  • Ubuntu = epic

    Asus eee pc = epic

  • cool

  • nice laptop and operating system

  • easyy peasy is way better than the xandros that came with my eee the beryl looks really awesome

  • I am thinking of buying one,not because i actually need it but because i am amazed and i quess i am kind of a gadget freak. What i need to know is,if it was easy to install ubuntu. From what i ve seen i don't like the out of the box linux version,an i was thinking(if i finally buy one)to install ubuntu.

    ps.

I ve never operated linux before, but i ve herad the best.

  • You should install Easy Peasy, an Ubuntu based version of Linux for NetBooks.

It works great and right out of the box.

  • its extremely easy to install, just download Unetbootin for windows and download the linux iso, then open the unetbootin and load the iso onto a usb (at least 1gb) and it will make a bootable usb for you. its that simple :)

  • Neat, i personally don't like the gears in the cube though.

  • Comment removed

  • on my own i have an aquarium with sharks. You can get anything.

  • i agree

  • because it's small and GREAT for simple work.

  • The asus eee pc is small, has a very long battery life, and runs perfectly fine for what it was designed for (Being a portable web device), and is also very cheap. What exactly is wrong with the asus eee pc?

  • I changed my laptop for an EEE PC.

I'm a writer and need a portable device so the EEE PC fits just nice. It's cheaper then a PC notebook and the keybord is better then a MAC.

  • and with Compiz Fuziona and Ubuntu, you can't fault it :p

  • Thank you for proving to me that my old computer can run Compiz Fusion well.

  • when i would donwload ubuntu on my memory card..

would it still works on my eee pc ive the memory card is removed??

  • You could use a USB memory stick if the boot CD was installed on to it. Google it, there's a lot of good info on it.

  • Yup. It's so easy the retarded police man could do it. Its um... actually a lot less painful than installing Windows. Its not that it's difficult installing Windows - its that it takes a long time screwing around installing things. Ubuntu is pretty much automated, and smarter all-round.

  • could i install ubuntu on my eee pc by just connecting a cd drive and put in hte ubuntu disk and boot it and install it? would it be that easy?

  • yeh it is be really easy, just set up ur eee in the bios to boot from cd-rom in the bios. and then follow the onscreen instructions when its loaded the installer from the disc.

  • ok, thank you very much

  • yes, you ether have to install it via USB cd drive. Via usb memory stick or SD card/ or a network installation.

  • Everything works find except the wifi or ethernet. Can you please tell me the easiest way to fix this?

  • I honestly don't know, because I never had any problem with setting it up. Go on the Ubuntu forms and tell them your problem, they can help you better then I can.

  • oh ok

    thanks

  • great! can i use that with 512mb RAM???

  • Impressive. Now let's see it with a few applications running lol =oP

  • Does the built in Wifi still work with ubuntu or do you have to install a driver?

  • wow i never thought eee pc could handle 3d... Nice show ;)

  • haha compiz is so efficient

  • you should always have it. it should be when your right click it if not then you can just do a google search and search for UBUNTU WALLPAPER. Your welcome (this is for kirchmaster)

  • i cannot find that damn wallpaper for my ubuntu someone plz send me link (i have ubuntu 8.04)

    send me message w/ link

  • lol if you really can´t find this? you can find your email account?...

  • no i had to install the gutsy wallpaper set in terminal lol

  • ive tried to install Ubuntu 7.10 several times but I only get as far as where is asks me for the language settings step. then the cdrom just skips around all day long. is there a way to install it with an external cdrom drive by usb?

It all works accoriding to plan but when the installation actually begins it just really bogs my computer down and the cd-rom just skips around. I know I have the iso burned right and it seems easy enough. but no luck. bout ready just to say the hell with Linux...

  • "is there a way to install it with an external cdrom drive by usb?"

Why? are you now using the internal optic dvd drive that the eee pc does not have?

  • I dont know what it is but I just installed 1 gig of RAM and gonna try it agian. maybe 256 was not enough?

  • the asus eee pc has 512 MB ram..

    and 256 is nothing.

