Oh My God! Freaky coincidence just happened! I was looking up the cello version of "Smooth Criminal" which was preformed by Luka and Stjepan on a whim. and then I remembered that at some of the faculty at a music camp i attended played this piece, so id decided to look it up and ironically Stjepan was the cellist preforming in this video. Wow! This was amazing to listen to! what a coincidence! Hahaha. =D
I want to play THIS!!!! thank you, your performance is inspiring!!!
btw- I like the eyes of the violinist... I don´t know why, but they absolutelly fit to this movement :) also I love the last seconds of this video, the moment of waiting for the right moment to finish... WOW ♥
There's an excellent 5 part radio series called 'The Grand Piano' which you can download as a podcast (Google). It has a section dedicated to explaining this work. To make things better, it aslo has the full original recording which is fabulous.
Well Shostakovich wrote this in solidarity with the suffering Jews (it was recorded originally with Shost himself playing piano in 1946). I think he had one particular Jewish friend in mind. To really get the message across, he decided to make the 4th movement a reworking of a jewish jig (or song). It's like a destroyed version. Incredibly powerful and exciting.
It's funny in a sardonic sense to try and guess at what this final movement represents, only to be awed at its true purpose. This performance was sublime; thank you so much for posting.
That's a very different rendition of the passage he quoted in the 8th quartet! It sounded completely fanatical there, while spooky and dance like here.
Wow! Very, very good! The fact that it is, perhaps, a tiny bit too fast (in my opinion) is compensated by the huge discharge of energy you generate!
In other words, congratulations! The three of you are very good musicians, and judging by your schedule, which can be seen on your personal site, you have a shiny future ahead of you.
I am not a religious person, but if I were, I would pray for your future success every single day!
@sephiroth999999 Hi - I have to say I disagree with you (not on the "be successful" part) - I like is this tempo . I believe Shostakovich was trying to mimic the atmosphere of the Concentration Camps, and in my opinion it should constantly be pushing forward with the piece feeling as though it could spiral out of control at any moment, I used to play this, and I remember how much fun it was to race through to the end, although by the 8th minute or so my arms were killing me...
Absolutely terrifying.

Dude, I'm not sure I've ever seen any one rock out this hard in my life, and I go to metal shows all the time.
Oh and on a side note, Shostakovich definitely recycled a few parts of this for his 8th quartet...

the main theme is from his 8th qaurtet!
sethlightking 1 year ago 2
@sethlightking actually it's the other way around... the theme in his 8th quartet is derived from this trio.
the trio is an earlier work.

@jyseow yup, i knew, just stating in no particular order that the themes are the same

lol this has the melody of the 8th quartet...interesting
prayformercy4 2 years ago
The 8th quartet 'quotes' the melody from this trio. Shostakovitch referred to that quartet as an 'autobiographical' work.
PhysiqueQuantique 1 year ago
@prayformercy4 Yeah, the 8th quartet contains a lot of quotations from other pieces; he wrote it partly as a kind of "epitaph" for himself.

@petitequinte That is just so remarkably creepy, no?

I love Shosty.
It is incredible how he is able to write this trio like the quartet and in the mean time so different!!!
I agree with achan1058 for the dance of this trio.
