career .307 hitter, Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio were the only other career Yankees to have their numbers retired to hit .300 or better in their careers.
Mattingly wanted to manage the Yankees, but they hired Joe Girardi instead. So, Donnie Baseball went to coach in L.A., and is now managing them.
If you want to get mad, get mad at the Yankees for not hiring Don Mattingly to be the manager.
He deserves to have his number retired, and I forgot to mention he has the highest fielding percentage of all time (.996), hit over .400 in his only 5 playoff games including 10 hits and 6 RBI's. Not to mention, he would give 110% every game, even if he was injured. He is one of those players that would give his heart and soul on the field.
I'm watching these terrible "high"-lights of that 1995 Game 5 A.L. Division Series on MLB Network right now...
O.k., you're positive the Metropolitans were still on Channel 9 in 1998? For some reason or another I remember seeing their games on Channel 11 that season. But I suppose they still were on Channel 9 for one more season. Not that anyone (other than Kev James and the rest of their fans) really noticed. Lol...
The 1995 ALDS was against Seattle, right? I remember the series against Seattle. The Yanks lost to them that year & Tino Martinez was on Seattle. Then the next year, we beat Seattle when Tino was on our team. I miss that guy & many others on the team back then (like Brosius, O'Neill, Williams, etc). Even though I'm a Mets fan, I love the Yanks as long as they don't play each other. But I'm fed up with the Mets' management & owners.
@wtcvidman--Yup. The Metropolitans did in fact air on Channel 9 for one more season in 1998. I looked it up.
And, yes, the Bombers played--then lost--to the Mariners in that epic '95 A.L. Division Series. It's still difficult for me to watch those clips even 16 years later in 2011. (I originally watched that game--and the entire series--on ABC by way of The Baseball Network. Which was obviously very short-lived.) Awesome series, though. The great Yankee dynasty would start one year later...
...And the Metropolitans will not be good for a lil' while longer. :-) Sooner than later let's hope. I'd really like to see a Subway Series/World Series rematch. I got the Bombers taking it again, too!
I was only 9 in 1995. Seeing the Yankees lose to Seattle that year, broke my heart. It was also the last time that Don Mattingly, my favorite baseball player, would play another MLB game. It is still hard for me to see it as well.
@BrooklynEagle The only time the Mets played on WPIX/WB 11 in 1997 and 98, was during interleague play. Yankees: WPIX 11 (1951-1998) YES (2002-present) My9 (2005-present) SportsChannel (1985-1988) MSG (1989-2001) Fox5 (1999-2001) CBS2 (2002-2004) Mets: WWOR-TV 9(1962-1998) SNY (2006-present) WPIX 11 (1999-present) SportsChannel (1982-1996) Fox Sports Net (1997-2005) MSG (2002-2005).
@carlinrulez666--Yeah, that all sounds about right. It's just a trip how the Yanks are on Channel 9 today and the Metropolitans are on Channel 11. That still trips me out sometimes. Lol...
@BrooklynEagle I know this was from 8 months ago, but to answer your question......Yes the Mets did air a handful of their games on Channel 9 in 1998 (by that time though, the VAST majority of them were on Sportschannel/Fox Sports Net)......1998 was the last season the Mets ever aired games on channel 9, by 1999 they aired most weekend games on WPIX Channel 11
So, the Yanks were off of Channel 11 by '98. Thought so. And they went to FOX 5 during the '98 season? That means Yankee games were on both MSG & FOX 5 in 1998, correct? I think it was. I really wish I could remember, but I can't anymore. Lol! I really thought their games only aired on MSG back in '98... And as for the Yankee/FOX 5 partnership, only big game I really remember on there is David Cone's 1999 perfect game. That game was on FOX 5 back in the summer of '99.
@carlinrulez666--Alright, thanks for the clear-up. I guess that's means the Yanks were on MSG & Channel 11 in 1998 (with the Metropolitans on Channel 11 by '98 as well). I know they were on FOX 5 by '99.
No. WWOR-TV started broadcasting Yankee games on "free TV", in 2005. WCBS 2 was still calling Yankee games in 2004. The YES Network has been producing the games on "free TV", since 2002.
Well, I'm a fan of both but of course like the Mets more, though I'll be the first to admit they currently suck. They switched the Yanks & the Mets. I remember the Yanks used to be on 11 (WPIX) while the Mets were on 9 (WWOR). Then the Mets got 11 (& have been on it to this day) while the Yanks got 9. Then came the YES network & they showed most of the Yanks games, though 9 still showed them about twice a week as of last season.
Well channel 5 is still Fox 5, I liked channel 11 when it was just known as WPIX. I loved the Shocktober movies they showed. They would be on this month if the channel would have kept Shocktober going.
@retroguy1976--hey, let me ask you something...when did the Yanks leave Channel 11 for good? It was after the '97 season, right? 'Cause I know the Metropolitans were on Channel 11 by the '98 season. Inbetween the '97 & the 1999 season (when they went to Channel 5--FOX 5), I think the Yanks only came on MSG...am I right or am I WAY fucking off? 'Cause I really cannot remember now in 2011. Almost seems like ages ago now! Lol!
Thanks for posting this. Brings back old memories, when I was a 9 year old Yankee fan back when it was on WPIX, and the late Bobby Murcer and Phil Rizzuto were calling the games.

@carlinrulez666 I hate don mattingly
They retired his number for no damn reason
He has no awards
No rings 1 playoff appearence
And he's a manager of the dodgers
What a traitor
Can't he be apart of the Yankees orginization?
Arod deserves his number retired more than mattingly
Better popularity , two AL MVP 's and a freaking ring
They should have gave his number a longtime ago

Retired Mattingly's number for no damn reason?
9x Gold Glove Award winner
6x All-Star
1984 A.L. Batting Champion
1985 M.V.P.
Homered in 7 straight games (1987)

A-Rod won't get his # retired for using PEDs.