  • Try downloading it again from the Ubuntu website but after you have chosen which version Ubuntu you want and which server to download it from tick the box that says "Check here if you need the alternate desktop CD" This is basically like the XP install you don't need a fast CD drive or much ram to install it this way.

  • You might want to try to create a new install disc. I had the same problem, and it turned out the disc was damaged.

  • yea I tried 3 times on new discs so Im done messing with it. Wasted many hours with no results. XP is fine I just though id try it out from all the talk about Linux. But enough is enough. I gave it more than a fair share of effort trust me.

  • google wubi

  • ive been told that when the new ubuntu goes into standby/powersave it totally buggers up SSD's because it read-writes at a stupid rate. Can someone please tell me this isnt true :(

  • a-fricking-mazing! my dual core 2gig-mem vista machine sure can't do tricks like that!!

  • Man! I have a 2G Surf and I still cant belive it!

  • ur's can do it too i have the 2gb and it can run on xp if u didn't know it's very easy to do i brought a extra 2gb sd cause im goin to use it for counter strike n other win programs

  • I love the sound of teabagging in the morning.

  • What's that sound?

Oh it's the sound of Ubuntu teabagging Vista.

    Carry on.

  • nice!

  • Hmmm... eres muy chistoso - que 'calidad' linux falta? Ahh y hablas sobre que distribución de linux exacto...?

  • out of the box? u can buy eeePC's with ubuntu linux with compiz fusion??

  • Presumably, the author means "out-of-the-box" as in post-install with no modification (Ubuntu 7.10 automatically enables Compiz when possible)

  • just a dumb question: from where did he boot up the ubuntu setup?^^

  • Probably an SD card.

  • external (USB) DVD player

  • I'm using ubuntu 7.10. Beryl doesnt work? You mean compiz? Well, i'm moving my desktop-cube thingie right now.

Wine doesnt work? Well, I was just playing World of Warcraft in it some minutes ago.

  • Dante1969 learn some english, I'm suprised you passed year 3.

"and noone who been able to do a COMPLETE Ubuntu" ??? wtf? I honestly can't even figure out what thats supposed to mean.

  • Ouch.

Speaking of English and figuring out things: aside of the typo WTF "I'm suprised you passed year 3" supposed to mean...?

  • Come on wtf is internet slang, it hardly needs to be capitalized, and "I'm suprised you passed year 3" obviously means Dante1969 has grammar skills less than what you would expect of a year 3 student.

Also I think you missed the words what and is: "aside of the typo WTF "I'm suprised you passed year 3" supposed to mean...?"

  • Damn you Mr Linux! Damn you to hell! Yeah I'd agree she's a time-consuming bitch to get running smoothly, but there's a feeling of satisfaction when you fix something. Linux is like the proverbial free car that you're going to do up one day.

  • can anyone tell me if you can use wireless broard band with this asus Eee PC as i have just bought one i know it has wifi but i like the freedom of wirless and i've had a look and it comes up with Mac and Windows XP and VISTA but does not say anything about linux and i dont whant to change operating systems

  • Most routers do not claim Linux compatibility, but actually work just fine.

  • cheers, thank you!

still waiting on my Eee pc but when it arrives i will go wireless thanks again you've been a big help.

  • what you can use beryl on a eee?

  • compiz-fusion

  • Sweet!

  • how u get ubuntu on the eee pc without a cd-drive?

  • download it.

  • It is now easy to boot a OS from usb key or any removal device.

Just download it, place it on your external device, set your set-up bootable from this advice, install ... and enjoy the fun, crazy and often professionnal music creation on Linux ;-)

  • like wat programs do u use for "professionnal music creation"

  • ARDOUR ;-)

This professional soft has the reputation to be as complete and powerful as Pro Tools systems ... an avalanche of tools to produce professional files.

With the LADSPA plug-ins (Soft synths or effects), the sound is really breath-taking !

  • can u make like beats and stuff?

  • The soft "Hydrogen" is included which is an intuitive rythm box !

Please, download Ubuntu Studio and try all his softwares.

