pretty sick bruce doesn't seem to mind all this material of his up on youtube for free. unlike certain other money grubbers of the classic rock era (ie: beatles).
as the years pass, bruce is still rocking and still gaining young fans --- his legacy grows every day (unlike the beatles who are negotiating business deals with steve jobs like they don't have enough money already)
This version is AWESOME. The reverb and opening harmonica make it a lot more powerful than the original version. It's a lot louder too. In short, it's the tits.
Sorry - the studio version is perfection. This version is chopped & screwed - slightly interesting as a live version perhaps - but even then I'd probably take the opportunity to find a latrine & piss out my beer. Sorry BruceHeads - this is barely proficient.
I just wished he consulted with someone who knew a little about '69 Chevys before he went and put "Fuelie Heads on a Big Block. I freakin love this song, but he killed me with that one. Still in all, Awesome Tune.
This is one of my favorite songs by the Boss, and definitely my favorite outtake!!! And no, this one is a bit different from the version included in "The Promise". I really, really love this song, and I listen to it every night and day... This version has been one of my favorite songs of all time for more than two years now. =)
I like this quite a bit. But it sounds a little bit too much like The Promised Land or The Price You Pay. The slower, final version has a sadness and desperation that this one just can't match.
I love these releases. I get an idea of the process. Bruce never sold us ANYTHING shabby or thoughtless. I like this, but I can understand why the final "and then he kissed me" version was decided upon. Fucker's the best that ever was, even his bloopers are grand....
I just love the way Bruce switches up the songs and they can sound so different but yet equally so great. That's Bruce being Bruce - first saw him live in 1975 - so many times now - always go to both shows if in town for both nites - concerts always a little different each nite. Thanks for posting this one for all of us Bruce fanatics.
seen B 9 times 1st was the River tour in ames IOWA no song twice the same but always well thought out and placed for impact on the audiance our politcs are 180 degrees out of phase but he walks on water w\ a telecaster - acoustic - and a band blowing the doors off i have a booleg from 78 that would make a strong men cry
@rmeofiowa I like the fact that you can hear this song so many different ways. He's not like some artists who want their songs to always sound like they did on the record. -- Like The Eagles. They were a great band, but they sing their songs the same way all the time.
Neat version. Thanks for posting! I still like the other one better. I love the hanting quality of it, along with the lyrics that match. Just gorgeous. But this one is good as an upbeat version.
for different version read worse version - sounds like he's singing with a broken nose and slurs his words like he's plastered - love the boss, don't love this as it detracts from the brilliant original
'The Observer' recently published a fax from (the much lamented) Joe Strummer, who had been asked to contribute to a tv documentary about the Boss. Joe begins by saying that "you'd have to be a Martian from Venus not to love Bruce Springsteen", then cites this track as an example of Bruce's poetry and finishes by saying that the he has "an ocean of talent" . Looking forward to seeing him tonight at Glastonbury (on tv, not live unfortunately), and hope he does his cover of 'London Calling'.
It's great to hear different versions of his songs and how they have progressed. This version is good, a bit raw and not quite there in my opinion. The original album version is simply great and his live rendition of "Racing", especially with the E Street Band, is amazing.
This is the best version I heard it over 20 years ago on 99.1 WPLR New Haven Ct. They would play oddball stuff after 9pm. Yes I was and still am an avid Street Racer 69 Mach 1 428 R Code 4 Speed All Black it does blend into the Backstreets with 550 Hp
I know the feeling. I just bought a new 2009 Mustang GT/CS with a 4.6 V8, 5 spd, cherry red, black and tan leather interior and XM. I turned the Satellite radio to the E Street Channel and the very FIRST song i heard after taking delivery was the original of this song followed by Born to Run. Talk about destiny. I let those ponies run.....greatest feeling in the world.
I agree with the masses as well, but it's really cool to get to hear this after all these years. I'd never heard it before now. How 'bout all you other Bruce files out there sittin' on your stack of studio out takes? Turn the rest of us under-priviledged Tramps out here on to your stuff!
I sorry i have to agree this is a good version but the original is just such a personal song. This song could so eaisly be destroyed to just some stupid song about cars but that version is just so much more it stirs up so much emotion.
Having followed Bruce from back when Asbury Park had just been released, it was interesting to hear how some of the songs that we know so well today "evolved" through countless live performances. I've got a couple bootlegs that feature "works in progress," and the evolution is very interesting...
@mojogypsy yeah. those bootlegs are real treasures. I would have never discovered bruce's rendition of "walkin' the dog" of it weren't for one of mine. the audio quality is terrible, but you wouldn't believe the early version of NYC Serenade!
I like this but I think if he kept this version, it would have became "just another song." I hate to say it that way (every Bruce song is special), but the original album version (not this one) is classically personal, dark, and perfect.
this was my m8s funeral song and man what a send off song.

Is this the "Rock" version that will be on the Darkness box set ?
Not bad at all, but it doesn't seem to rock harder than the album version.
So i guess there might be another version, still unheard of.

I love this version! I especially love the different lyrics not just because they're new but because they're potent:
"waking up in a world that somebody else owns"
"Some guys do it 'cause they don't know what else they can do".
I like both versions equally
