This song in particular was instrumental in my letting go during the days following the death of my mother. Its a truly inspiring piece irrespective of where you come at it from. Roger Waters was and still remains arguably the greatest creative aspect of Pink Floyd.
Could well be the best instrumental by Roger. A great beginning for his best solo album. He had not touched us so deep since he wrote The Final Cut for Pink Floyd. Jeff Beck provides some magnificent guitar on this track and all through the album. David Gilmour has always loved and respected his playing and this is not new, as well as his appreciation for Hank Marvin´s. David was invited not long ago to encore one of Jeff Beck´s concerts. You can find it on Youtube. Waters-Gilmour WHAT A TEAM.
he needs gilmour..the sound and spirit is just not there in his solo stuff..waters was a jerk for leaving the greatest band on earth..ego and control.ruined floyd
This is probably the hardest song for me to listen to without criying. Jeff beck did an outstanding job on guitar and the keyboards were excellent. Just try to remember when you were young and life seemed safe while having fun, only to have a man in a suit and tie determine your fate in life.( You go to war while I play golf.) And try to remember your old reletives that lived in the 1900's that had to deal with so many wars. Roger is the best and deapest song writer of all time.
I think Beck was a masterstroke in choice...I guess he knew what he was doing, he was the artist after all, I would hate to put a moustache on the Mona Lisa
ok Ive checked it again in a more sober and less cynical state of mind, perhaps I was a bit out of order, not that it matters, but I still think Jeff Beck was a wrong choice to play along to this. And that's from a dedicated Floyd Fan. Dave wouldve done it VERY differently, and so would I. But whatever Roger wanted......
My 2 favorite musical prophets: Roger Waters & Leonard Cohen
Caveat: They only give one side of of human evolution; there is a positive side, too, so don't get stuck on the dark side.
"The Tide is Turning" ... the world is polarizing into light/dark to the point where it will eventually split and we will end up on the side that most matches our spiritual maturity. Time to take care of bid-ness!
As allways, Roger has used his experience in the study of history to relay a contemporay message, as in this case the ballad of Bill Hubbard who, was one of the few that actually fought in the trenches in WWI. Bill Hubbard recently passed away, but his story, relayed here in the music, will carry on being told...
You seem to be confused .Bill Hubbard was left to die in no mans land ,Dispite of the best efforts of his friend to carry him out .The story is told by Alf Razzell who trained in the same Battalion as Bill Hubbard and he feels bad about leaving Bill.
bill,, and rogers father,, my father all our forefathers have been cheated by Blair, Brown , Bush and the EUSSR,, we have lost our rights and our country..How Dare They?????
Excellent job mate, words cannot describe the beauty of what Waters does, that intro guitar by Jeff Beck,oh man there's so much heart in it,and then the story of Bill Hubbard... put me down put me down,i'd rather die i'd rather die,i was hoping he would faint,he said i can't go any further let me down,i said if i leave you here Bill you won't be found, let's have another go, he said alright then, and the same thing happened, and he couldn't stand it anymore and i had to leave him in no man's land
thanks Roger---- yeah great track isn.t it and what it must have been like in those trenches during that period we can only imagine and soon there will be no living people left from that war -trichoone .
The critics have unfairly slated this album over the years. I consider it the best of his solo work with Pros and Cons a close second. Jeff Beck was brilliant on the album but its the pure emotion of the piece that makes it so good.
am only a beginner, its took me nearly 30mins just to get it playing,i just want to ear some good tunes thats only for special people who understand the floyd and co or otherway round, its tops
I've seen him I think 6 times now, met him in Rhode Island even, thought it was going to be his last show ever....guess he showed us ;) think he's coming back here in the Fall, thanks again Trichoone, u rock
I actually spoke to him 2x. Only brought my Roger Waters' solo stuff to sign, I don't care as much for the Pink Floyd albums, after what happened to the band circa 1987 and beyond, If you factor Gilmour playing Water's material, and going to Toronto to see the band reunion on the big screen,I've actually seen him 10x now. I have 3 lithographs :) more than a few shirts, the last show, I bought tickets for 3 people, I think I've bought ATD for every family member I have, including extended ones :/
yeah amused to death is pretty epic. I never met him, I have two out of 3 of his solo albums, radio kaos and atd but i cant find kaos but. I wanna get ca ira i got one shirt from the show i saw him at. but thats cool though u enjoy his music, not alot of people know who roger waters is so thats cool.
unbelievable....I thought I was the world's greatest fan...and here I've been thinking for uh 15 years? there was only one video from my fave album of all time. Thank youuuuuuu
I Wish Roger Waters would give me some of his money! Not a lot, just enough to get bye without worrying about paying for my gas and electric!

one of the most expressive guitar work ever...it'd be insulting to call Jeff Beck a guitarist;he's much more than that: a true artist.
Thanks for posting, hadn't listened to it in ages

I listen to this track with open mind that I ad many members of my great grandparents lost in first-second conflicts.
When listening to this it makes me think about the members that never come home from Verdun.

Two things that have haunted me most are the days when I had to
collect the paybooks; and when I left Bill Hubbard in no-man's-land.
I was picked up and taken into their trench. And I'd no sooner taken
two or three steps down the trench when I heard a call, 'Hello Razz,
I'm glad to see you. This is my second night here,' and he said 'I'm
feeling bad,' and it was Bill Hubbard, one