After 4 or 5 days of adaptation (it does not work completely like Windows and Mac) you will be ready to launch a worldwide hit ;-)

  • lol, Ill try again 2 install Ubuntu, im running Xp cuz had sum issues and i couldn't install ubuntu

  • Go on the forums for some help ... too long for me to help you ... good luck !

  • thanks meing, I appreciate it!

  • Go on the forums for some help ... too long for me to help you ... good luck !

  • We'd be glad to help you with any spelling issues.

  • nah, im gud

  • chicka, chicka boom boom,

    chicka, chicka boom boom,

    chicka, chicka boom boom,

    ribbet

    chicka, chicka boom boom,

    chicka, chicka boom boom,

    chicka, chicka boom boom...........

(My crap impression of a real percussion drum kit)

  • what is this computer specs?

  • Hi everybody,

    I have a band (5 musicians)

I would like to install Ubuntu Studio on the new ASUS eeePC900 that will soon be released.

My goal is to record 10 audio tracks simultaneously and a virtual soft synth with an USB2 Audio interface (like Edirol or EMU,...)

I used to do that with an old Dell Inspiron 8100 from 2002 (Pentium 3, 850Mhz, 512 Mo Ram, 40 Go HD, ...)

So i think it will be easily possible...

If not i won't buy this marvelous small computer !

Does anyone has an idea ?

    Thx

  • I think the only real problem would be with monitoring the sound. You can elimate this by using direct monitoring from your Audio Interface, such as an Edirol UA-25.

If it ran on a lower spec PC you would probably be able to do it on this little thing.

  • I used to work for Roland so i can confirm that it will not be possible to monitor the sound without external dedicated interface.

I just wondered about the global performances of the ASUS eeePC, especially with the SDHC technology has SD cards has far lower bandwidth than hard disks.

  • Well if you are using a direct monitor, you shouldn't have any problems. this is provided you aren't doing mastering or post processing on any of the tracks from the eee.

  • Thanks for your answer.

My worry is especially for the Virtual drums i would like to use, probably only the snare sound as the global virtual kits are really CPU eaters.

I guess it will be OK for the CPU and memory time access but not memory bandwidth (SD technology only 5MB/s vs 30MB/s for hard disks)

    Ciao

  • yeah, wouldn't recommend any sort of drum/midi programming, only recording. But give it a go.

  • I couldn't get Compiz to work on Gutsy - I think it's because I'm using a HP laptop, and Gutsy has issues with those...

Gutsy must be the buggiest version yet, but I'll bet it'll be very much improved by the time Hardy Herron comes out.

  • oooh! Me Like :]

    Jam :)

  • I love the visual effect on ebuntu

    But that's usefulness

  • n00b

  • Totally agree with you.

What a waste of efficience when working.

People cannot imagine the power they will benefit to use strong apps ... without compiz !

Just use the virtual Desktops or the "alt-tab" key to switch between apps ... it will do the same !

  • Wow I didn't think Ubuntu would run so well with the that degree of graphics-ness...nice one, I'm getting one in a few months.

Can you specify which one this is? 2Gb, 4Gb, 8Gb?

  • you can run compiz fusion at least 64 mb of video and 128 mb of ram

  • this kind of projects of low cost Laptops are good things, because some people wants a laptop for some reason, you know students and people who travel all day, and they doenst have the money to buy a normal good one.

And some of us may think about price-quality, but the specs of this laptop is not like other ones like the OLPC....ITS really have good things by his price.!!!

I WANT ONE, where i can buy one, because i dont know if in the caribbean seas somebody sells it.

  • cool thing not ubutu the laptop

  • it is still expensive, consider the hardware it has...the screen is still ridiculously small.

  • Dude! YOU CAN PLAY FAR CRY AND HALF LIFE 2 ON IT:O

  • In a laptop its not the power but the size that matters :P And the battery lasts up to 4 hours...

It runs Photoshop CS2, warcraft 3 perfectly..

If i add RAM and plug my monitor and tablet in, i could use it as a serious Graphics design workstation :P

    It just works :D

  • that is kl.....didnt think the eee was goin to be able to run compiz properly but im glad it does :)

ow yea not that i want it but is it true they are bring out the eee with xp on it?

