George Allen won 168 games as a head coach. He won the 1972 NFC Championship with the Washington Redskins, but he is most notable for starting one of the biggest rivalries in the NFL.

I was a teenager living in suburban Oxon Hill when Allen took over in Washington. I can remember the excitement as Allen led the "over the Hill gang" into the playoffs. Coach allen sports the third highest winning percentage in NFL history, behind only Lombardi and Madden. Sadly, however, Allen appeared to lack the moral integrity of the likes of Tony Dungy or that of his old protagonist Tom Landry. Check out the book by his daughter jennifer, Fifth Quarter. Prepare to be disturbed.

allen treated sonny jurgensen like a pariah, and his one dimensional focus on defense cost his teams the championships they could have won. but he deserves credit for finding a way to squeeze a few more years out of players past their prime.

Being from Washington, D.C. and a diehard skins fan, I can tell you that he is as important to the skins as Joe Gibbs. He really turned it around after Lombardi came here. I guess his sons' turned out okay too.

And he made Long Beach St. into a winner.

George Allen was an innovator and motivator; the Redskins-Cowboys rivalry was never as fun as when GA was coaching the Skins.
