hi! should i save more money to get myself a pair of high end monitors? or should i get a pair of cheap monitors like B2031a? or should i just use my existing hifi system to produce music? coz i am sending my productions to an audio engineer for touching ups right after producing music.. any advice?
just looked at all the comments wanted to say thanks to those of you who answered my question.. i also see that i am not the only one that feels like this guy is full of crap.
I Have a questions for everybody posting on here not the guy on the video cause truly i don't think he knows what the hell he is talking about..... what do you guys think about some adam a7 studio speakers are these good for mastering just curious what yall think?
Adam A7, Ns10... they are all mixing systems... the concept behind them is not mastering, for mastering u use the most accurate and best sounding Hi Fi monitors on the market, now the standard is B&W Nautilus (passive) and they actually are in the Hi Fi market... mastering is completely different from mixing, don't expect to do good things with a pair of active nearfield monitors... simply because it's not their task ;)
Wow.. just noticed this reply. Apols (not) for having told it as it is.
In short, mastering is about presenting finished, great sounding mixes to their best. It is not a "fix the mix" process, unless a remix is not possible.
So, get your mix sounding the best it can, without added loudness processing. Keep it high res. Hand it to a pro mastering engineer.
Processing aside, the accurate assessment without guesswork alone makes it worthwhile.
There is SOOO much more to mastering than levels. Communication and vast amounts of listening for one. Secondly, the sound and assembling tracks to work in CONTEXT of the whole.
Well, I'm sorry if I didn't understand it in plain text. So no, in this case I didn't. But there is no need to flame me for it, is there? Seriously, now that I know you were sarcastic, I DO think it's a funny comment!
Ummmm...Theres a little more to it than levels!!!! PS. ns10's suck, But I guess they are supposed to...If it sounds good on them..it will sound good on anything!!
Every studio i have ever been in uses NS-10s. Most of those studios producing commercial chart records.
Of course there are Genelecs and such, but what would you recommend ?
By the way i have a pair of Yorkville YSM1s and Wharfdale Diamond 8.1 Pro Active, have you ever heard these things ? They translate really well. The YSM1s are like the NS10's but with a better low end.
Either one of those would be a decent near-field monitor providing you had some good quality monitors for mid-field use. I use a pair of Infinity "reference" in the near fielf to balance vocal and lead instrument levels while listening at low overall levels. I have a great old pair of JBL 4311bs for midfield or Main Monitors.
If you just want to run a single pair, check out the Events. They are very nice in their price range, much better than the NS10s which are now horribly overpriced.
But for MASTERING I would use any revealing hi-fi speaker that you are very familiar with. I have a system running a pair of Heresies and a sub to check the tone of the mix, although the mastering goes out.
NS10s would be especially BAD for mastering duties as you don't really use near-fields for this.
@DonJuanDeMarco2 Actually you're totally wrong. NS10s are some of the flattest, most accurate monitors out there, even if they don't sound "great." They sound natural. Many, many people who I've talked to who really know their stuff have all said that if you can get a mix to sound good on NS-10's, it will sound good anywhere. But for "bang for the buck" I'd recommend KRK monitors.. they're relatively cheap and BANG hard. I had a pair of Rockit 8's and they could rock a house party easily!
nice acoustically treated studio, dude. i guess the dog makes a good bass absorber, eh? do shaved heads cause additional filter combing in the sweet spot or is that subject dealt with in Mastering 102 ?
all I've heard of DM are mp3s..but yeah, besides the general shittiness of the music, I havent heard any metallica record sound like they did 80s-1990 black album. I thought that was a deliberate sound choice, but is it the overloudness? What a stupid world.
It was done without the band knowing it. the mp3s that were leaked early sound a small bit better than the album. The Guitar Hero tracks sound great though.
"Mastering is making your song natural and rich as much is possible."
isn't that what you do in the mix? A well mixed track doen't have to have any post treatment other than setting the percieved volume level to the other tracks and to a overall volume BUT if NEEDED you should of course do whatever to get each and every track to gel. Eventually it will all be smashed on the radio ... hahaha!
you cracked it I guess? it's not something you can use presets for. if that were possible, mastering engineers wouldn't get paid $200 an hour. you have to do it by ear. it takes me like an hour or so to master a song, usually.
dude... I think your nails would look better with a lighter shade...

There's so much wrong with that studio setup AND that engineer's idea of what mastering really is that I wouldn't even know where to begin.

What are you talking about? NS 10's are 'THE' mastering speakers of choice!
The guy knows squat :p
dazzelya 2 years ago
Actually, they are the MIXING speakers of choice for many. They are weighted in the midrange and are not made for mastering.

I'm a professional audio engineer myself.

No flaming here!. Don't worry about it ;)
You know who I did flame? A guy in a video talking about mixing AND mastering his song. In a living room, on a laptop with PT LE on headphones :|
It made me cringe how much of a misconception there is out there...

That's not mastering :)
Mastering is making your song natural and rich as much is possible.
Making right decisions and judging by the sound itself.
Mastering is not putting EQ and compressors to make it louder or even.
Mastering is also a philosophy and art.
Cheers. :)
reflixtinian totally agree with you :D he is on some crack :D