  • Yea but it might have some difficulties to run

  • Man why......why do they hav to do that THAT SUCKS i hope it fails!

  • can you make a video showing how to instal the software on the asus I dont want to fuck mine up

  • Does this come with Open Office or any other similar programs?

  • It comes with Xandra-Linus and many programs installed, for instance Open Office.

  • There's a video here on youtube showing the eee playing HalfLife 2 quite nicely, thank you very much! :) I'm getting one of these babies!

  • REALLY FAST!

  • lol. would ubuntu play games if i had it on my xps M1710 and not an EEE?

  • Holy Cow I was already sold on the Eee PC but knowing I don't need a ATI or Nvidia graphics for Compiz as I previously thought I did. WOW

    I am impressed.

I am thinking of getting the 1 gig memory version.

  • Well, if you run an i915 at around 800x600 you get about 140 fps anyways. Using the same card at 1280x800 only gives you 50 fps max

  • 50 fps still is really good.

    tv only comes at 30fps

I think that out performs my

    Mobility Radeon 9600 M10

    at 1024x768

  • Not without a lot of tweaking, and sometimes not even then. Not sure specifically if those work in Wine or whatever.

  • been sitting on the fence a LONG time for something portable. I want to carry this thing around the house, sit on the couch and VNC into my bigger desktop.

  • i too have been waiting a long time. mainly for the 8 inch or 8.9 inch screen because i dont want people to laugh at me when im at school with my little 7 incher with the big black border :) I think a little bigger would be a lot better.

  • laugh, lol. i bring it to school and everyone thinks its so cool cause its so small, they think its like $2000 or something.

  • I have a question. When you install Ubuntu onto an external hard drive with all the ubuntu system and everything, can u boot the computer up from the harddrive without instaling it onto the pc itself but instead onto the hard drive?

  • I did that once, It worked for me. your computer need to be able to boot from a usb drive (or however your external drive is connected). you'll probably find that you like Ubuntu more than everything else you use. I switched 2 months ago and I LOVE it.

  • yes

  • WOW.. now heres a test, run some programs .. try open office and rotate cube :-p

  • so in ubuntu 7.10 the built in compiz-fusion works right away with the Intel uma graphics? No retricted drivers or anything?

  • I have an intel gma 900 (same as in the Eee) and in Ubuntu 7.10 it runs fine with the default drivers.

  • man, 2008 will so be the year of the linux laptop

  • amen to that

  • say bye bye to pricey os cd's!

  • Well, Windows is so bloated it barely fits on a DVD now :D

  • I found the best way to install Ubuntu is to get a USB pen drive. There's a special installer that lets you drop the ISO on the drive and boot tha, since dumping all the files out of an ISO to a pen drive doesn't really work.

  • thanks, that's awesome. May I ask what installer you use to drop the iso on the usb drive?

  • simply get syslinux on your usb pen drive adn then extract all contents from the ubuntu iso to the root of the usb pen drive.then you will create a text file called "syslinux.cfg" and you put in the config from the grub bootloader into this cfg file. ;-)

  • Thanks so much, greatly appreciated

  • so, how does it perform when actually doing something useful? what does output from bonnie++ look like? or "ls -alR /"? thanks

  • hay, does it run ubuntu 7.10 out of the box?

  • No, unfortunately.

  • What do i need to install before i can install ubuntu?

  • is it hard to install Ubuntu on ASUS?

  • what do i need to download before ubuntu

  • a cd burning program and a blank cd

  • /bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off

    Help.............

  • im not a computer expert, but how easy was it to install compiz fusion?? iv been looking at compiz fusion site (beryl and compuz fusion merged) and the instructions to install to ubuntu seem pretty hard:(

  • this is the computer i bought my daughter i didn't know you could install ubuntu on it, and not have issues with wifi. I figured the linux distro installed on the eepc was the best one for it. How does it work? How much more space does ubuntu take than the os that comes with eepc? Even though it's a solid-state hdd it's not the biggest.

  • I need help! Is it possible to dual boot with ubuntu and xandros if I install another SSD?

  • This is Ubuntu Linux 7.10 with 3D Desktop (Compiz-fusion) on an Asustek EEE PC.

