If people thing that these horses are ridden unnatural and painfully, (which their not of course) they should see a Tennessee walking horse in their action... :S
Very, very brave men to jump in icy water and rescue their horses. Accidents happen, people. These horses are beloved and cherished by their owners. Every horse was saved, a miracle.
Would you all just shut up about whether it was cruel or not! It was obviously a freak accident. But instead of moaning about the cruelty, how about commending and showing a huge amount of respect that those men and helpers deserve! They didn't have to rush in and jump into that water and risk their own health to save the horses, even if it their job to do so. If it was your horse, you would thank them, i know i would be eternally grateful for saving my horse's life! Show some respect guys.
Those people that jumped into the icey waters, pushed the thrashing horses up by their butts perfectly in harms reach of the back legs, didn't leave until every single horse was out and safe, were either really stupid or really brave and big hearted...and they sure as hell weren't stupid. Yeah they should have checked the thickness of the ice but unlike a lot of people, these people didnt leave, they stayed til the problem was fixed. And THAT'S what makes everyone there soo great
@PasoFinoLover21 100% agree. Its not about whether it was cruel to do in the first place or not. Its the people that just potentially saved those horses lives, and the riders. No one had to help them, they could've jsut taken one look at that grey and thought 'no, its too weak' but instead they persevered and thats what makes it worth while (:
Yea ya'll can complain about saftey and stuff. The guy who jumps in around 3:54 is a beast. Stop babying the animals with safety all the time, BEASTLY!!!!!
It is really frustrating that they didn't check the thickness before riding all these horses out on the ice. I know that this is done all the time in Iceland, and that these horses are capable of walking safely on ice, but it is sad that mistakes like this happen. It is good that they got all the horses out; I was worried about them becoming hypothermic, especially that lethargic grey.
Personally, even though I know my Icelandic mare could handle it, I would never rider her on ice.
Omg seriously the people just abandone there horses in the water! Then pull them out! like thats gonna work you have to be super strong! And why did they go on ice!
HOW STUPID CAN YOU BE! THIS IS ACTUALLY REALLY UPSETTING! YOU PATHETIC PEOPLE!!!!! I HOPE ALL THE PONIES WERE OKAY! OMG CANNOT BELIEVE THIS :'( REALLY HOPE THEY WERE ALL OKAY. STUPID PEOPLE.

i remember a few years ago i saw this on animal planet, and some really nice man helped get all the ponies out by kneeling on one and letting the ponies use there legs to jump off his other knee onto land. i'm just glad all the ponies are safe! :)
There are an awful lot of uneducated people spouting on here. This was a horrific accident. The act itself is not uncommon. Nobody intended this to happen. And as for the torturing the horses...get your facts right before you rant. They don't torture them to produce the gaits. Well done to everyone involved for going all out to rescue these horses in such a short space of time. I hope all horses and riders were okay.
@flumpis not a comedy dude its a tradgedy the horses could freeze to death, they couldve got hurt and the people couldve got hurt and had a mini heart attack
Any way , what I say is CONGRATULATIONS to all these people who did every thing to rescue ALL the horses , great work! and accident because this is what it was will always happen .
Just want everyone to know that the horses in this type of sport don't suffer any pain. They use weights on their feet so they become stronger, not painful devices. Search for "islandskopper" on google.
Do you see the high stepping at the beginning of the video. They torture horses by putting painful devices around their ankles and pedestals on their feet. These idiots care nothing for horses. I wish the riders fell through the ice and drowned instead of further subjecting their horses to more risk and pain. The morons!.
@lucindaknowlton These ponies are a special breed. The are Icelandic ponies, they naturally have different paces to other horses, they have different type of trot called a tolt, that is what they are doing at the beginning of the video. All Icelandic ponies do it as a natural pace, it has nothing to do with torture. You have no idea about how these horses have been treated previously. Yes, it was a bad idea to ride on this surface, but you have shown yourself up by putting that comment. 'moron'
People are really freaking out here! You guys who DON'T know anything, think twice, before you leave such stupid comments as ''Go to hell'' and etc.

