Stop the ignorance . Dominicans have strong African heritage. It shows in our food, dance, music, and yes, in skin color and hair. However, we have other influences as well. If you go to DR, you can find a town full of black people then go to the next town and find that town to be full of white people with blue and green eyes( Bani). Is my aunt who is white with Green eyes less Dominican than I who am mulatto with curly hair and brown eyes? That is the diversity of my Dominican culture.

She is a LATINA. When you come from Latin America, you not only have African heritage, but many other that ppl have not clue about because many times, it does no show in your physical appearance. Just because your skin is dark does not mean that's ALL you are. Her hair has everything to do with her heritage, just as her skin color.

You act like black people in the United States are totally African. We aren't. As a matter of fact there was a scientific study where they performed a genetic test to see the ethnic background of blacks. They tested the DNA of about 10,000 black Americans and they didn't find a single person that was not mixed. Blacks being mixed race is not unique to Latin America.

Stop the ignorance . Dominicans have strong African heritage. It shows in our food, dance, music, and yes, in skin color and hair. However, we have other influences as well. If you go to DR, you can find a town full of black people then go to the next town and find that town to be full of white people with blue and green eyes( Bani). Is my aunt who is white with Green eyes less Dominican than I who am mulatto with curly hair and brown eyes? That is the diversity of my Dominican culture.

What's all the arguing for? Zoe was born in the United States and most people that look like her that are born in the U.S. consider themselves black. If she says that she is black, than that is what she is.PERIOD! Stop trying to redefine who she is just because she was some ancestry in a country that looks down on African heritage.That's why U.S. blacks are more successful than blacks from most other countries in the Diaspora. Her dad's puerto rican an her moms dominican. she said it on Ellen. Both dominicans an puerto ricans have african ancestors. jwynns im part dominican too. i recently lived there an went to PUCMM in Santo Domingo. There i took dom an carib culture an afri heritage w/ Blas Jimenez. yes DR has asians, indians ect. all of those influences but ppl for the most part (90%) are dark skinned w/ african ancestry. so i dnt kno who ur referring to when you speak about ignorance but it sure the hell isnt me.

However, just in my Dominican Family, we have all shades of the rainbow. From Blonde with green eyes to as Dark as they come. That is the Dominican culture, and it should not be limited to skin color. That's ignorant.

Its one thing to live the life but its another thing to learn about the culture, the diversity and the history behind it in its totallity.. DR has an interesting history filled with hate and despise for everything african... but in the recent history more dominicans are starting to starting to become more accepting of their african heritage and are recognizing themselves as afrodominicans.

She is a LATINA. When you come from Latin America, you not only have African heritage, but many other that ppl have not clue about because many times, it does no show in your physical appearance. Just because your skin is dark does not mean that's ALL you are. Her hair has everything to do with her heritage, just as her skin color.

You act like black people in the United States are totally African. We aren't. As a matter of fact there was a scientific study where they performed a genetic test to see the ethnic background of blacks. They tested the DNA of about 10,000 black Americans and they didn't find a single person that was not mixed. Blacks being mixed race is not unique to Latin America.

over 90% of Dominicans are decendents of Africans. The Tainos race was killed off by the Spanish and the only indians left were mutts.. the offsping of African and Tainos so those Dominicans who identify as indian, yellow, dark skinned indian, dirty indian or whatever you've been taught to say... There're a lot of beautiful Black women like Tyra Banks. But Zoe is Latin coming from a mix of racial backgrounds like every Dominican. I said this before but since it seemed to have missed youm, I'll say it again. Most black people in North America and the Carribbean are mixed. Racial purity is rare unless u are like 1st generation African. So yea technically she is mixed, but so is everyone else. She is mostly black like most of the black people...

I don't know why you use words like insulting. No one should get offended but learn from our different cultures and countries. I believe it's my duty to correct you with facts when you are clearly disinformed about the reality of my country. We're proud of all our heritage not only one side.
That means we are proud of our Tahino, African and European heritage if you want to see it in racial terms. But as any Dominican or Latin-American in general, we identify with our Latin culture.

no not b/c a person looks black. If the persons forefathers were black/African, then they are black. Zoe's a black woman....she is a decendent of black people from Africa just like every other black person. Being from a spanish speaking country does not change that fact. :-) also, the DR is in the carribbean, most people in the carribbean are of African descent.

I get you. i meant 1st and 2nd as a way of saying if your parents or grandparents were of another race or mixed, then I can get someone stating bi or multi racial, but generations after would be, in my opinion, out of context due simply to the fact that over 80% of AA fit that category and therefore alleviate the term black in relation AA altogether. (alot I know), but I get you and I def. feel you when you say Zoe is beautiful and talented no matter what. She is proud of who she is.

sorry commented below too, but my whole point is that unless by second or first generation of mixed race I see no point to state it due to the fact that dominican, jamaican, african american or whoever most likely has a mixed background. Even many asians have mixed heritage (ex. black) in their lineage. I know for a fact my family does, but I am black and my culture is a mix. Zoe's family is black and culture is afro latino. I don't know whats down her line, but from research this is truth.

well clearly everyone is mixed, so what is your point of stating you are unless by 1st or second generation. My thing is we are all come from an abundance of culture and history and race is very limiting to who we are as complex beings, but if your are going to state it in the terms of societal definition then use it correctly. my point is Zoe Saldana is black, but her culture is dominican. Black is a race, but African American is a culture. Sanaa Lathan is black but her culture is African amer.

Thank you! People don't understand that!!! If your skin is black...you are black. I think people don't want to be labeled that because especially in the united states, Black has become synonymous with African Americans who are descendants of Africans bought to the us for slavery and have had a bad reputation since then because of stereotypes. They feel if they're called black the you're saying they're like that. Black is black. A majority of Indians from India are black!
