Have you ever heard of the SDS and Weathermen? They were terrorist before the term was used. There was actually very little abuse of the Hippies back then. I was a staunch conservative and I had many Hippie friends. Another thing, the Hippies were actually a very small percentage on my generation.

I was a child during the Vietnam War. I was born in 1958. I thought the hippies were protesting all war. I was all for that. In spring of 1969, we went on a field trip to Jackson Square in the French Quarter of New Orleans. There were hippies everywhere. We asked them for their autographs. They got a kick out of that. They answered all of our wide eyed innocent questions. I wonder to this day, how'd they grow their hair long so fast from Mod 1966 to the Summer of Love 67.

i'm doing something tonight i recommend everyone try. i got high and proceeded to watch 2 or 3 clips from various documentaries that came up in the search results after searching for each decade, from the 1910s up to the 1990s and then the past decade. I'm on 1960s now..obviously. this has been a most fascinating experiment. you can see so clearly the evolution of culture, social norms, style of speaking, aesthetics, politics, morals, art, and technology. It's fascinating to watch like this...

@smlutz How do you know that? In interviews with hippies from that time period they speak about their search for God, the importance of faith, and yes, Jesus. They criticized mainstream culture for preaching what they called "Christianity" without following his actual teachings. Even those who investigated Buddhism or Hinduism would tell you that all these great world religions preached the same thing; kindness, love, peace and justice.

Too much sugar-coating of the hippie movement. Completely ignores the fact that hippie ideas have been full of FAIL from the very beginning. For example, note how many of the most adored hippie musicians were all DEAD by 1975; note how the social programs they advocated have INCREASED poverty, the exact opposite of what the hippies said they wanted. And so on and so on.

Seems every generation has it's revolutions and it's fights. Today it's Iraq and Afghanistan, and fighting corporate greed on Wall Street. We've developed our own version of hippy, partially in the same spirit, and in many ways very different. I used to be a fire breathing douchebag war hawk, until I fought in Iraq and saw that everything I went to war for, was a lie. I suppose Vietnam was no different. The hippies were right. Studies tell us bras and shoes are bad for you - vegetarians enjoy many health benefits - weed is almost virtually harmless, and has so many medical uses. The only ones who new this back in the 60's were the hippies because they followed their heart. Now we have science to prove all these things, but people don't have the balls that hippies did to rip off their bras and give up tradition lol.

i'm doing something tonight i recommend everyone try. i got high and proceeded to watch 2 or 3 clips from various documentaries that came up in the search results after searching for each decade, from the 1910s up to the 1990s and then the past decade. I'm on 1960s now..obviously. this has been a most fascinating experiment. you can see so clearly the evolution of culture, social norms, style of speaking, aesthetics, politics, morals, art, and technology. It's fascinating to watch like this...

@smlutz How do you know that? In interviews with hippies from that time period they speak about their search for God, the importance of faith, and yes, Jesus. They criticized mainstream culture for preaching what they called "Christianity" without following his actual teachings. Even those who investigated Buddhism or Hinduism would tell you that all these great world religions preached the same thing; kindness, love, peace and justice.