@iByork YEAH I KNOW ABOUT IT. YOU'RE THE MORON... DO YOU KNOW HOW THEY GET THOSE PONIES TO STEP SO HIGHLY - TORTURE! THEY WRAP SPIKED CHAINS AROUND THEIR ANKLES AND OTHER WONDERFUL TORTURE SO THE ONLY WAY THE POOR ANIMAL GETS RELIEF IS TO STEP HIGH LIKE THAT. YOU ARE A MORON!
@lucindaknowlton Spiked chains?? Are you stupid!? They use something called BOOTS, so the horse can get stronger feets. Many other horses use boots too! It is legal to do it. This horses are trained WAY MORE friendly than for example race horses are. I have been to many courses, and I do competitions in this sport by my self. My horse LOVES it. I guess you people don't know ANYTHING about this sport!
@lucindaknowlton i think ur thinking of something else, the tolt is a natural gait of the icelandic horses. Your thinking about the likes of tennessee walking horses etc, where soring is used.
whos stupid idea was it to walk across a pond on a horse. only stupid people. everyone knows even peiople who don't have horses no better. and random question. how deep is that pond?
wow, many of these comments are saying that this is animal cruelty and all, but really people, don`t be too harsh. Icelandic people are well aproved horsetrainers, and they often use really natural ways of caring for their horses. And also, the ice over there s normally PRETTY damn thick, so this was a sheer accident, this is most probably (walking over the ice I mean) a cermony off some sort which they have been doing for many years. And it wasn`t like they just stood there and watched either.

