Hi, again, I responded 3 years ago, correction my grandfather was in the 100th Battalion...I received a message from someone that wanted to put my grandfathers name on the registry....however; I lost his e mail and name since I live on the mainland, California. I'd have to contact the family in Hawaii for his information. It was on the news yesterday...about honoring the 100th/442 Battalion. My grandfather, Walter C. Gora...
Pretty Cool Song and at this very moment, Im watching the movie "Go For Broke" on DVD, which is by the way, one of my favorite WWII Movies that depict the Brave Men and Women that fought against Facism.
Thank you for this song. My father and his brothers, Japanese Americans from St.Louis, Missouri, fought in Europe in WWII. My uncle, Chester Tanaka wrote the book, Go For Broke. Looking back on family gatherings, I don't recall them talking about the war. They were very quiet about it, as I think most of these Japanese American men were. Truly the Quiet "Giants", just doing their jobs.
My grandfather, Walter C. Gora, was in the 442 Battalion, His father was Japanese, his mother Hawaiian. He talked about the war however; I was small keiki (child)and too young to understand. In his later years, he moved back to Hawaii until he passed at 90 two years ago and we buried him at the VA Memorial in Kaneohe, Hawaii. My grandparents raised us Hanai in the mainland. We miss them...aloha ..
My father, Captain Martin J Higgins, was the Acting commander of the Lost Battalion. He was buried with military honors in Arlington National Cemetery, on 15 May 2007.
The only flowers we allowed to be placed on his grave were the crimson red Hawaiian Anthuriums sent by the 442 RCT veterans.
my father was a corporal in the 442nd RTC, we celebrated his 86th birthday in August. His older brother Jack was in the 100th Battlalion, past away a few years ago.
This is a great video of our warriors and should be shown in every school...I don't know who is singing but his voice is tremendous and perfect for this video.
My Grandpa was under 100 pounds and had flat feet but somehow he conned his way into the Army after Pearl Harbor. I always asked him to tell me stories as a kid. I wish he could have lived long enough to see me become a United States Marine.
My grandfather was in I Co, 442nd. He passed in 2003, but his legacy of honor, respect, and Americanism still reigns and will be passed to his great-grandson, who is also his namesake. Thank you!!!!!
Chicago native here- I am extremely proud of the bravery of the Nisei who served in the 442 for the freedom that we enjoy today the United States. Thank you Mr. Hakahashi for this uplifting tribute!
When i was small kid my grandpa use to take me to cafe 100 to eat and talk story with his friends the veterans of one puka puka and 442. To young to realize that i was in the presence of real heroes. Back then that was just my grandpa and men i called uncles. REAL HEROES.
It's a shame they had to suffer at the hands of bigots and ignorant people, but it's also a credit to them that they rose above it all and proved their racist detractors wrong, many times over! Hats off to them!
