Thanks!!

  • Yes, I quite like the 5800. You could do a lot worse if you're not an iPhone lover...

  • hey steve ! i wanted to know that how does it respond to finger taps ? like the iPhone ... or better ?? is it REALLY finger friendly ? other features i have already searched out. i think its an amazing phone !!

  • Yes, it works well with a finger. Not as sensitive as the iPhone though....

  • alright !! thanx !

  • Hey steve, although you said that the 5800 is not as sensitive as the iPhone, do you think the 5800 is still sensitive enough for a light tap like the iphone? Because I was hoping that the Nokia 5800 had a touch screen as sensitive as the iPhone :(

  • No, it's resistive.

  • Im more of a media creator which is why i got the N82 black!!

  • Is the 5800 a midrange phone beause its made of plastic? I think its better than the e90 but the e90 is a highend device. right?

  • Not quite, it's midrange because of low price, cheaper camera, no graphics hardware and yes, cheaper materials.

  • "Low price, cheaper camera, no graphics hardware, cheaper materials." I beleive these are cons of the (highend) 5800 not aspects that will make it drop into a lower category. Will u say the n95 is a midrange device because it has poor battery life, led flash, no FM RDS & poor gps performance? Think about it!

  • No, the N95 is/was high end because it has a superb camera and 3D graphics hardware. Though you could argue that, at 2 years old, it's priced and built for the midrange... the goalposts are always changing!!!

  • The N95 is a highend device because of a superb camera & 3D graphics. But a 3.2 inch 360 x 640 touchscreen, accelerometer, up to 16GB microsd, HSDPA, Symbian OS v9.4 & VGA@30fps video is not enough to make the 5800 a highend device. I just dont get it. Seems like camera quality is the only thing on a phone which makes it a highend device. What about the other features? Did Nokia announce the 5800 as a midrange phone to get more sales? Beacuse it just dosen't make sense.

  • Steve, how is the touch screen like? Hard glass like the iPhone or soft plastic that you can feel?

  • Soft-ish.

  • Thanks, can you tell me from what you know if there is another touch screen phone out there with a hard hard glass like material touch screen? (except the iphone). I was thinking about the HTC HD, what would you recomend when it comes to touch screen, I heard the Samsung Omnia si also soft-ish, like you say.

  • Only the G1, currently. Nothing else is capacitive.

  • Steve i sm currently usin an iphone 2g 8gigs but want to change??.... which one shall i get 5800 or n97 or iphone 3g..... Is the 5800 3g enableed???????

    hey steve love ur videos...

    Pls respond asap

  • Yes, everything's 3.5G these days. Suggest iPhone 3G or wait for N97....

  • 1. should y whait end buy 5800

    2. n82 black , n79 , n85 ? wich one ?

    3. u got the n95 8 gb as your personal phone or n82 ?

  • No. N82. And Both (I alternate!!!)

  • thanks for the info steve

  • i'd love your review on the nokia 5800 xpressmusic and i was wondering, what type of symbian s60 v3 software u used for the office (example at 5:41 minute, where there is the excel spreadsheet shown in the 5800 xpressmusic in the video). can u please tell me where i could get it. thanks.

  • Err.... Quickoffice. It's part of the 5800's Download! app....

  • Yes, it should be pretty good. Though it'll take a few months for the firmware to really shake down....

  • i am very much impressed with the Nokia 5800 and i m planning of buying one.

And also, i am a big fan of symbian and the 5800 has flash player too, with a decent camera.

Would you recommend this phone considering that i am buying it for its touchscreen ui, music and video features, web browser and 3.2mp camera?

  • Which phone would you recomand?? I want a good phone and I've been thinking to buy the n95 or the n82. Now I can't decide which one is better. If you could send me a message that would be helpfull. Thanks for the review, it was interesting.

  • N82 or N95 8GB, according to taste 8-)

  • I use a phone for music, sms, and talking, and i would like it to have touchscreen. What would you recommend for me ?

  • iPhone or 5800 XpressMusic

  • IS the videoing as good as the nokia n96 and the nokia n93i

  • You mean as BAD as the N96? Though the N93i and N93 video is pretty good. No, the 5800 is worse than all of these. Best video capture phone at the moment is the N82. And N95, of course.

  • I also have the nokia e90, and I'm very close at possibly getting the 5800. The phone seems to have similar functionality as the iPhone but with added GPS navigation, multitask capability and can copy/paste. I do worry about the qwerty, although having many options for input helps. I like being able use T9 with one hand if needed.

  • steve can u tell me something about the new firmware on n95 9 gb ? it's 30...

  • Err.... what do you want to know? See All About Symbian for changelogs etc.

  • for example what new programs "thigs" are whit this upgrade .. on n95

  • Steve when will you get your hands on the Xperia?

  • Good q. I've been trying. Not that there's any hurry. Typical S-E smartphone and horribly slow first firmware. The longer I wait, the faster it's going to be... hopefully.

  • i agree the 5800's software doesnt look totally ready.

i have a nokia n95 8gb its awesome although the slider is feeling a little loose which isnt a good thing...

also have a blackberry bold come this week and its great love it so much :) very easy to use and does everything nicely

  • If somebody can't decide which consumer type they are, just buy a Samsung OMNIA. 5Mp camera, touch screen, GPS, WiFi, different possibilities of writing, accelerometers ... All in one device. I saw it yesterday, as my friend bought it and I was really very impressed. Works great with youtube, internet, ... Thinking about changing my new phone for this one.

Steve, I think you were testing the prototype, what about the regular production? Can you do a show on it?

  • No, I haven't seen this yet in the flesh. Been trying to get one.... mutter. I'll try again!

  • Ups...

    I must've mixed up something.

Anyway... My friend called it iPhone killer. It surely is.

Looking forward to see your test of omnia. :)

  • I agree. I have had a lot of phones but the Omnia is the most competent overall.

I would not get rid of mine .

OK windows is a little boring but Samsung has done a great job of making the phone a little more interesting.

I always bought Nokia but they were beginning to make expensive junk. And it took them ages to come up with a touch screen.

  • Well done! Always informative and entertaining. I will be interested to hear where you think the soon to be released Nokia N85 fits into the three categories.

    Keep up the good work.

  • Worth bearing in mind that the preview 5800 is a prototype. Protos tend to have a lot more glitches than the final production versions.

Also worth bearing in mind that the 5800 is half the price of the iPhone once you strip away all the network subsidies, so they're really aimed at very different target audiences.

Nokia will probably launch pricier Nseries-branded touch devices next year, which would be more direct iPhone rivals.

  • Oh, absolutely. There were quite a few other minor things that I didn't mention but which I'm sure will be sorted for production firmware. A very promising device, overall, IMHO.

  • i liked the "what phone to buy" part and i really enjoy your shows.i thought you will say the best phone for Media Consumers will be the N95 8GB,but your choises were very good.nice show.again:D

  • I think the sony ericsson k800 is the best phone .I think it isn't a smartphone but it has some great features packed in.Like a 3.2megapixel camera, 3g, edge,2.0 inch screen, and landscape gaming (not all games).

  • this nokia almost doplicates the iphone resolution on screen, how can you like watching videos on iphone better than in nokia. . .

This phone wasn't designed to copy iphone but to please the mass marked. And for me there is no comparation between iphone and nokia tube. Iphone uses a bigger processor, but makes it much more expensive while nokia have more funcionalities and better quality.

  • Thanks Steve! Cutting through the "What phone to Buy?" question very well.

Liked the review of the 5800 - looks like something to be aware of .. but I'm not a big fan of touch screen devices and I work with/on iPhones all day!