@ronseanflynn So, yeah: they put those ponies in the ice in purpuse, yes. B'cause it's funny to dropp iceland ponies in the cold water and later, running for rescuing them.
i watched all to make sure they lived and were rescued but good damet ppl u nearly killed your self your horses more importantly lucky girl who didnt fall in
wow... That's stupid... ''hey, lets just get a bunch of horses to get across this ice, and hope that the ice will support the weight of 11horses...'' ...WHAT??
At least horses can swim. If the riders get them out in time they will be perfectly fine. If they stay in there too long they could freeze and their muscles could go weak and they could spaz out and die. D: Were they okay?
@yourdebutante Well, perhaps that rider was one of the people getting the horses out right after. He was way more useful outside the water than drowning inside... I don't think that he stayed there watching it's horse freeze until someone else gave it back to him. :)
I have to say this was a really stupid stunt to try and pull.. but I was almost brought to tears at around 3:51 where it looks as if the rider of that horse (I only assume because he's wearing a helmet) runs up and frantically tries to save his friend. He even falls into the water in an attempt to push it up in desperation, shouting the whole time. I wish I knew what was being said..
So in all, this was really stupid.. but these people love their horses enough to risk their own lives for them.
the retard that started screaming and practically jumped on top of the brown horse should get kicked in the head, screaming does nothing but freak the horse out. this whatever it is IS UTTERLY STUPID OF PEOPLE TO PUT ANIMALS THROUGH IT
Good job to everyone on getting all those horses out. That took a lot of work and heart. I know people that would have just left all those horses to freeze to death in that water.
@MozDragon So you know. That was going to be a parade. And it is very much ice on Iceland. They may have to cross the ice to get home. Tought about it? Answer: NO! Icelandic Horses means everything for a icelandic man. They would try everything to get theyre horses up. Think about it, a Icelandic horse is not just a horse. It means everything to someone !
Why didn't someone drill a test hole in the ice to see how thick it was before 11 horses were put out there? Never mind the threat of hypothemia lets add insult to injury and yank the hell out of their poor mouths with the bits!!!!! YIKES!
first of all, why the hell were all of them riding on ice? and second of all no ice should be trusted, plus it is dangerous to ride that close to eachother not only on ICE but in real riding, even if your horses are calm or trained, accidents happen. another thing this was just so stupid, a horse could have died. Next time dont walk on ice I hope all of you know that you are stupid for going through with this. Now the poor horses had to freeze in the water because of your mistake. USE UR BRAIN!!
@lisccanne the ppl were scared. and the horses were to cold to muster up enerygy. the screaming and hitting was to get the horses to get out of the freezing water before they dies. and why in the HELL were they riding on ICE!! thats the stupidest shit ive ever seen.
What amazing ponies to be so calm in such a scary situation. I don't know many horses, Icelandic or not, that would stay so calm. And kudos to everyone who got them out quickly and efficiently. Way to go!
@rockstarGE Well, we don't know ´how big the lake was or how thick the ice was. Better to try and get them out as fast as possible. First rule when falling through ice: turn around and try to go up the way you came.
Married to an Icelander. They are tough!!! And so are the ponies!! IThat is a lot of ponies to just "disappear". Good work in a tough situation. Was it a manmade lake/pool?
who rides horses on ice? poor horses! they had to be in the water for soo long and the dumb people were just standing there and then smart people got there and were running around trying to help! :)
With no doubt, i'd jump in the water as well!! But its a little poor for the horses that they are pulled in their mouths, but better a sore mouth than a dead horse!
they did a good job getting those horses out of there. thumbs up to them haha they worked together. its something called teamwork. alot of people dont know how to works a team. and this is a fine example. its not like they planned for the horses to g through the ice.it was a frreak accident that was resolved with quick thinking and reflexes haha great job to those who got those ponies out :)
please, stop saying that it is stupid to ride on ice. it is an amazing expirience and very fun. and of course they checked the ice, the icelandics are not stupid and they have done this rutine before, it was only an accident. and all the horses survived and they are all fine :)
Jesus Christ those horses are incredibly brave, our English horses would not have survived so long in such situations!! It just shows hoe incredible mankind can be when a situation arises where we must all band together to help something.
IT WAS A FREAK ACCIDENT GUYS they had warmed these ponies up on the ice and it had been fully tested, watch the video, around the crack the ice is still strong enough for the ponies to crash into and flail at and pull their whole weight onto the edge!!
There sooo stupid!!! Why the he'll wud u have 11 horses even go on ice YOU JUST DONT DO THAT! I'm not racist at all but these other countries are just absoulutly stupid at times..
@taylor123958 They always race on the ice, it was fully tested, they had warmed up on it!! It is tradition in those countries, as in America they take trucks over the ice lakes to get to their destination, it happens to the truckers, yet the still do it EVERY year, and so do the Icelandics!! It is just how it is done
i think its pretty obvious that you dont ride on ice, no matter how stable you think it is. but these people payed the price. im just glad the some of the people got in the water to help save the ponies. thank god for them.
@VLS1998t yes they did, they fully warmed the ponies up on it, watch the video, the horses flail their legs and drag themselves up and the ice at the edge of the crack doesn't break! It was a freak accident
@brijayn yes they did, they fully warmed the ponies up on it, watch the video, the horses flail their legs and drag themselves up and the ice at the edge of the crack doesn't break! It was a freak accident
y not wrap the ropes around their bodies and pull them out instead of yanking their necks. that must hurt so much. they can hold their heads up without yanking on the reins like that. and then on top of that they are freezing. atleast they were urgent and got them all out. this was kinda hard to watch. good job though considering the circumstance and the resources.
its sad to watch how tired those horses r to fight over to get on the ice and safe. whos idea was ride on ice which isnt so thick that it would endure 11 horses? like over 1000 kilos. wtf dudes. like, i know how it feels to be falled to ice. its cold and you get hypotherm. then your on bed next week. thats seriously so sad and aggravating when people get dumb.
i know it was extrenuating circumstances, but my opinion is to NOT have 5 people pulling on the bit in a horses mouth when he has fallen through ice. ridiculous.
@countrylovincowgirl4 they tried to keep the horses heads up the water that they wouldnt drown. you didnt realise that those horses were tired? like the grey one?
That is horrible to watch, and saying that accidents happen really isn't justified in this case - this is deliberately putting your horse in peril all for the sake of what? Fun? Competition? Just a ludicrous thing to do in the first place in my opinion. Let's hope a lesson was learned here.
"Nearly 20 ponies and riders...fell through the frozen Reykjavík Pond during the Championship League in Horse Sports' tölt show on Tuesday, 3 February. Tölt horse shows on ice are regularly held in Iceland in winter."
- HorseandHound(dot)co(dot)uk
In Iceland, it is normal to ride on the ice, just like here we drive on frozen lakes. This was a freak accident. Never happened before in the long history of the festival. All the horses survived. The rescue was fast-thinking and brave. Kudos!
Nothing like Vikings or their descendants to fix their own mishaps. To all those invloved, you were very brave and resolute. No firemen, no tractors, no nothing, just damn action, well done! Jivemagic, can't be much of that in you, do you know how bits work? when you pull forward you are pulling on the poll not the mouth, plus as you were told ACTION was needed and given so 11 Icelandics did not drown. Damn tough Northern people.
@nameofthepen Thank you. I am from Madrid and have horses in a mountain range in a tiny village where my mom is from 200km S.W. of Madrid. I love horses and the countryside (not into equestrian sports, but do respect all forms of horsemanship). I was brought up in England so imagine how much stuff on horses and Northern people in my head. I appreciate your comment and thank you for the mention, plus I'll look into that horse show I had never heard of. Good luck in all you undertake, POSITIVE!
@akanewe - ha ha...I answered you here again, but accidentally pointed my reply at myself instead of you. I'm not feeling well today, but still...duh! :D
@nameofthepen - my pleasure, my friend. Please, also go to this channel, and look at some of his videos. They are very short, and this man and his horse magic will blow your mind: /user/nature2promotion#g/u
(If that link doesn't work for you, PM me, I will send the complete one in a PM)
@THEEQUINELUVER I can`t take what you said seriously, you must be very young or just have no idea of what I'm talking about. I spent years in England studying Vikings so I know what I'm saying and there is nothing in the first sentence that would upset any adult Northerners. What is a stereotype? How much unchecked or unconfirmed information in the 1st sentence? What are Vikings known for? Who were they? What traces did they leave in Eastern England? maybe you're the jerk.
@akanewe ok i get what your saying but i still think that when you said nothing like them to fix their own mishaps its stereotypical cause that is not factual im not saying it about vikings but you really cant say such a thing about there descendants cause you dont know them, everyone is uniqe in there own way
and i didnt take kindly to the "maybe you're the jerk" comment
also i apolojize for calling you a jerk
:):):)
i cant difine stereotypical word for word (sorry) so im not going too:)
@THEEQUINELUVER Ok, that´s cool, but ask yourself if I know any Danish, Norwegian or Swedish people (their descendants). The world is full of individuals as you say, but groups of these make up people that name themselves as they have. Common traits in individuals living in proximity, wishing to behave alike and communicate alike make up those social groups, hence stereotypes(common beliefs about certain social groups) occur, based on facts or fables, we have to search. Well, good luck to you.
@akanewe ill make this really simple and end our conversation now, yeah i get it and ok :) oh and thank you for defining stereotypical that was very kind of you
@hendefraholland Please, see yourself in your own world and remember your whole life. Now look back and search, can you say you have never ever had an accident of any sort? you being a wise human, have you never ever checked everything and still had an accident. Bridges collapse, planes fall, factories burn, cars crash, people trip up and break limbs and yes horses do go through ice. A little compassion will always help, but that know-it-all attitude never does.
If people thing that these horses are ridden unnatural and painfully, (which their not of course) they should see a Tennessee walking horse in their action... :S