What did you think it was?

  • You're looking at a slice of awesomeness pie.

  • More desktop space....duh. Believe me, this runs great with multitasking.

  • But isn't this designed for an older computer? They aren't built for much multitasking. My standard computer is just fine at doing plenty of things at once.

  • No! Ubuntu isn't designed for old computers. Do you think Mac OS X is designed for older computers because they both share the same requirements (probably because Mac OS X is a clone).

  • "...probably because Mac OS X is a clone..."

Are you saying OSX is a clone of Ubuntu? I've been using Linux since 1996. I've used and watch Ubuntu grow. I also use OSX and seen changes in Gnome's window manager copying OSX. Now if only OSX did copy some of Gnomes features that would be great. Remember, Gnome (or KDE) is the GUI your using, not Ubuntu.

  • You get the idea... Mac OS X DOES use FreeBSD tech.

  • Correct, but FreeBSD has nothing to do with the GUI.

  • Or XFCE, anywho windows macintosh and linux will always copy eachother. Lok at the Human theme and Vista Basic, scaringly similar, and OSX's spaces, really much like Ubuntu Desktops.

Theres no getting rid of, and the more they compy the easier the systems will be for new users, right?

  • "But isn't this designed for an older computer?"

Sort of, GNU/Linux runs everything from the fastest super computers, to the tiny router you're using to post inane drivel on the Interwebs. And everything in between (including YouTube).

GNU/Linux is not designed for any specific purpose, but can be compiled for any specialised or general task. This is why there are many different 'distributions' for every purpose. The distribution (or distro) in this video is Ubuntu, an easy to use distro.

  • Because those are 6 DIFFERENT desktops. May be you should read up on these things before you post again!

  • If you don't know what you're looking at, the safest option might be to shut up, in order to avoid looking like a total cockwad.

    Oh well, too late.

The default is two workspaces under Ubuntu, the author must have increased it. As you are a Windows user, you'll have zero concept of the productivity advantages of the Ubuntu desktop. You might want to try it out.

  • hey thanks for your completely informative, calm and pleasant reply. you are a gentleman among asses heheh. thanks man.

  • hi does eee come with a cd rom drive ?

  • no they don't. you can however use external drives. its this way for portability =D.

  • MoonOvice I had similar problems and it was because of faulty RAM.

  • says you. Have you ever tried any distro of Linux? Ubuntu with compiz runs faster, is more stable and looks better than Vista and its free as opposed to the $500 price tag for Vista Ultimate.

  • That is true, however it sadly won't run your Windows software or games with very few exceptions (via wine) and there are so many programs that don't have an native Linux alternative.

  • it is unfortunate that there is such a lack of corporate support for Linux based OS's. With the support of big companies like Adobe or EA or ID. However most of the software that you cant run on Linux does have some freeware alternative. Most graphics programs, video programs, audio production programs have free alternates.

  • I guess now Linux gonna get to more average computer users with this new pc. less than 400$, sweet deal! :)

  • Is Ubuntu a good choice for older computers? I'm talking about 256 MB of ram. I won't be using Beryl or any crap like that, just basic Ubuntu 7

  • Xubuntu is better for low end computers.. it is at least better than windows 98/ME/2000. If you ask me it is even better than windows xp/vista

If you cant run windows xp/vista then ubuntu or xubuntu is the way to go.

There is no support for windows 98/ME/2000 now...they dont make it..

  • I have Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy running on and old PC with 256 RAM. And it goes faster than Win*. Also and old Ubuntu version should work better.

  • my computer runs ubuntu 7.10 beautifully even with compiz-fusion, Kiba-dock, and VirtualBox with XP MCE running fullscreen at 1280x1024.

  • You may want to try Xubuntu instead, it uses a lighter graphical interface and is a little easier on system resources. Both should run fine, though.

  • ...(cont'd from las paragraph) my system is AMD Athlon64 3500+ 2.4Ghz, 512 ram and Nvidia 6150LE...would anybody know what the issue is? I haven't tried any Ubuntu discs since around early this year and I want to try again but I don't want to make any coasters...