PinataOnWheels 3 months ago
the retard that started screaming and practically jumped on top of the brown horse should get kicked in the head, screaming does nothing but freak the horse out. this whatever it is IS UTTERLY STUPID OF PEOPLE TO PUT ANIMALS THROUGH IT

Good job to everyone on getting all those horses out. That took a lot of work and heart. I know people that would have just left all those horses to freeze to death in that water.

The poor horses had to go through hell just because some lazy stupid people didnt check the ice. How stupid can people be? Really, tell me???

WTF! why would you even try to ride a horse on ice, let alone a group or a group so tightly bunched!!!
you should be very thankful that all the horses made it out.
they were VERY calm and they were the ones that went through the pain, just sitting there in the icy cold water
i hope no one ever does this again. and yeah, i know - bad things happen, but this was just foolish and stupid
MozDragon 5 months ago

YIKES!
mushmush7 6 months ago
first of all, why the hell were all of them riding on ice? and second of all no ice should be trusted, plus it is dangerous to ride that close to eachother not only on ICE but in real riding, even if your horses are calm or trained, accidents happen. another thing this was just so stupid, a horse could have died. Next time dont walk on ice I hope all of you know that you are stupid for going through with this. Now the poor horses had to freeze in the water because of your mistake. USE UR BRAIN!!

they did a good job getting those horses out of there. thumbs up to them haha they worked together. its something called teamwork. alot of people dont know how to works a team. and this is a fine example. its not like they planned for the horses to g through the ice.it was a frreak accident that was resolved with quick thinking and reflexes haha great job to those who got those ponies out :)
PocketRocket2010 1 year ago
please, stop saying that it is stupid to ride on ice. it is an amazing expirience and very fun. and of course they checked the ice, the icelandics are not stupid and they have done this rutine before, it was only an accident. and all the horses survived and they are all fine :)

Jesus Christ those horses are incredibly brave, our English horses would not have survived so long in such situations!! It just shows hoe incredible mankind can be when a situation arises where we must all band together to help something.
IT WAS A FREAK ACCIDENT GUYS they had warmed these ponies up on the ice and it had been fully tested, watch the video, around the crack the ice is still strong enough for the ponies to crash into and flail at and pull their whole weight onto the edge!!
xXeMokiDXxMCRXx 1 year ago
There sooo stupid!!! Why the he'll wud u have 11 horses even go on ice YOU JUST DONT DO THAT! I'm not racist at all but these other countries are just absoulutly stupid at times..
taylor123958 1 year ago
@taylor123958 They always race on the ice, it was fully tested, they had warmed up on it!! It is tradition in those countries, as in America they take trucks over the ice lakes to get to their destination, it happens to the truckers, yet the still do it EVERY year, and so do the Icelandics!! It is just how it is done
xXeMokiDXxMCRXx 1 year ago
and yet ppl in foreign countries say americans are stupid. but at least we americans are smart enough not to horseback ride on ice. idiots.

y not wrap the ropes around their bodies and pull them out instead of yanking their necks. that must hurt so much. they can hold their heads up without yanking on the reins like that. and then on top of that they are freezing. atleast they were urgent and got them all out. this was kinda hard to watch. good job though considering the circumstance and the resources.

MyZanaa 1 year ago
its sad to watch how tired those horses r to fight over to get on the ice and safe. whos idea was ride on ice which isnt so thick that it would endure 11 horses? like over 1000 kilos. wtf dudes. like, i know how it feels to be falled to ice. its cold and you get hypotherm. then your on bed next week. thats seriously so sad and aggravating when people get dumb.
Keymixable 1 year ago
i know it was extrenuating circumstances, but my opinion is to NOT have 5 people pulling on the bit in a horses mouth when he has fallen through ice. ridiculous.
countrylovincowgirl4 1 year ago
@countrylovincowgirl4 they tried to keep the horses heads up the water that they wouldnt drown. you didnt realise that those horses were tired? like the grey one?
Keymixable 1 year ago
That is horrible to watch, and saying that accidents happen really isn't justified in this case - this is deliberately putting your horse in peril all for the sake of what? Fun? Competition? Just a ludicrous thing to do in the first place in my opinion. Let's hope a lesson was learned here.
jalbram1966 1 year ago
why they are riding on ice!?? Are they all fine?

Good luck in all you undertake, POSITIVE!

jerkkkkkkkkkkkk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THEEQUINELUVER 5 months ago
@THEEQUINELUVER I can`t take what you said seriously, you must be very young or just have no idea of what I'm talking about. I spent years in England studying Vikings so I know what I'm saying and there is nothing in the first sentence that would upset any adult Northerners. What is a stereotype? How much unchecked or unconfirmed information in the 1st sentence? What are Vikings known for? Who were they? What traces did they leave in Eastern England? maybe you're the jerk.
akanewe 5 months ago
@akanewe ok i get what your saying but i still think that when you said nothing like them to fix their own mishaps its stereotypical cause that is not factual im not saying it about vikings but you really cant say such a thing about there descendants cause you dont know them, everyone is uniqe in there own way
and i didnt take kindly to the "maybe you're the jerk" comment
also i apolojize for calling you a jerk
:):):)
i cant difine stereotypical word for word (sorry) so im not going too:)
THEEQUINELUVER 5 months ago
@THEEQUINELUVER Ok, that´s cool, but ask yourself if I know any Danish, Norwegian or Swedish people (their descendants). The world is full of individuals as you say, but groups of these make up people that name themselves as they have. Common traits in individuals living in proximity, wishing to behave alike and communicate alike make up those social groups, hence stereotypes(common beliefs about certain social groups) occur, based on facts or fables, we have to search. Well, good luck to you.
akanewe 5 months ago
@akanewe ill make this really simple and end our conversation now, yeah i get it and ok :) oh and thank you for defining stereotypical that was very kind of you

Omg.. They come from Iceland, and should know better! I can't believe it!
hendefraholland 1 year ago
@hendefraholland Please, see yourself in your own world and remember your whole life. Now look back and search, can you say you have never ever had an accident of any sort? you being a wise human, have you never ever checked everything and still had an accident. Bridges collapse, planes fall, factories burn, cars crash, people trip up and break limbs and yes horses do go through ice. A little compassion will always help, but that know-it-all attitude never does.
